McKenna Not Expecting Any Further Business
Monday, 23rd Jan 2023 15:04

Town boss Kieran McKenna isn’t expecting any further moves in or out of Portman Road during the final week of the transfer window.

The January window closes at 11pm a week tomorrow with the Blues having made four additions, the short-term signing of midfielder Massimo Luongo, the loan of striker George Hirst and the permanent recruitment of forward Nathan Broadhead and defender Harry Clarke.

Asked if he anticipated any more business in or out before next Tuesday, McKenna told iFollow Ipswich: “I don’t think so. As I’ve said all along, the club will continue to work very hard behind the scenes until the last day to look to improve the squad if they’re the right profiles for the short and long term or available.

“But my focus at the moment is on the games coming up, on the tasks ahead and we’re happy with what we have in the building and everyone’s really pushing forward now to get into the Morecambe game and get a good performance and a good result importantly and get momentum in the group.”

Let's hope something gets going soon before it's to late.

I'm a little surprised that nobody is being moved on or more loaned out !

Need to trim the squad , cant possibly keep all those players occupied , start with Jackson ??

Does nobody else remember him criticising the size of the squad that inherited from Cook saying it was impossible to keep everybody happy ? Wasn't if 7 fit senior players not in the match day squad on Saturday? Plus two injured. Penny gone but surely more must follow ? Why wouldn't he just simply say given the size of the squad we are more likely to see departures rather than arrivals ?

We've done very well with the four that have come in and that's enough.

As for departures, well I think KM has previously said he doesn't get involved in that until its done. But, (and this surprised me) If we assume that Ball & Camara are delisted because of injury and Cameron Humphreys is under the age limit so he's effectively a free addition, Ive worked out that with 6 backs, 8 in MF & WB including both Edwards and Jackson in that group, 5 tens including Broadhead (and assuming John-Jules can return this season) and 3 nines including Adhame, we have 22 outfield players which is our limit plus 3 keepers which is the 25.

The exit door therefore could stay shut until next season when Pan and Dom Ball would come back in, but if we assume Keough moves on to coach either Baggott or Ndaba fills that gap, we would only need to trim 2 off (hoping that Hirst has an option to stay) and assuming KM has bought players with what he sees as Championship pedigree. We might have seen the end of the merry-go-round for a bit... Or I could be overthinking it again :)

Really need a commanding centre half.

Although our recruitment has been okay i still think it could be a lot better . Not many have really got me excited. If we had of got it right first time i don't think we would have made so many new signings.

Bazza8564 don't see anyone else coming or going out but who knows what goes on behind the scenes, no one saw Broadhead coming in. It's not an ideal time to bring in a lot of players & expect a lot more movement in & out at the end of the season,
As for the ChrisR statement-to be expected, Jackson must now be one of the longer serving players & I think it makes alot of sense to keep him but of course our fickle fans seem to have to have a hate figure, mine have only been McCarthy & few of the players he brought in.

Caviar. Let's be honest shall we? Jackson been here 5 years and scored 20 goals in that time. And no I'm not one of those who has to have a hate figure, far from it. Have criticised fans on more than one occasion for doing so. But fact is, he's not good enough. Should have gone some time ago.

Cadiar, yes I agree totally. Its always frustrating to not know whats coming but the club do it well, leaks can cause other people to get alerted to our plans. It seems we wanted Morgan Whittaker and that leaked in November, so it makes sense to hold your cards tight.

On Jackson, I think the criticism goes beyond the balance of fairness personally. I like him as a player for his 100% commitment and his pace. Too often this season we've played his as a false nine to rotate Freddie, and I don't think he suits that because he isn't the natural finisher that a true 9 is. He strikes me as a "facing the goal" type now. But I believe we will see him much more now as a deputy for Wes, because he has the ability to to run at and past people and is a good crosser of the ball. Wes' workload is immense,we've spent the last 18 months with him as a key threat and having KJ as back up is excellent, more so than Kyle because he KJ is very right footed.

The business we have done is excellent. If we haven't enough in this squad then serious questions need asking of the players. McKenna and Ashton have done us proud with some seriously good additions. I am as mystified as many as to how our form could slip so badly. Decision making needs to improve both in defence and the forward line. We now have a very good chance to put things right as apart from Wednesday we have five bottom of the league clubs coming up. Fans need to show McKenna how much he means to us. We can't afford to lose him. Players also say he's great. They need to prove that too.

Good breakdown of the squad situation Bazza8654...

I think we'll only bring in someone new at this point if we pick up a long-term injury in the next few days (let's hoping that doesn't happen). Summer can see some movement of players out and Keough will likely coach.

A lot depends on whether we get promoted. Many players moved to the club with the expectation that we'd quickly be back in the Championship.

Think I may rock the boat with this one but this is my opinion -
I am sick of hearing how lucky we are to have McKenna( I swear to God the way some people go on about him feels like we've signed SBR as manager) truth is he is extremely LUCKY to come to a club like ours. It's his first job in management ffs and he's obviously achieved nothing yet, where else could he go and manage in front of over 25,000 fans most weeks with a board giving him the backing he's had.
@ OldFart - it's quite easy to see why we are in a bit of a rut now, teams have worked out how to play us ( Lincoln x2)as we seem to have no plan b and just seem to change personnel in games rather than formation TWO UP TOP FFS.
Having said that I am most certainly not against him and indeed glad he is our manager, but a little perspective is needed.
I'll tell everyone something too, if he doesn't get it right and get us promoted ( this or next season)the owners won't put up with it and he'll be out as they've already stated what they want and backed heavily, unfortunately it's a business not a sport.

I don't think he knows what he wants to be honest, or what he's doing.
Strange ideas, tactics, player selection certainly making a few scratch their Heads … !!

You do not need to have been an Employee of Man Utd to be a Celebrated Manager - many who have ‘sussed us out' - have not been.
It's not a prerequisite to Success, as we are currently seeing !!
We were TOP recently - now completely out of touch of that.
Just a Reminder, because that's well and truly gone for the season !

My concern is McK has a 'keep everyone happy' mentality and with this large squad of decent players there may be a lot of that going on until the end of the season. As I said the other day Arteta picked the same team for the last 4 Prem games and look where they are.

Not trying to be a Jackson basher like some will say, but some "interesting" but selective facts (not opinions) since arriving.
Make what you will from them, but I'm aware stats don't always tell a full story about a player.
Arrived Aug 2018 for £1+ million. Signed as a forward. Scored 3 (38 apps) in the league (+1 in cup) same as Jon Nolan (MF) and Will Keane (Loan, FW - half season).
By contrast, Gwion Edward (MF) and Freddie Sears (FW) scored 6 each.
Colin Quaner (Loan, FW - played half season) scored 4.
ITFC are relegated at the end of the season.
Jackson - 2019-20 L1 - Scores 8 league (+3 non). 2020-21 - Scores 1 in league. 2021-22 Scores 3 (+2), 2022-23 half season - scored 2 (+1).
Total 20 goals in 4.5 years in the league for 129 appearances / 24 all competitions for 150 appearances. Less than 1 goal per 6 games.
In contrast, L2 2017-18 for Accrington scored 16 in league in 46 apps. 1 in 3 games but at L2 level.
By contrast in a similar period, Cam Burgess (DF) has scored 9. Wes Burns (MF) has scored 17 for ITFC in less than half that time.

Appreciate these facts will be unpopular with some, interpreted many ways & argued they're selective and opinions will then be shared, but if anyone should be loaned out / sold it seems on facts, Jackson should be high on the list from cost vs returns.
