Town Sign Brentford Full-Back Thompson On Loan
Thursday, 27th Jan 2022 20:20

Town have signed left-back Dominic Thompson on loan from Brentford for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old was with Arsenal’s academy from 2012 until August 2019, appearing in the 2018 FA Youth Cup final, before joining the Bees without having made a senior appearance for the Gunners.

"The six-foot tall Willesden-born defender has made 14 starts for the West Londoners and spent the second half of last season on loan at Swindon, where he made 23 starts and two sub appearances, having picked up three assists as he helped the Robins to a 3-2 victory over the Blues at Portman Road on his debut.

The Bees have exercised an option to extend his contract to the summer of 2023.

This season, Thompson has made two Premier League starts for Brentford in addition to a further three appearances in cup games.

“This club can give me a platform to grow,” Thompson told iFollow Ipswich.

“Ipswich came on to my radar two or three weeks ago and I am really happy to have the move done.

“I spoke to the manager and the first chat I had with him really inspired me.

“I'm really looking forward to working with him and the group here, and hopefully developing my game.

“I've been checking the results recently and I know the team has been playing some really good football. I want to play my part now and help the group push for promotion.”

Town boss Kieran McKenna added: “I’ve known Dominic for a while, having been at Arsenal as a youth player.

“He is hungry to develop as much as he can and he has already had a loan move, so has experience in this division.

“He’s a good fit for the position because he’s a competitive defender but he can also contribute and have an impact higher up the pitch.

“Dominic is a good addition to the squad and we’re delighted to have him with us until the end of the season.”

Brentford director of football Phil Giles told his club's official site: “Dom has done well for us in the minutes he has played so far this season, especially in our home game against Manchester City.

“Unfortunately, he hasn’t played as much as I’m sure he would have wanted, so a loan to a good club such as Ipswich is an ideal solution.

“We look forward to welcoming him back in the summer, having extended his contract by a further year.”

Thompson is the son of former Great Britain discus thrower Neville, while his elder brother Greg has also competed in the same event.

The signing means there is now very significant competition for the left-back or left wing-back role with Matt Penney and Hayden Coulson both close to returning from injury, Kane Vincent-Young having started the last two games in the role but suspended on Saturday, while youngster Bailey Clements made his first four league appearances late in Paul Cook's time as boss.

Good news. With any luck he may be able to score from a corner!!

This seems logical with injuries/suspensions and what not. But also..... Edmundson has generally been very good this season. However, recently, playing on the left side of a back three he has struggled a little when playing out with his left foot and got caught a few times in the second half v Wimbledon. Having a balanced lefty might aid him in the continuation of 3 or if they revert to 4.

Phil, saying Clements is competition at wing back is stretching it! He was a desperate option earlier in season with a bad manager, but he's clear,y way off the standard. Nice try though!

Saw this lad play for Brentford against Man City online. Got the man of the match award from the TV Pundit and I certainly agreed. On the night, looked a class or two above League one.

Very astute move. He could bring something really great for us. Look forward to him starting on Saturday. Strengthens the left side considerably. He and Wes should be able to keep both sides of the Wednesday defence very busy ... coyb

Clearly a position we needed to strengthen. Very positive about this.

Suddenly Kenlock's exit makes sense. What has happened to our club. All of a sudden we seem to be making excellent, logical decisions. COYB

I have posted before my preference for 3 at the back to allow us to play 2 up front. But the key to success for that formation is the wing backs. Without the right personnel it doesn't work. Inevitably you are asking a full back to improve their attacking ability or a winger to improve defensively.
Wes Burns has grasped this role really well on the right. He scores goals, provides assists and covers defensively linking up really well with JD.
On the left side we haven't been anywhere near as good although KVY hasn't done too bad recently. This new lad could be the missing piece and will hopefully provide much needed assists for our strikers because we need to get them firing again.

KVY has done a reasonable job but he is, as others have said, very right footed. Clements out on loan, Coulson to go back? And then we recruit hard for this space in the summer. You never know, if this lad didnt make it at Arsenal and cant force his way into the brentford team, regular football for a club on the up might just appeal to him.
Either way, its good to have someone available tomorrow in that position naturally

Radlett_Blue; we used to have a left-back who kept wanting to get back onto his natural (right) foot. His name was Mick Mills and he did ok for us!

Dealing with the biggest problem at the club and you sense a pretty ruthless decision given the players we already have
KVY - given a chance not good enough
Penney - confidence shot and I'm 80% sure he's not good enough
Coulson - Crock
Clements - Who knows but I would not want to rely on him based on what I saw

A* here for McKenna and Ashton
