Former Town defender Neil Thompson has resigned as caretaker-manager of Boston United claiming his position at York Street had become "untenable". His decision was particularly ironic as victory over Swansea earlier in the evening had taken the Lincolnshire side off the bottom of the league.

Thompson took over the manager's job on a temporary basis after Steve Evans was suspended from his position as manager pending an FA hearing into allegations of contract irregularities.

With rumours that another man may be appointed as manager at some point in the near future, Thompson has decided to leave the Pilgrims, despite this evening's 1-0 victory over Swansea taking them off the bottom of the table for the first time in their short league history.

Thompson, popular amongst Town fans in his seven years at Portman Road, left himself out of the starting line-up this evening then, after the game, announced his resignation: "My position has become untenable. It has got nothing to do with the playing side.

"I have my dignity and I leave the club having got them off the bottom of the league, despite our summer points deduction."

His chairman Des Wood accepted his decision but felt it was a wrong one.

Town youngster Steve Burton is currently on a three-month loan spell at York Street and scored his first senior goal in the recent Worthington Cup match against Bristol Rovers.

Thompson left Town in the summer of 1996, joining Barnsley. After that he spent time with Oldham (loan) and then York and Scarborough both of which he managed, before joining the Boston coaching staff last season, helping them to the Nationwide Conference title.
