Former Boss Cook Rejoins Chesterfield
Thursday, 10th Feb 2022 10:47

Former Blues boss Paul Cook has rejoined his former club Chesterfield, who are currently second in the National League.

Cook, who was sacked by Town in December after nine months at Portman Road, was previously in charge at Chesterfield between 2012 and 2015 during which time he saw them to the League Two title and League One play-offs.

The Spireites were managerless after their Ipswich-born boss James Rowe departed by mutual consent on Friday having been suspended on January 24th.

Cook will be assisted by Danny Webb, the son of former Chelsea and QPR full-back David, first-team coach under Rowe and then caretaker-manager.

Chief executive John Croot told his club’s official site: “We are delighted to welcome Paul back to the club. He enjoyed great success here previously and to secure someone with his impressive track record is a real coup.

“Paul was our number one target when we began our search for a new manager and we are sure that our supporters will share our delight that he has agreed to take the role.

“Danny Webb is looking forward to working with Paul as part of the new management team.”

Elsewhere, another ex-Town boss, Roy Keane, is reported to have turned down the chance to return to Sunderland.

According to The Athletic, Keane was offered the job yesterday but has opted against a return to the Stadium of Light where he was in charge between 2009 and 2011.

This is his level, Liam Richardson's is higher it seems.

Btw I don't wish him badly or care if he does well either. PC's problem was he was found wanting and assumed if he did what he usually did it would all come right. Since he left we've won 6 drawn two and lost three and are still 6 points off the play-offs despite a promotion paced return from those games. I'm sure he is a nice bloke but clearly knew he was out of his depth and looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights in interviews. I think he's taken this job as he reckons a good chance of promotion unless they have an Ipswich style collapse in form on his arrival, which might falsely repair the damage to his reputation.

lol I like the comments of Sunderland dodging a bullet - they should have got him so he muck everything up for them and gives us a better chance for top 6 lol

I think this is a great appointment for Chesterfield and a great move for Cook. He will get them up and they will be competitive in league two. Probably get them promoted and be around the bottom half of league one. Cook is a superb lower league manager. Good luck to him.

jas0999… he's never been successful at the lower leagues without Richardson so I'd withhold judgement on whether he's good at that level until he's successful without him. It's not like he's take a forlorn hope with chesterfield. Hope the local golf course bar has upped their booze order.

Good luck to him and Chesterfield, always enjoyed a night at Saltergate back in the 90s. Credit where it's due for bringing much needed hope to us all along with the US buy out.

Km had shown that there was a good under the surface. He was unable to change tactically when something don't go to plan. His attitude towards last years team shows some poor ability for man management. Flexibility is key, all the best PC unless you play town

With Chesterfield being my second supported Team, I am more than happy to see PC as Manager.
It must not be forgotten that he brought some decent players in, and shifted a lot of dead wood out - as has since been proved … !!!
And was just 9 months long enough for him, after such a massive change in playing staff ??
Yet to be proven though is the fact he could still be missing Richardson, but Webb his now right hand man is no slouch in that department.
Good Luck Paul Cook and Daniel Webb in your new partnership and venture at Chesterfield - a great little Club in itself.
Wish you both well - just let Tishimanga keep knocking those goals in !! - don't blunt him, and keep him well fed with service.
