Valentine Signs First Pro Deal

Academy forward Nico Valentine has signed his first professional deal with the club, a three-year contract.

The 17-year-old, a second-year scholar, was among the scorers for the U18s in last night’s 9-0 FA Youth Cup first round victory over non-league Aveley at Portman Road.

The former Debenham High School pupil, who was called up to an England U17s training camp in the summer of 2021, has been at the club since the U8s.

“I believe that he signed a professional contract yesterday,” manager Kieran McKenna said. “That’s very good news. A talented young player.

“I’ve seen a little bit of him but he’s had some injury issues over the last few months, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of his development over the next months.”

McKenna was at the U18s victory over Aveley and says Youth Cup games are a good opportunity for the youngsters.

“It’s always nice. I’ve been involved in those type of games as a player originally and as a coach,” he said.

“They’re always nice occasions for the players to play at the stadium and in front of what was a nice crowd for that round and an occasion to enjoy and embrace as they did.

“Of course, we don’t make judgements off of how players do in one-off games, in Youth Cup games. It’s more about a longitudinal process and constant communication with the academy staff about the progress of our best young players and we continue to take that longer term look and try and plan the right steps at the right time with the staff in the academy.

“That’s the most important part of the process, but, of course, getting them out on Portman Road and getting to see them play and play so well is always a nice night for them to enjoy.”
