Bonne Loan Signing Close to Being Confirmed
Saturday, 26th Jun 2021 11:36

TWTD understands Town are close to confirming the signing of QPR striker Macauley Bonne on a season-long loan.

TWTD revealed earlier that the Blues are targeting the 25-year-old but we understand the deal is much further progressed than we initially reported and could be announced as soon as today.

Rumours that Bonne was interesting the Blues first surfaced in mid-May when there were claims that the Ipswich-born Zimbabwe international would be part of a swap deal with Andre Dozzell.

This was dismissed at the time - Dozzell eventually made the move for a £1 million fee - and earlier this month reports in West London indicated that Rangers wanted to keep hold of Bonne despite a first season at Loftus Road in which he scored only three goals in nine starts and 26 sub appearances.

However, we understand Paul Cook was very keen to bring Bonne back to Town, where he was a schoolboy in the academy, and QPR were more open to the move than had been previously suggested, although on loan rather than permanently.

Having been released by the Blues, the one-time Chantry High School pupil moved on to Norwich’s youth set-up and then Colchester where he broke into their first team early in the 2013/14 season.

While at the JobServe Community Stadium he spent time on loan at Lincoln City and Woking and in his four years with the U’s netted 15 times in 25 starts and 59 sub appearances.

Bonne moved to Leyton Orient in July 2017 where he enjoyed an impressive two years scoring 45 goals in 89 league starts and one sub appearance.

That form attracted then-Championship Charlton Athletic, who he joined in June 2019 and where he found the net 12 times in 32 starts and eight sub appearances before moving to QPR for a reported £2 million in October last year, signing a deal which runs to the summer of 2023.

That first team squad is growing nicely now with Dobra and this guy on top of Harper yesterday. 3 more new or stepping up from U23s?

After the last two days we can repeat the quote from Ch Supt Hastings in Line of Duty ‘NOW WE'RE SUCKING DIESEL!'

No point in signing too many strikers as we will only play with one up top. Probably need 3 in total. Norwood, Bonne and one more to compete with each other for the number 9 spot. It will be the 3 in behind that will hold the key. We SHould get rid of Jackson and Drinan. Neither are good enough.
Now we need a couple of new centre backs. We let our best one go (Wilson) and neither Wolfie or Nsiala fill me with much confidence.
Looking forward to this season though I expect us to be far more aggressive going forward.

Nothing wrong with the right loan.

I personally not a fan of loans, but that said said, one or two (maximum) quality loam additions to supplement a mainly permanent squad is certainly a reasonable strategy. Don't know much about this guy.

Doesn't scream exciting but that's to be decided if he joins. Strikers who don't score we have plenty.

Agree with jas0999 about 1 or 2 quality loans max. The important thing with this lad is if we get promoted we could realistically buy him whereas loans we Could never sign permantly seem pointless , its a sort of try before you buy scenario

Sounds promising, decent goalscoring record before QPR, but I'm not getting too carried away yet as I need to see the team as a whole when it's completed before getting too excited.
We've had too many false dawns in the past.

Definitely a good signing. We need someone like this to run the frontline and create some mix ups in the opposition positioning. If he can affect two defenders at a time that will make things a lot easier for those behind him running into the spaces and blindspots that he has created
