Wednesday Squander Chance to Return to Top After Defeat at Forest Green
Sunday, 26th Mar 2023 15:07

Sheffield Wednesday squandered their chance to return to the top of League One after losing 1-0 to bottom club Forest Green Rovers at The Bolt New Lawn this afternoon.

Rovers, who previously hadn’t won for who haven’t won for 16 league games, losing 14, took the lead through Jordon Garrick in the 35th minute and had a number of chances to increase their advantage in the early stages of the second half before a determined rearguard effort prevented the Owls from ever seriously threatening to get back on terms.

The win, the first since Duncan Ferguson took over as head coach in January, sees the Gloucestershire club stay bottom but move 10 points away from safety.

Wednesday remain second, two points behind leaders Plymouth but now with only one game in hand on the Pilgrims.

The Owls, who had scored in every league game since December 17th before today, are three points in front of the Blues in third having played the same number of fixtures.

Darren Moore’s men are now without a win in three and have fallen to back-to-back defeats having been on a 23-match unbeaten run until Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat at Barnsley.

The Tykes are the next of Town’s fellow automatic promotion challengers in action when they travel to take on Exeter City on Tuesday with the Owls making the trip to Cheltenham on Wednesday.

OMG who saw this coming!!!

If ever games in hand mean sod all, this is it.

What price against Town and Barnsley going up and the current top 2 dropping out?

Ha ha ha ha. It's not easy to maintain form. Our last two games were really hard fought. We need to keep pushing and one or two results will help us out.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post praising Darren Moore & admitting I got it wrong in questioning his abilities, because of past 'underperformances' with strong West Brom & Doncaster sides that failed to get promoted.
Whatever we think of how they play, he has very much put a team together with players that get you out of this league, & they went on an incredible run, resiliently picking up wins. It seemed like DM had hit the nail on the head this year & they were unstoppable.
But, with both his previous sides, they came up short in the end, after looking good for promotion, and the fans placed the blame on him for poor decisions. Could the same be about to happen again now with Wednesday?
The Barnsley result was not one that should have shocked them much, given that they were away & Barnsley's form, but to follow it up with another loss, to a side that has been a guaranteed 3 points for weeks, has got to have a psychological effect on players, manager & fans. All of a sudden, it's going to get really tense at Hillsborough, & Darren Moore is going to have to stand tall to cope with the nerves & pressure - game on!

Wednesday failed to strengthen their squad in January, and are now paying the price. McKenna made four very good additions, and all four have now bedded in well.

Goal difference could yet be key in deciding who goes up automatically.

Ifs, buts and maybes. Pointless trying to predict the unpredictable. 2 defeats on the bounce for SW after 23 unbeaten. Plymouth away record not good. Town top of the form table. All looks good but anything can, and probably will happen! When it's tight at the top with a few games left the rest of the season goes out of the window!

Unfortunately the Bristol rovers one is at home, think they drew 2 all away. Rovers form has dipped.
Might be port vale away last game is second toughest.

Totally get that sometimes a team or two at the bottom all of a sudden show top 6 form and win games no one expects.

On paper, you wouldn't want Barnsley, derby and Peterborough away, all of which have plenty to play for. Plymouth are not facing that sort of quality but may be someone will pop up with an fgr type result.

This is huge. The top 3, assuming Ipswich and Sheff. Wed win their game in hand over Plymouth, will be separated by 3 points. Ipswich will still be third but just one slip up by the top two and we take their spot.

Just got to keep on winning, simple, just win every game for the rest of the season - we can do it!

We need to concentrate on our own results, anything else is just ifs and maybes. One game at a time and who knows where we'll end up. Fancy us against both Derby and Barnsley and still think that goal difference last game will be key.

Wish I'd had a bet on FGR ,would have got long odds on that scoreline.

It all shows how difficult it is to predict results at this stage of the season. One things for sure, whoever doesn't get automatic promo from the top four will have got a record number of points, probably over 90. All we can do is concentrate on maintaining our form through a very tricky list of fixtures, so if we are one of the unlucky two, we still go into the play offs with momentum. Our squad and cover should help with this. COYB
