Town to Match Fans' Ukraine Donations
Monday, 14th Mar 2022 17:12

Town are to match the £3,455.62 donated to The British Red Cross DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal by fans at the home game against Lincoln City last week.

The Blues and Imps showed their solidarity with the Ukrainian people by Town wearing all blue and the visitors their all-yellow third kit, while there was a minute’s applause before kick-off, a Ukraine flag continues to fly on top of the Cobbold Stand, along with blue and yellow corner flags.

The British Red Cross staged a collection inside and outside the ground with all proceeds going to those suffering in the war with £3,455.62 raised CEO Mark Ashton says the club will match that sum.

“It was great to see the players, staff and supporters of our club and Lincoln come together to show their support for the people of Ukraine,” he told the club site.

“The fans have dug deep to raise money for those who are suffering from the crisis, so it is only right that the club do our bit as well.

“The thoughts of everyone at Ipswich Town remain with the people of Ukraine and everyone impacted by this terrible ongoing conflict."

Emma-Jane Slater, senior regional fundraising officer with the British Red Cross, added: “Millions of people are at risk of the deadly consequences of conflict and we must get critical support to those that need it the most.

“We are extremely grateful to the club and the generous supporters who kindly donated to the appeal on the night.”

I was going to donate but didn't see any of the collections when walking to and around the ground.
I have now donated a few pound through a scheme local to me

Backwaywhen, many people are donating via other means. Also have to bear in mind that with the cost of living going through the roof, for some charity has to begin at home. I'd say 7k from a lge1 football club is a handsome sum!

Good effort given many of us don't carry cash a we can't spend it at PR anymore. Well done all.

Backwaywhen; by my reckoning it equates to 13.55 pence per head (I wasn't at the match).

I didn't see anything at the ground. I'd brought some cash as well as it also was for the community thingy as well.

To be fair I was unaware this had even happened, so its harsh to criticise people's generosity

Backwaywhen. What a crap comment. Many, like myself, have already given generously via other means. And far more than anyone would have put in the buckets going round.
Blocker123. The community day collection was against Pompey, not the Lincoln game btw.

It's quite poor really. I donated £20 through DEC online. I will give same again for Comic Relief. I dropped a loose £1 coin into a Red Cross bucket at Portman Road. Not over generous I would agree, but clearly far more than most.

I was one of the volunteers holding a bucket outside PR last Tuesday evening. Having participated in a number of collections for various causes over the past few years, £3,500 in just over an hour is an exceptional amount. Many of those who donated did so with notes and I had some great conversations with supporters who were grateful for our presence.

We were in red so it may not have been as apparent to many that we were collecting for the Ukraine appeal - however it's not right to criticise other's generosity; many will have donated via other means, people don't carry cash any more, etc. The Red Cross are trying to get another collection arranged at the end of the club before the end of the season so if you see us again, please pop a quid in the bucket!

If you're interested in helping out you can find out more about volunteering with the Red Cross below. I did so as a one off, but having enjoyed the experience will be looking out for more collections in the coming weeks:
