Lambert: Bennetts Gives Us Something Different
Friday, 2nd Oct 2020 20:27

Boss Paul Lambert says new loan signing Keanan Bennetts will give the squad something different in wide areas.

The 21-year-old joined for the season from Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier this afternoon.

“He was brought to our attention a few weeks ago, I think he’s gone under the radar because Gladbach are a Bundesliga club, a massive club," Lambert told the official site.

“It’s difficult to break in because of the way the club is. It’s a Champions League team.

“From the bits I’ve seen, I think he might give us something dynamic. He’s quick and left-footed which is great. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does.

“Hopefully he comes in and helps the same way Mark McGuinness has. Hopefully he comes in and gives us something different. If he does, then it’s a win-win for everybody.”

Bennetts, who was with Tottenham as a youngster before his move to Germany in 2018, operates primarily as a left-sided forward, an area Lambert has been looking to strengthen this summer.

“We felt in the wide areas we were a little bit short,” he added. “Young Jack [Lankester] coming back is a definite bonus but if I was to rely on Jack to play a lot of the games after the injury he had then I'd be foolish.

“Freddie [Sears], Gwion [Edwards] and Judgey [Alan Judge] are there but we definitely needed something different.”

Always amazed by the amount of players we sign who give us something different. Welcome aboard though. 👍

I think that's fair. In a 4-3-3 you are looking for pacey forwards in the wide roles, playing on their preferred side of the pitch, to get the best out of it.
It doesn't suit Judge, who doesn't have the discipline to stay there anyway, but with Teddy & Nolan ahead of him for the advanced midfield role, that's his only option at the moment I guess. Gwion Edwards has done well so far, and yet he is not a clear fit for it either.
Jack Lankester is our best suited player to that role, with Freddie Sears the next best. In reality we needed help & when it became clear we weren't getting Ben Woodburn, it made sense to look further afield. We now have the direct, pacey runners we need on both sides, with more tricky options like Edwards & Judge to compliment & give a different approach.

Maybe an out and striker from the German League would also be an option as I fount we'll see much from our current injured strikers this side of Christmas.

Just from his clips he looks fast, direct, really competitive and like something that actually does give us something different, would love to see him Jackson and edwards (who I think has been excellent since he's played in his actual position)

I am still not convinced about this 4-3-3 formation that PL keeps talking about.
All of the games so far that I have seen have seen us set up in a 4-5-1 formation (or a 4-1-4-1 when Dozzell sits deeper.
I am certainly not complaining as results speak for themselves but I do worry when we are pressed that we have no real outlet, and Drinan and Hawkins have often looked very isolated.
Edwards has been one of our better players especially going forward supporting the lone striker, but is often found deeper covering for Chambers which is not what a 'forward' should be doing. The same can be said for Sears wrt defensive roles
I think that Bennetts is a great addition to the side and as mentioned by PL sort of gives us something different but imo it is from a wide midfield not as a striker !!!

Freddie doesn't give us much wide and can't see him playing down the middle, very good impact player to have on the bench though. I think Lambert would like to pair Hawkins up front with Jackson this would be a good combination and they would compliment each other as long as Hawkins keeps showing the promise we saw last week.

The service into the forward areas has already improved greatly this season and should be improved even further with the addition of Lancaster, KVY and Bennets. We need Hawkins to get a bit of luck in front of goal and for Jackson and Freddie to learn how to stay onside. Then we could really turn some teams over.
