Town Closing in On Carroll
Monday, 16th Aug 2021 10:51

TWTD understands Town are closing in on the signing of free agent former QPR midfielder Tom Carroll.

Carroll, 29, left Loftus Road at the end of last season having turned down a new contract and had been training with Derby County in pre-season.

We understand the Blues’ move is well-developed and could be confirmed as soon as today with the player set to be at the club to complete the formalities relating to the deal.

Rumours that the former England U19 and U21 international was on Town's radar were circulating last month.

Manager Paul Cook watched the Rams' friendly at home to Real Betis in July in which Carroll played the first 56 minutes.

Born in Watford, Carroll came through the ranks at Tottenham and had spells on loan at Leyton Orient, Derby, QPR and Swansea while a White Hart Lane player before joining the Swans permanently for £4.5 million in January 2017.

A loan spell at Aston Villa followed before he moved to Loftus Road on a permanent basis in the summer of 2020.

Having added Cameron Burgess at centre-half at the weekend, central midfield looked the area of the squad most in need of cover and Carroll will compete with Rekeem Harper and Lee Evans for one of the two starting berths.

My Dad is a QPR fan an they seemed to have issues with his attitude, hence the contract not being renewed. From the QPR fans perspective at the time Dad said the guy thought he should be playing at a higher level and wasnt content in the championship - which is why he didnt take a new deal.

Anyone know any more about him?

Why do some people think because these are recent signings they are coming as cover. It's obvious Cook is trying to get two quality players for each position. No keeper is going to be at his best in front of a back four as shaky as ours. Even Bart struggled in his last season behind a very poor defence now he's regarded as one of the best in the championship winning the golden gloves award for best keeper in the championship.

Good business when analysed. 11 players in on long term contracts. Two in on 1 year deals to add experience and cover and three season long loans which may lead to permanents. 31 players out so far and can see several more by the close of the window , Kenlock especially , but not sure what level he will cut it at. We may need to loan out to begin with.

Cant believe somebody is questioning the keeper. He looks like he is a proper keeper in technique and a shot stopper. He makes good judgement calls, can kick well and covers goal with ease. It's not his fault we can't defend against league one opposition.

Looks like this completes the set unless Nolan is going to be long term.

Edit to my previous notes and apologies to Tom Carroll. Dad confirmed the player who was up himself was Tod Kane and not Tom.

Welcome Tom!
