Appiah Times Ahead For Town?
Monday, 5th Jul 2021 16:04

TWTD understands Town are keen to sign Almería winger Arvin Appiah this summer.

The 20-year-old joined Spanish second division side from Nottingham Forest in September 2019 for £8 million, signing a five-year deal, fending off other interested parties including Manchester United.

However, the former England U16, U17, U18 and U19 international has been unable to making an impact since moving to Spain.

Having made 21 appearances for Almería in his first season, scoring once - in addition to four games for their B side - he featured in just one league game in 2020/21 and in February was sent out on loan to another second division side, Lugo.

Born in Amsterdam, Appiah moved to Nottingham when he was six and came through the ranks at the City Ground before making a scoring senior debut as a sub in a 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Burton Albion in October 2018.

Appiah, who plays primarily on the right but also on the left or as a central striker, went on to make only three starts and a further four games from the bench for Forest before his big money move to Spain.

Given his lack of involvement in 2020/21 and his loan departure towards the end of the season, a move away from Almería either permanently or on another loan looks likely this summer.

Like their move for former loanee Bersant Celina, Town’s interest in Appiah illustrates the level of ambition the Blues have under their new ownership and manager Paul Cook.

How the hell did Forest manage to get £8m for him after just 6 games!!!

Kernewek. Either tell me my assessment is wrong or shut up. I'm just a fan of living in the real
World. Which bit of them wanting a big chunk of their money back, him probably being on big wages and him having had a very limited career do you disagree with?

Blues1 - but back to square one next summer. We need to learn from the days of having five or six loans in the team. As I say, two quality loans to supplement the team is certainly very advantageous. Such as having Fraser and the Lawrence in the past. But we are looking at a smaller squad, so I'd expect fewer loans.

Why are people going overboard on this? He played 6 times for Forest in the Championship in season 2018/2019. Zero league appearance in 2019/20 before being sold to Spanish 2nd Division Almeria in September 2019. He then made 21 appearances for Almeria in season 2019/2020 with a total of 851 minutes. Not even 10 full games. He made 1 appearance in 2020/21 before making 4 appearances for Almeria B in the Spanish 3rd Division. He was then loaned to Lugo in Feb 2021.
Is this the type of player we need to get out of this division?

Sorry about the pun thing!
In all honesty Realist is thinking what I'm thinking about this, he has undoubtedly lost his way in Spain and maybe a move here would be good for both parties, I would prefer a loan with an option to buy if it works out, but lets not get too carried away folks.

Reminds me of Ajiboye of Sutton. He would be a good signing as well

Never heard of him or seen him play so hard to comment. He must have some potential is he was once validated 8 million but people banded some silly figures around about the likes of Dozzell, Bishop, Downes, etc and none have come to fruition. However I am open minded and optimistic for this season and we have to trust PC and the new team. May all be dodgy rumours anyway !

As a Town Fan, now living in Southern Spain, and a season ticket holder at UD Almería....I'm probably in a far stronger position to offer a reasoned assessment than most on here!!! Arvin is clearly a player of great quality...but often flattered to deceive! Towards the end of the 2019/20 he was starting to develop into the type of player we all hoped for. Sadly he suffered (I believe) an appendectomy at the start of last season, resulting in an him needing an operation and missing pre-season and the first 3 months of the season. It was clear that his opportunities would be limited, and whilst a loan move made sense, I never thought that Lugo (who are an awful team) was the right move for him!!

Compared to the pile of poo that played for the Town last season, he would be technically light years ahead of any of those .....but I wonder if has the physical attributes to cope with the English 3rd tier. Also I do find this story a little strange, as Almería's new head coach Rubi, has said that he wanted to see Arvin in training before making a decision as to his future. Given that Los Rojiblancos don't start preseason until next week...it all seems a tad premature!!!

It's great that we are being linked with the likes of Celina and Appiah. Clearly either player would have an impact in League 1.

However, I'm more interested in the realities of who we and our competitors have signed. Some really good players signed by our opposing teams and this is going to be a highly competitive year in League 1. Seems everyone is pretty much aiming for automatic promotion or at least a top 2 place. Expectations across clubs are VERY high. Will be interesting to see how things play out. COYB!
