Swans Recall Whittaker From Plymouth
Tuesday, 3rd Jan 2023 18:46

Swansea have confirmed the recall of forward Morgan Whittaker from his loan at League One leaders Plymouth Argyle.

The move had been widely expected following Swans manager Russell Martin’s comments regarding on-loan Whittaker last night.
"
Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip told his club’s website: “We are obviously disappointed that Morgan’s loan has been cut short.

“He was enjoying his football tremendously and we felt we were providing the best possible environment for him to develop and contribute.

""“We did everything we could to retain Morgan for the duration of the loan as initially agreed, but it was not to be.

“Morgan loved his football here, which is a testament to [manager] Steven Schumacher and the club as a whole for our approach to player care and we hope he can continue to build on the promise he has shown here.

""“The recruitment department at the club plans for any eventuality and we are already well under way with our January operations, as is clear by the additions of Ben Waine and Saxon Earley.

""“Argyle is an exciting club to play for right now and a brilliant place for talented young players to come and improve, as Morgan has evidenced.

“We are confident that, thanks to the backing of the board, our additions in January will ensure that we are not knocked off course by the disappointing loss of Morgan.”

Whittaker appears unlikely to play for Swansea from Martin's comments yesterday when he said it was the club's owners who had instigated the recall with a permanent switch away from South Wales on the cards.

In November, TWTD revealed that the 21-year-old was among those on Town's list of potential January recruits. Whether the Blues' interest ultimately comes to fruition remains to be seen, while other clubs, including some in the Championship, are understood to be keen.

Elsewhere, it's expected that summer Town target George Hirst's loan from Leicester to Blackburn will be cut short in January with the Foxes then set to send the 23-year-old out elsewhere.

The striker has made only three starts and eight sub appearances for the Ewood Park club.

Yes, we're top scorers but the problem is we're still failing to convert chances into goals - and giving opponents few big chances but still conceding lots of silly goals (we must have one of the worst goals conceded vs xG in the division). As Sospiri says above, we need a natural goalscorer, a 'fox in the box' - someone who scores the type of goal that Colby Bishop did against us last week. Part of me wonders if just having a settled front-line might help - yes Ladapo may have 'played 29' for his 10 goals, but a third of those games were off the bench, so if you base it off minutes played he is averaging more than a goal every 2.5 games which is not a bad scoring record (better than Whittaker). We have little to no cover of course - JJ injured and Jackson not cutting it at this level.

Has any one else thought we have a recent history of doing business with Swansea.
They did well out of the Downs deal & may want to reciprocate

We are top scorers in the league, but not because we have got top goal scorers, it is due to the amount of possession we have in games & the number of chances we therefore get. Now in theory that sounds fine, but in reality it allows us to beat the sides that come to play football against us quite comfortably, but regularly see us struggle to find & take our opportunities against the well marshalled sides that set out to frustrate us.
Increasingly we are seeing opposition recognise the way to stop us, for whom we are too predictable, while dominant in possession. In such games, we need a finisher up front, someone whose conversion rate means he is a proper striker rather than just a hard worker who gets a fair share, or a speedster who stretches the defence with pace but ultimately needs 3 or 4 good chances to get 1 goal. In the tight games, you need someone creative to open the defence with a great through ball & an instinctive finisher who will most likely bury 1 of the perhaps the only 2 chances that comes his way.
We don't have that & it shows. That is why so many are getting frustrated & nervous when drawing matches we've had 70% possession in & are reading articles about fine margins & how we deserved more from all our good play. It is great that we are playing flowing football after years of drudgery, but it's still firstly about winning games when it comes to promotion.

No loyalty in football these days Chrisfelix, so doubt it.

If we don't attempt to sign whittaker then I believe it will be a massive missed opportunity! With our squad he would run riot

ITFC have stated in the past that we will only sign players who are desperate to come here. I for one am fully behind that idea. If Whittaker isn't keen then he won't be coming.

9 goals and 7 assists so far this season and still only 21.. I think he has a big future ahead of him and I hope we bring him in on a permanent deal.
