Downes Set For West Ham Medical
Thursday, 7th Jul 2022 10:27

Flynn Downes is reportedly set to undergo a medical at West Ham today ahead of his move from Swansea, who he joined a year ago, with the Blues set to profit from the deal.

The 23-year-old had looked set to join Crystal Palace but the Hammers, who Brentwood-born Downes supported as a boy, swooped before the Eagles were able to agree a fee with the Swans.

According to reports this morning, Downes, who left the Blues for the Swans for £1.4 million last summer, will move for an initial £9 million with the deal potentially rising to £12 million.

TWTD revealed yesterday that Town included a sell-on clause in last summer’s £1.4 million switch, which may be higher than initially anticipated with the EADT reporting that the Blues will receive 20-25 per cent of the profit the Swans make on the move.

That would see around £1.9 million due to the Blues - although in the manner of most transfers in instalments - with further cash due later along the line when milestone clauses are hit.

Town already have a significant transfer war chest this summer following last year’s takeover and, as reported earlier in the week, have lodged a £1 million bid with Leeds for left-back Leif Davis.

We understand Leicester striker George Hirst, who we revealed in May was among the frontmen interesting the Blues, is now very much a firm target.

The Hammers have held a long-term interest in Downes with TWTD having reported in March 2020 that the East Londoners were keeping tabs on the former England U19 international.

@blues1 I would say Hourihane is still a top midfielder who would get into alot of Championship sides, McGoldrick was doing very well in the prem 2 season ago and if stays fit is a great addition and Chester is a very solid Championship defender at a good age. Coupled with Bielik who is still in the Polish team and a number of impressive youngsters - Knight and Selby, with another few clever additions, they could have some team!

@blues1 we could sign Donald duck and you would be going wild with applause. If Hirst is our number 9 next season I hope he scores the goals that take us up

Some of the people on here crack me up 😂 when Derby sign freebies all 31 and over that's great business then same people then moan we've only signed freebies so far you really couldn't write it on here! Delusional.
Same people also moaning about Hirst and not being ambitious enough wouldn't be happy until we sign Kane or Salah get a grip we're in league one we get what we need this season and if we get promoted then improve again on players and so on you can't get top championship or premier league players in league one unless end of their careers

I hope our primary striker has a few years under his belt . A young striker isnt going to sustain the level over the whole season IMHO.

To quote Warren Buffet "Price is what you pay, value is what you get". That is one hell of a profit for Swansea for one season and West Ham have Premier league revenue which means the price is peanuts for them. The good news is that the sell on clause, means we have doubled the price that we got for Downes. Rejoice Ipswich fans as its more money to spend on players.

The only player i would have liked to have kept after Cook's mass clear out. People say his attitude was poor but he wasn't the only one, take for example Wolfenden who seemed to enjoy it when we got beat now he's one of our best players. If Downes had been at the club under McKenna you would have seen a different player.

Linkboy and blues1 still smarting over the departure of Cook and already building a ststue for McKenna. Why would you turn on your own fans who want to see us spend more than £750k needed to get Hirst. Why don't some of our fans have any ambition ? Embarrassing

A medical to make sure his gluteus maximus muscles can take it, sitting on that bench throughout the season will take the strain :)

Bossman because you need to understand where we are because of previous ownership. Yeah I'd like to see us spend some big dough on a striker but the way you bang on you won't be happy unless it's someone who's scored 20 plus in the championship or premier league last year we're league one mate get real. You wanna know how many goals David Johnson scored for bury before burley signed him? 18 goals in two seasons, Martyn Waghorn 7 goals in 34 games, Kuqi 19 goals in 64 games do you want me to go on?? None prolific until they came and showed what they can do with us so I'll listen to the manager who does the job and sees these players

@beatties get real. All I said is I'd like to see more ambition than Hirst. Your faith in let the manager decide worked out so well under Cook didn't it. Your putting words in my mouth that I haven't said to suit your own argument. I hope Hirst proves me wrong and proves you right but time will tell.
