Bonne's QPR Future in Question
Wednesday, 17th Aug 2022 15:19

Former Town loanee Macauley Bonne’s QPR future appears in question having been left out of their squad for last night’s 1-0 defeat to Blackpool with manager Mick Beale not ruling out his exit before the transfer window closes on September 1st.

Bonne, who spent last season with the Blues, his hometown club, scoring 12 times, had been a used sub in the West Londoners’ three previous Championship games and started their Carabao Cup tie against his former club Charlton.

Quizzed on why the striker was left out of the 18 last night, Rangers manager Beale said the former Colchester man has dropped below 19-year-old Sinclair Armstrong in the pecking order.

“Macauley was just not selected,” Beale told West London Sport. “I think the impact of Sinclair means when you’re looking at your bench, obviously you’re allowed seven and one’s a goalkeeper, maybe two to cover defensive positions, two for midfield and two up the park.

“I chose to go with young Sinclair over him. Macauley’s had a really good pre-season, we have a really good relationship, everything’s clear and out in the open with Macauley and where he stands in the squad.

“I just feel at the moment that Sinclair earnt the right and certainly with his impact at the weekend I thought it was the right decision and I think we saw that with his performance.”

Quizzed on the likelihood of Bonne, who has a year left on his contract, moving on before the transfer window closes, Beale added: “I think if the right offer comes along for any of our players in this window they could move. That’s the situation we’re in as a club.

“It comes down to whether Macauley is going to be happy. In a few weeks everybody is going to be fit, hopefully, and there’s going to be a lot of competition for places. I think in the next two weeks there might be one or two players knocking on the door.”

Town are on the lookout for another striker ahead of the deadline with Leicester’s George Hirst having been a target throughout the summer.

As reported yesterday, the Foxes are understood to have offered the former Sheffield Wednesday youngster a new contract with a view to sending him out on loan to the Championship.

We understand the Blues are still interested in signing Hirst on a permanent basis but with that deal now appearing less likely to go through have alternative options under consideration.

As TWTD reported last month, if the Blues are forced to look elsewhere for another striker then it isn’t impossible that Bonne could come into their thinking.

There is a lot of conjecture about this but we really don't know what is going on, other than he is clearly not in QPR's future.

If The manager thinks that he is right for the team and can do a job, then I am sure that MB would jump at the chance to come back home. It's a big ‘if' though.

We wait and see what happens, as the club this season have been quite good at keeping their targets close to the vest recently.

I love Bonnes passion and commitment but he's not a goalscorer and isn't technically good enough to play in a KMK team. He struggles to read the line and for me we need to look for a better option. Not good enough for QPR not good enough for us. We mustn't let sentiment take over. He did well here for a half a season but definitely not for me.

Saxonblue74. U say about the personal problems he had 2nd half of the season as the reason he stopped scoring. And yes, may have played a part. But he's done exactly the same as that, at every club he's played for. Starts well, fades away. Would support him to the full if he signed, but not for me.

I wouldn't be upset to see him come in but I'm not convinced he's the best option and pretty sure he's not the answer in the championship. QPR could have got their money back in January but I suspect he'd be a lot cheaper now. Given Hirst looks a long shot even for a loan it might be worth taking Bonne back on loan?

I would be surprised if we bought him now.

In the second half of last season he played under KMK and scored few goals. If KMK wanted him then we could have signed him back in July, but we didn't. That suggests to me that we don't want him and if QPR don't want him either then that is hardly a recommendation.

Karlosfandangel. U say we need a young striker capable of scoring goals in the championship, of scoring 20 -25 goals. And u name hirst as a likely fit. Well, he's young. So fits one of ur criteria.

To all those talking about a goal scoring CF, we have one and he's on loan at Portsmouth. What I would ask is if our MF and forwards take their chances and all hit double figures plus the defenders start making a contribution we don't need a 20 goal striker.
Personally I believe there is a place for Bonne in the squad if not as a starter certainly to run tired defenders around late in the game.
I love his love for the club and I would have him back in a heartbeat (if McK thinks it's the right thing to do)

Paul Mariner was one of the best in that position, yet in 1980/81, whilst Warky was breaking records Marrers scored 9 goals, 6 of which were in the UEFA Cup.Creating space for others to score!
Another Ladapo is what we need, and we need cover for him so our system works. Bonne cant do that role, his touch is poor, he cant hold the ball up and hes poor in the air. Oh, and he was almost always offside. I just dont get the obsession, he let us down last season and played crap under KM. I know hes a local boy but he isnt good enough for ITFC, he was an integral part of last seasons failure, please everybody move on

If he wants to come back let's test his appetite with a low risk contract until the end of the season.
Let's make him earn a longer deal.

what I mean is we need a player who is young and able to get 20-25 goals in the Championship, we need a Toney or Clarke Harris.

Hurst might be that type of player who could become a Toney or Clarke Harris

Perhaps we should do something totally out of the ordinary, look abroad 😉

I'll never understand how the player I watched score 12 and some pretty impressive goals in that number, then just stopped scoring completely. McKenna will have seen enough to decide if he thinks he can turn that talent into consistency. I'll trust his judgement but wish Bonne well whatever happens

On comparing performances I'd take Freddie every time over Bonne, two totally different types of player in my book. I don't think Freddie will ever be the prolific 20 goal a season player people want but I'd back him to get to 10 this season, what he does give us is the physicality of being able to take on defenders and harry them in the way I was hoping that Simpson was going to be. It's a shame that his attitude is to want away from the club and perhaps he has not got it in him to want to stay and fight for a place.
We are looking good with Freddie leading the line so I'm worried about him getting injured as Jackson is doesn't look the answer as a replacement

I did like the lad and he offered something early in his time with us, that if he could repeat would be a great a asset. However I have complete faith in MA & KM to seek out and attempt to purchase the right players for this squad going forward, as they have not got much wrong to date.

The club needs to move on. Bonne was the one piece of good news at the beginning of last season.
He got lucky & unfortunately then got found out. We already have one ( new) striker who can't convert his one on one's.

Bazza8564. Ur point is right. However, Mariner scored 13 in 1980/81. Just looked as I actually thought he'd scored more than that. But yer, agree we don't necessarily need a 20 goal striker. Even if there are actually any about anyway.

Karlosfandangel. Absolutely a striker who could score 20 goals plus in the championship would be great. But you then mention Clarke Harris, who only managed 12 goals in the championship last season?

Regardless of what anyone thinks, McKenna isn't interested.

perhaps we have been waiting for QPr to lower their demands all along and the Hirst saga is nothing but a smokescreen.

whatever the outcome Ashton won't pay over the odds as he has to justify himself to the Yanks. Any deal may depend on the departure of Simpson and some additional squad players.
