Norwood: The Way We Fought and Won Was Fantastic
Thursday, 30th Dec 2021 14:44

James Norwood was delighted with the manner of the Blues’ 1-0 home victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Portman Road, in which he says the winning goal came off his knees, and is enjoying his 'Bash Brothers' strike partnership with Macauley Bonne.

Norwood bundled the first goal of the Kieran McKenna era over the line from close range a minute before half-time to see the Blues to their victory.

“It was enjoyable, the way they play, the way we fought against them and to win that way was fantastic,” Norwood told iFollow Ipswich.

“It’s a performance and a desire to win that we’ve been needing for a while now, so for us to score, keep a clean sheet and stem their long balls and everything else was a welcome thing.

“I think people have questioned us and our desire. I think the last couple of games have showed that it’s always been there and we’re putting it into place.

“The gaffer’s put us in certain positions, we’ve worked on things for the last couple of weeks and hopefully it comes to fruition and this was a little taste.”

Regarding his partnership with Bonne, he continued: “The gaffer said before the game, me and Macca are the Bash Brothers, if anyone’s seen [the 1992 ice hockey comedy] The Mighty Ducks. We throw ourselves about, we’ve been in non-league where it is a bit crash, bang, wallop and for us they’re enjoyable games.

“We’ve got players who have come down and play with real quality so we can mix it up. It can come in to me and Macca or we can go through Sone and Chappers, who love to play the ball to feet.”

The 31-year-old says he hopes he can help end Bonne’s 10-game goal drought: “I think people can see that we get on really well. If it’s not me scoring, hopefully he’ll start scoring. He had a chance today, he was unlucky with the offside, I’m not entirely sure it was offside, but one’s going to come off his shin or something and he’s going to go on another run.

“If I can give him something to chase or tap in I’ll be more than happy to. He’s working his nuts off for me and I’ve scored a couple now, so hopefully it’s his turn soon.”

Regarding his goal, his third in his last three league games and his fourth of the season, he said: “I think it summed up my performance, it came off both my knees and went in the net.

“I had a little bit of a struggle with the ball today, just forced to work hard but just by being in the right position sometimes you get lucky and it’s hit me on both knees and gone in.”

Well done Nors. Just keep your head down and let your goals n assists do the talking. As fans we all want wins, points and promotion.....but it starts with effort and desire from the players.... and last night that was there for all to see. COYB

Regarding desire: Nors is absolutely right. During the Cook era, we would've lost that game 2-1. The opposition would have out-run and out-fought us and grabbed a couple of scrappy goals and we would have gone home frustrated and depressed. Winning 50-50 games like this is how you get promoted. Losing them is how you end up in the third division. After watching last night's game, I am optimistic for the first time in years.

Minor correction: the Bash Brothers appear in the sequel D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996)

i like Nors he brings great fighting spirit to the team. But we need much more quality on the ball and in the air from our front men to really push up the table. Not to mention better service to them. Alot of passes and some crosses were poor.

Was great to see Nors' enthusiasm back and his partnership with Bonne (and I hope long the line with Pigott) will be key for us in teh 2nd half of the season

If Norwood can keep injury free we have a player that could get us in the playoffs, just need a cool head as a couple of times we saw the red mist decened last night.

I was calling for Bonne a Pigott up front not so sure now Norwood and Bonne/Pigott.

If Bonne goes back to QPR then Pigott

He definitely makes a big difference and although it is clear he is at his level , all that really matters is that he scores goals and is a general menace for defenders. Just goes to prove we need two up front. One winger from amongst the flair players is enough. Edwards as left wing back I think is a good call.

100% commitment from the whole team last night, when others see the fight in Norwood it gives them a lift and a boost too, especially Bonne. Need to sign a good left back like Wycombe had marking Burns and a left sided winger like Burns too. We need to be able to keep Burns fit as he supplies the ammo for our strikers, Aluko in midfield is a real handful and is really impressing me. Edwards for all the hype doesn't do it for me I'm afraid and I see Celina as a bit of a luxury that I'm not sure is worth a start when fit.

I've always loved James Norwood's style of play. Gives a hundred percent and don't give a toss about the defenders he's up against. Just hope and pray he stays fit which is his biggest issue.
Keep banging them goals in James and who knows a new contract could be in the offing!

Loved his honesty. Some of his passes and control left a lot be desired, but you can't knock his enthusiasm and work ethic.

Scruffy goals work for me.

He just needs to control his temper because the opposition know he can lose it sometimes and will play on it and suddenly we are down to 10 men.

We as a club still have a long long way to go. Won't take a few decent games here and there.

Nors MOM for me. Put himself about a lot. He even made a few crucial tackles on the edge of our own box. Donacien and Burns were excellent too. Wycombe overloaded their left flank with often as many as four attacking down that side but I thought we dealt with that threat very well. One minor nitpick for me was the number of cheap corners we gave away but what a great effort. Can't wait for the next game.

Future looks much brighter with the team now playing as a solid unit. Don't know how this guy has done it in such a short space of time he's obviously a very thorough coach. What was stand out for me on Wednesday was the performance of the central partnership of Edmundson and Wolfenden an area which has cost us dearly throughout the season. It's been a long time since we've had a solid centre of defence. I might be wrong but Wycombe only really had one clear cut chance. Evans and Morsy were also excellent just a shame Morsy couldn't have finished off that brilliant run with a goal. Lastly liked the pairing of Bonne and Norwood who really make opposing defences work hard and also restrict teams attacking options.

Agree linkboy. We more than matched them all Over the park. It's a shame about the two early bookings without which we'd have dominated the game.

If we ignore his off-the-pitch antics, we need more players like Nors to fight our way to promotion out of this league.

No one has mentioned Wolfenden, I am normally critical of his games because of his errors, but this has to be one of his best displays this season. Keep it up Wolfy.
