Barnsley Game Postponed
Wednesday, 15th Mar 2023 19:03

Town have confirmed that the game against fourth-placed Barnsley at Oakwell scheduled for Saturday 25th March has been postponed due to international call-ups.

The move had been expected with Wales having named Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead in their squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Croatia and Latvia, Greg Leigh set to be in the Jamaica party for their CONCACAF Nations League game in Mexico on Monday 27th March and skipper Sam Morsy having been included in a provisional list of overseas players ahead of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi.

Although not indicating which of the latter pair has been called up, the Blues have now confirmed that the visit to the Tykes is off.

League One clubs are able to request the postponement of matches if they receive three international calls.

No new date has yet been confirmed but it’s expected to be rearranged for a Tuesday late in April, most likely the 25th.

Tickets purchased for the original date will remain valid, while supporters will otherwise be entitled to a refund.

Fans who have received their tickets can claim a refund by returning them to the ticket office or Planet Blue. Those yet to receive theirs can claim a refund via email.

Barnsley are currently six points behind the Blues but with two games in hand having won six and drawn one of their last seven.

A positive is that we could have the option of including John Jules in the squad by that time.

Hopefully having been selected for their countries will be a boost and promote even better performances. And gives Kieran more time to work with the team.
Must be gutting to have arranged an away weekend. Used to live in Suffolk but had to move away for work 20 years ago. Get to a few games a season and at this time of year always worry about the weather

for heaven's sake some of you. You're moaning about losing money on bookings and we're talking about a match that is critical to Town's promotion battle. AAARGH!!

ITFCSon - simple solution, international squads have to be announced earlier. Increase the size of the squad if needed, but if they're announced earlier then fans don't end up in a situation like this where a game is called off just 10 days before it's due to be played.

Or fans could avoid making non refundable financial commitments for games that might not happen. The Fifa international dates calendar has been known all season. How much notice do people need!

It's a nightmare decision,by players and club.bersant Celina rejected his international call up to help club, why can't burns and broadhead.?Ipswich has full momentum now, after beating Bolton away.Barnsley cancellation will make Plymouth extremely happy, and by the time we play in form Barnsley are momentum would have weakened. Its almost like management and players, don't really want promotion, crazy and ridiculous beyond believe.playoffs here we come!

Train ticket refunds are a rip-off. After deductions, you get back only a fraction of the cost. That's my experience, anyway.

Its probably the right call, but a great shame that momentum will be lost. By the time this game is re-scheduled Plymouth will hold a healthy lead over us (unless they drop some peculiar pts). Whilst the loss of a few players wouldn't have done us any favours, I can see the....'we were a bit rusty' or.... 'that's 5 games in 17days' excuses at the ready if the result isn't favorable. It is what it is. If we're as equipped as many believe...we'll cope. Superstition tells me that Morsy gets a red and Burns an OG when it's eventually played !

Afcfee I really do worry about some fans on here sometimes. So you'd rather go into what is a pivotal game without Burns, Morsy and Broadhead!?!? The latter two on great form with morsy our engine in the middle against a possible playoff rival in a game that could decide whether it's playoffs or top two?? 🙄

It's 100% the right call. We need our strongest team out there for this fixture. As for momentum etc we will just have to deal with it. Bottom line is, if we are good enough we'll go up, if we ain't we won't.
As for ifs, buts or maybes we'll never know, so don't waste your energies speculating!
Sympathy goes to the fans out of pocket, but least the game will be on ifollow!

Fans seem to think their own travel arrangements are more important than a crucial fixture with a depleted squad? Sorry Ive no time for this.
Promotion is everything!

BeattiesBackPocket we finnaly closed the gap to 2 point yes I would rather go without them than leave it till the 2nd or 3rd last game of the season when could already be out of touch, especially our record after international break thats ridiculous we could give up a 5 points on plymouth. we dont have many players out atm we could end up with big injury list by then and the squad could actually be weaker. Hopefully we are playing this game to try get top2 not a nothing game before play offs from gifting plymouth monmentum

Those with non-refundable train tickets and accommodation should all go anyway and meet up somewhere up north to watch the Wales game together and support our Town players.

or imagine burns and broadhead get injured for wales (heaven forbid) would we now forfeit the rest of the season? What a msg to the rest of squad we cant play without them 2

It must be like Christmas day on here for the moaners. Had nothing to complain about for 5 games, then this comes along wahey!
I seriously despair of some of our supporters.
1. Strongest side at all times
2. lost travel/hotel money, sorry but move on, book flexible.
3. "what if Burns/Morsey/Broadhead get injured?" Better stop training as well then, can get injured there too.
4. With the later fixture, that could be a winner takes all fixture by then - LOVE IT!

Come April 25th Barnsley could be unable to catch us. Plymouth having lost their last two away games conceding 8 goals may also be behind us by then. Let's just wait and see what happens between now and then. Another consideration is that a booking on Saturday could cost us Sam Morsy and then we'll be glad the Barnsley game isn't next. I'm not saying this postponement is good but it could turn out to be.

By end of April this May no longer be a six pointer (which it really is now) I've we had played them on 25 March and lost then momentum all with them. Hopefully by end April we have put some space between as they lose points on their games in hand, giving us the momentum! Think that makes sense!

Town , historically have rarely “ turned up” to the next league fixture after an international break, because we don't cope very well with interruption to our momentum.

We shall see in a couple of weeks time if that trait still haunts us won't we. IF we slip up post IB , that'll probably hand Plymouth second spot on a plate.

This is obviously the right decision and it would have been almost arrogant and a little cocky to take them on without 3 of our best players.I dont know school dates but if could be arranged in half term week would at least give the young uns a chance of going.

Orraman added 11:14 - Mar 16
I agree with those mentioning our poor response to international breaks - but that was then. This is now and I'm sure that Kieran's meticulous attention to detail and tactics will ensure that we resume fully prepared and raring to go

Has no-one else noticed that Plymouth also have their game postponed? After Saturday they have a rearranged game at Accrington on Tuesday (without that awful goalkeeper as he was sent off AGAIN on Tuesday night), then two weekends without league action as they've got the Pizza Cup nonsense when we're up at Derby. I don't think they're going to be particularly pleased about it really - in fact I daresay after Saturday they were hoping we would be facing the same problems they did last weekend.

As far as I can see it's a good decision as it means a) we don't play Barnsley while they're bang in form with several key players missing (particularly if Morsy does get called up!) and b) we don't have Plymouth holding a game in hand on us all the way to 25th April when they have rescheduled the game against Bristol Rovers.

Yes, it's annoying for the fans who've booked things, but as has been said on here we've known all season it was an international weekend and this was a possibility...

BeattiesBackPocket added 13:20 - Mar 16
Afcfee whether they get injured has absolutely nothing to do with your original point about this game being postponed as they could get injured for us before that much in training or the other games without call ups? So pointless comment.

The point is we go in without our captain and probably best centre midfielder in the league, broadhead who's in a rich vein of form and scoring and creating goals, and Burns then what we potentially lose they'll all momentum has shifted to Barnsley? None of this is ideal but EVERYONE on here has bemoaned not playing our strongest side and swapping too many players in games now you want to chop and change those players 🙄 you couldn't write it on here sometimes

When selling tickets should the club put * game subject to international call ups.

Also - Is it likely that a few our games in April may be 'Sky'd' **?

**Sky'd
To Sky- Verb a term given to an action where you do not give a flying toss about how late your actions are, the impact to fans or the cost - you are going to do it anyway.
