Skipper Morsy Issues Apology
Wednesday, 15th Feb 2023 12:17

Skipper Sam Morsy has issued an apology following his exchange with a fan following last night’s disappointing 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers.

Morsy was filmed arguing with a supporter at the front of the away section following the Blues’ third successive draw, which saw them drop to fourth in the League One table.

Writing on Twitter this morning, the 31-year-old said: “I’d like to apologise for my actions after yesterday’s match.

“I was emotional and I completely understand the fans’ frustrations, we will give all we have to turn it around.

“I can’t explain how proud I am to lead this iconic football club. Every week you turn up i your numbers, pay your hard-earned cash to follow us home and away, and there’s not a second that I don’t appreciate that. See you on Saturday.”

Any chance the Town fan is going to offer up a public apology for his part in the spat?

As an ambassador and captain of the team, he needs to rise above such appalling behaviour from a minority of fans then he wouldn't ‘be forced to' issue an apology.

I think the main problem was that the fan was at the side of the pitch, where Sideways Sam had been passing and running all evening. If the fan had been behind the goal they would never have met.

Whilst, I detest the toxic atmosphere that was prevalent towards the end of the McCarthy years, there will always be some who cannot handle their measures of disappointment without expressing that in some form. We are one of the best supported community clubs in the country and we have a fantastic reputation as being fair minded and patient.

However, this does not earn the club or players the right not to expect criticism and some wayward words from time to time should be seen as understandable however, misplaced that may seem to some.

Kieron has had our wholehearted support now for some 13+ months and reinvigorated the club and laid good foundations to take us forward. Let's be fair here Ipswich Town has nearly always given its manager's a fair crack of the whip within the limits it has had to operate within. Sometimes those limits have perhaps dictated that we have had to be more sympathetic with the managers cause than at other times.

I think it is right that people point out that this is not a good parallel with the Bobby Robson days when we were really the poor relations of the old top flight certainly during Bobby's earlier days, if not for most of his duration.

People wanted change, Gamechanger have delivered, they asked the fans to pack out Portman Road, the fans have delivered, the support away has been phenomenal. So we have to keep a few angry moments in perspective.

If we are honest we have all enjoyed a lot of what Kieron has been serving up until this recent dismal (by the standards that have been set) run. We have signed a lot of players since Gamechanger have come on board. By the law of averages some of these are not going to be successful or as successful as we would have hoped.

Whilst, we do not want to throw the baby out with the bath water, fans are more than entitled to ask some challenging questions of the manager and the team. We want to be a “big” name and with Gamechanger's support that's certainly how many teams see us now rather than an old has been clinging on to the past. This will create an obstacle for us. That's part of the territory.

Now on Saturday against Wednesday, the crowd started to turn at 0-2, justifiably as Wednesday appeared to have wanted it much more than we did in the first half, it seems that we are often emotionally neutral in our play when we try to play our steady precise possession based game. This may be a statement of McKenna's unflustered control style trying to avoid the team getting drawn into the red hot cauldron of events and losing its focus.

Clearly teams have worked out how to stop us to a point especially if we squander chances and we seem to need far more than anyone else to convert to a goal.

Last night was typical for me, a good first 5-10 minutes, a statement of intent that we were going to take control and impose our selves on the game early. Burgess had and let's be generous to him two half chances from corners. Unfortunately we struggle to convert a fair share of good chances, so a half chance that the likes of Plymouth or Wednesday seem to convert is something we seem incapable of doing.

The game deteriorated after it became obvious we were perhaps going to be less of a goal threat than some who hadn't been watching us of late may have envisaged.

It then took us into the 70th minute mark for us to up our tempo to show more urgency and for a spell we looked as if we might be rewarded.

I know most will not remember Paul Lambert very fondly, but rotation and excessively slow build up with no tempo gears was a big part of his downfall.

This will be a big challenge for Kieron, he shouldn't and won't change his football philosophy, possession based football will see us in good stead higher up the pyramid, and indeed at times it can work really well if we can convert more chances or press and take an early lead, but he does need to find an answer quickly to the Neanderthal style and tactics of the lower leagues, otherwise he could be under threat and with the pension fund investment it is difficult to know how long the patience threshold is other than probably much less so than any or the previous ownerships.

Interestingly enough the new manager of our neighbours up the road was lamenting about their style of possession football being to slow and not moving the ball fast enough!!!

I believe there needs to be some compromise, apart from disagreeing with a caller on radio suffolk who started complaining about some long balls, we have to have a mix and keep the opposition guessing and get the ball forward much earlier on many occasions. I feel our goalkeeper doesn't help here, plus our crossing into the box is genuinely awful, and when we do get a good testing cross there are not enough bodies attacking the ball in the box.

Good possession based football has its place as a base, we just need to be careful possession doesn't become obsession. There's a couple of rhymes in there somewhere!!!!

We have fantastic support home and away but there are a very small minority who get on the Beer and Colombian marching powder and think it's okay to give Dogs abuse to players Criticism is not helpful but we all criticise . This type of behaviour should be eradicated and the fans responsible banned.BTW I'm all for having a Beer on match day but not if it makes you mouthy and abusive

I'm as disappointed as everyone else, results in recent weeks obviously just not good enough.
But no player deserves to be verbally abused by any fans.
Sam Morsy has been far and away our most consistent performer this season and after what happened to him last night, I really hope the north stand show their appreciation by singing there's only ONE Sam Morsy !!

Always amuses me how footie fans think they can fire abuse at players & then moan when someone bites back. He has admitted he was wrong & apologised so let's move on & forget it. Get behind the team & show we have confidence in them.

Remember - these Guys are playing the way they have been instructed to play - the Buck stops with the Coach / Manager.
Some will be much less than happy with the current instructions / situation - you can Bet your bottom Dollar on that.
But ‘Stum' is the Word - obviously from Players for Contractual reasons.

The price of your ticket entitles you the watch, have opinions and be critical where justified. It does NOT give you the right to be abusive. If you can't handle the disappointment when a game doesn't go our way then stay at home! Toto Nsiala had a similar incident at the Valley last season I seem to remember. Get a grip whoever you are, learn to be a proper fan or stay away.

Morsy is one of the few players who cannot be criticised. He constantly tries to drag the team along with him, is committed in all areas on the pitch and beyond that is probably our most important player. As far as I'm concerned an apology was not needed in response to a bunch of ‘fans' who had clearly had too much to drink but shows the character of the man!

BossMan - if Morsy was my employee and I overheard a customer calling him a c***, that customer would be out on their arse, I wouldn't be asking him to apologise. Says more about him that he would stand his ground in front of a gang of baying hyenas.

I heard a lot abuse at the game - couldn't believe what was being shouted towards Cam Humphreys - the lad is 18! If anyone saw his face at the end of the game, he was close to tears. He ran his socks off for the cause, no faulting his passion and effort. Fans need to take a look at themselves. If you want to get promoted, cheering and encouraging the team in adversity is where we can help.
