Sheffield Wednesday Clash a Sell-Out
Thursday, 9th Feb 2023 19:25

Town’s third-v-first clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Saturday will be watched by a 29,000 sell-out crowd.

The Owls are bringing 2,100 supporters to Suffolk, the teams having drawn 2-2 at Hillsborough earlier in the season.

Town's have had one attendance in excess of 29,000 so far this season, 29,069 having watched the 1-1 draw with Plymouth last month.

The second-placed Pilgrims, who were beaten 1-0 away by Wednesday last weekend, are at home to Portsmouth on Saturday, while Derby in fourth are away against Wycombe Wanderers and Bolton, fifth, are at Peterborough.

So looking forward to this game. Should be a great atmosphere on Saturday afternoon.

Our home attendances this season have been remarkable considering we are in our fourth season in League One in what is our first spell in the third tier in most supporters' lifetimes and we haven't even been able to make the play-offs in this division, plus we have had very little to shout about for 15-20+ years.

I just so hope we are able to end this season with promotion.

The crowds are large, a nexus of exciting football, realistic expectation of winning and total love of The Town.

This match fills me with dread. I regret allowing myself to get carried away early on in the season, but it's clear to see our form is not a blip. The game should suit us as we have demonstrated we are better when playing more attacking sides, however a loss risks derailing not just the season but the identity the club has desperately trying to rediscover.

It is an extraordinary attendance again at Portman Road, as 29,673 will bear witness to it. I do think it is time for the club to consider expanding the stadium. We are big enough and bold enough to do it!

We had sell outs regular throughout our history especially pre Evans ownership!
If we make championship I predict a sellout of season tickets!
So looking forward to the game

To those criticising KmK and his "boring, tapping around in our own half" football.....nearly 30k people disagree!

For context guys, 1980/81 we had an average league attendance of 24,619. The year we won the league (61/62) it was 22,835.

I hope this puts into context the recovery curve this great Football Club is now on!

Sheff Wed have a big and noisy following, so we will need to do our bit to match that. Any other day, I'd say I quite like that team, but not Saturday. COYB!

this game could make or break the season so the team HAVE TO be 100% on song, We have the players capable but they must all ''turn up'' . A fantastic attendance hope the match lives up to the occasion. COYB

Whilst Sheffield may have two clubs it does have a population well over three times the size of Ipswich. To get the gates we are getting is incredible and has not gone unnoticed up the road in Budgie land.

….. meant to say that in my opinion, the Blue Action experiment in B block did not add to the volume of noise last time. Good to try it but would be better to have cohesion behind the BR stand.

Bazz8564. Good stats but the population of Ipswich and Suffolk was much smaller then. We really were a small market town when we won the league.

Bert - while that is true, Town are effectively a County club (like the budgies) so the population of Suffolk may be a better comparison. Compare that, say, to Burnley or Bolton.

We had the game won at Sheff. Wed. and let it slip, as on many other occasions this season. No repeat on Saturday, please.

BobbyBell, I agree, but equally the marketing reach of the bigger clubs wasn't as big as it is now, and we are two divisions lower, so we are still punching well above our weight when it comes to growth and regeneration.

Bet there's a lot of championship clubs with lower avarage crowds.

The attendances are incredible but we don't appear to have the personnel capable of coping with it. Until we get over the line against one of the league's big hitters we're going to be a... 'pleasing on the eye, nearly but not quite club'. This has all the makings of us being 2-1 up after 93mins, sitting deep and after 96mins having to settle for a point. With 16,000 in the ground we'd win 3-0. Fortunately at my age- even at Xmas I was predicting a 3rd place finish, so the dip in performances has come as no surprise to me.The way the pack are closing we may well be playing the home leg first. I'm gonna mark myself down for this negative post. Get a life Chepstowblue !
