EFL Pay Tribute to Queen as Weekend Fixtures to Be Discussed
Thursday, 8th Sep 2022 19:29

The EFL has paid tribute to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died this afternoon aged 96, and say discussions will take place with the Government and other sporting authorities regarding the weekend fixtures.

In a statement, Rick Parry, chair of the EFL, said: “Today, the EFL was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II.

“Over a 70-year reign, Her Majesty proudly served the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with distinction.

“The Queen had a keen interest in sport including football. Her Majesty attended numerous FA Cup finals throughout her reign and was an advocate for our national sport through her many years of service.

“The Monarch was at Wembley Stadium in 1966 for perhaps our national game’s most famous moment to present captain Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet Trophy after England beat West Germany to win the World Cup.

“On behalf of the League and its clubs, we join the rest of the nation and people across the world in mourning the passing of our Queen, Elizabeth II.

“The thoughts of everybody at the EFL and our clubs are with the Royal Family at this sad time for our country.”

It’s expected that there will be a 10-day period of mourning with sporting fixtures likely to be postponed, although the EFL says not decision has yet been made.

The statement adds: “Consideration in respect of EFL fixtures will be discussed with the Government and the wider sport sector during the period ahead and an appropriate announcement will be made at the earliest opportunity.”

Town have also issued a statement: “Ipswich Town Football Club is truly saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts are with The Royal Family at this difficult time.”

Shalll we say 5 then?
Joyous, you are clearly upset, so am I , but no need to be rude.
I did go o a game 4 days after my Dad died, though I can understand not every one would.
I loved and respected him.

Life must go on. There are ways to show respect without shutting down for weeks. Personally knowing 2 people who have travelled from America for this weekends game and imagining everyone else with pre paid travel cancellation should not be an option.

Politics, the monarchy and sport do not mix and frankly the show must go on.

joyousblue I'm also very upset by the passing of Her Majesty. However, I'm at a loss to see what would be gained by postponing football matches at the weekend, thereby depriving countless individuals the opportunity to show their respect inside the stadia. My father sadly passed away five years ago and going to Portman Road was, at that time, the last thing on my mind. I will, by the way, be going to work tomorrow as usual.

They will be cancelled as we are forced t participate weather we want to or not…

Blue lodge blue maybe you should have some respect with your attitude towards other people!

A potential ten day mourning period where people will be losing a fortune on cancelled travel and accommodation maybe think about more than just you.

To put it bluntly it's sad but people die every day, frankly lives should not be dictated by an outdated monarchy of largely rich fools born into privilege

Funny how all those spouting respect are the same ones who are being rude, calling people morons and idiots….

Not everyone venerated the Queen, or the institution she was the head of... she was a very old lady and a public figure and she died and that's sad, but everyone is entitled to an opinion about how that should be marked, and there are plenty out there (myself included) who feel that the country doesn't need to shut down for 10 days because one posh old lady died.

Think the fixtures should go ahead and the West Ham fans have shown why.
An opportunity to say thank you to a wonderful lady all together

Not too many complaints from the nation when handed an extra bank holiday to celebrate HRH's platinum jubilee. How many felt "forced" to participate then? Personally don't feel strongly either way about whether fixtures go ahead. What I would say is she was a great sports fan and perhaps would have preferred not to "interfere"?

BlueRuin69 added 21:54 - Sep 8
Yeah we were forced to participate in the bank holiday, difference is l like bank holidays, your point is?

And to be fair, if someone told me I had to have tea with Liz Truss once a week I'd probably call it a day too

Such sad news indeed but even sadder is some people's attitudes. We now seem to live in a world where some people's immediate reaction is "why should it affect me and my life?" Has respect also died? Is it so hard these days to think about anyone but yourselves?

pg888 added 22:23 - Sep 8
Why should it affect me and my life? Answer is it shouldn't strangers who have done wonderful things for other people die every day and the earth is still turning
