Town Closing in On Loan Signing of Bristol City Midfielder
Thursday, 20th Jan 2022 09:43

Town are closing in on the loan signing of Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson.

Football Insider reported earlier today that the Robins have given the go-ahead for Bakinson to go out on loan and TWTD can confirm that Town are indeed close to landing the 23-year-old until the end of the season.

London-born Bakinson came through the youth ranks at Luton before joining the City - where Town CEO Mark Ashton was then in charge - in October 2017 having made four senior starts and two sub appearances for the Hatters.

Since then the defensively-minded central midfielder has made 33 starts and 20 sub appearances, scoring five times, while also spending spells out on loan at Newport County in 2018/19 and Plymouth Argyle in the second half of the following campaign.

Contracted to his current club until the summer of 2023, the Robins having activated an additional one-year option in his contract late last year, Bakinson has been on the fringes at Ashton Gate recently with his sub appearance in the 6-2 defeat at Fulham on Saturday his first since December 4th.

It's understood the Robins would be prepared to allow him to depart on a full-time basis in the summer.

If the deal is confirmed, as it is looks set to be, then Bakinson will become Town’s fourth current loan player - alongside Bersant Celina from Dijon, Macauley Bonne from QPR and Hayden Coulson from Middlesbrough - with Christian Walton having signed on a permanent basis and Louie Barry returning to Aston Villa earlier in the month.

It's likely the move will be done in time for Bakinson to potentially make his debut in Saturday's home game against Accrington Stanley.

Sits deep in a 3-5-2 covering the back 3 CB's?

Don't know much about the lad so can't really comment, but we do need a strong central midfielder (particularly in the holding roll)...left back and a central defender.

This for me is an important sign ing if he has pace as i think our midfield is too slow.

George. Stop spouting rubbish. He's played 13 times this season, so hardly a reserve. And a championship player, so hardly a poor player. Unfortunately we still have fans such as you who will never stop being negative.
As for those saying this is down to Ashton? How predictable are fans on here. Id have bet my house on that being posted. I'm sure he'd have had an input, in as much as mckenna would have asked him about him. But if anyone thinks Mckenna would sign a player he didn't want, think again.

34 apps in a decent championship team, good age and is 6ft3. We lack height and cover for morsy and evans. If he does well he could replace evans sitting deeper allowing morsy to push up a bit

I agree with Len Brennan, we seem to have quite a few in that area already.

d77.....We might have 5 central midfielders, unfortunately none of them are good enough (Morsy apart) to get the team/ club into the top 6,let alone the top 2,which is where this club should aiming.
We are where we are for good reason, some are just not good enough.

Seems that he can score goals which Morsy and Evans do seem to be able to

Where is Rekeem Harper ??
Looked Like a better option than Evans in his initial games - now not on the bench.

Worrying - no longer clones of Cook , now clones of Ashton !!

Despite having a plethora of midfielders, how many of them are actually defensively-minded? Morsy and Evans maybe? If he's going to screen the defence then this is a position we actually need strengthening so could be a decent signing.

Morsy and Evans have had several off days. Woeful at Charlton, fine at Gillingham where they had acres of space and no opposition, poor at Bolton when pressed, where it all became so slow and predictable. All season they've moved the ball with pedestrian tempo through the middle of the park and lacked the drive and dynamic reputations that they joined with. Personally I'd sooner see a bit more of Harper, who has up to now been either terrific or terrible.

I expect KMc has decided that Carroll, Harper, and Nolan (remember him??) are not good enough. I hope Harper can be found a loan so that he can figure it out by regular playing time.

From a Luton-supporting friend:

"He was a funny fellow. He was part of that very Junior team that conquered Europe and which included James Justin.

"He broke through first and was very highly rated. He, or the stories went that his Dad, threw his toys out the pram when he wasn't being picked for the 1st team as much as he thought he should have been.

"At that stage everyone gave up on him and he went to Bristol, which was a step up from us then, and he played. Unfortunately they weren't going anywhere and we were on the rise. So, in many respects, it was his loss rather than ours. Who knows quite what his potential was and whether being patient would have been the right thing. He's not really impressed when we've played against him lately. But not everyone could be a James Justin."

Chin up everybody!! We trust McKenna and Ashton, in fact Ashton hasn't put a foot wrong so far, so need for doom and gloom, just trust the guys in charge!!!

I don't believe Ashton did this off his own back, he would have discussed it with McK. Good option to have imo.

I can see why Nolan Fraser
Harper even Evans have hardly set the world on fire. I think we may see 2 or 3 midfielders leave either on loan or permanent

Cannot see KM agreeing to have players thrust upon him ; this will be a move by mutual agreement and KM will believe he and his coaches can bring the best out of the man !

Ultimately I hope this is a McK signing out of choice rather than being told we should sign this chap and it being out of his hands.

I hope McKenna is actually getting the players he wants one hundred percent. Ashton has been treated like some kind of cult figure on the way he's getting players over the line. But not all of them have been a success have they which is why we are mid table. So let's have McKenna and his team targeting the players he wants and Ashton doing the deals.

He's been given a terrible reference by Pearson. Worth a read! Not that we should trust the first thing that a manager spouts; but questioning his attitude is an interesting one.
