Town Down to Ninth
Wednesday, 26th Feb 2020 09:21

Town dropped one place down to ninth in League One following last night’s fixtures, their lowest position of the season.

Oxford United, who defeated the Blues 1-0 at Portman Road at the weekend, jumped ahead of Town via a 3-0 home victory over Accrington Stanley.

Elsewhere, the top two, Coventry and Rotherham, drew 1-1 at St Andrew’s, Sunderland scored a late equaliser at home to Fleetwood with their game ending in the same scoreline and Portsmouth beat the MK Dons 3-1 at Fratton Park.

As a result of those games, the Blues, who have 11 games to play along with most of the teams above them, are now nine points off the top two and three from the top six.

Fourteenth-placed Blackpool, who Town visit on Saturday afternoon, defeated fellow Lancastrians Bolton Wanderers 2-1 last night.

Simply not good enough for promotion this season I'm afraid. Those saying 100 points and 100 goals at start of the season must be feeling a little silly now. We do not look streetwise or physically strong enough for the league, as shown by us being bullied by Rotherham recently. Not scoring enough goals and not looking likely to score goals either puts pressure on the defence, which as shown is suspect at times. Those calling for Evans to go. Replace with who? Sell the club, are we a profitable investment for a prospective buyer? No. May be that we need to sell our so called prized assets, I.e. Downes and woolfenden, in the summer to then recruit lower league cheap options and / or look at our academy. May be that we're looking at another season or two in this league. Look at bury fc, at least we have a club to support....

The worst thing is that our manager is absolutely clueless on how to set up a team and what tactics to use. Seem to me he just picks a team and then hopes they will win. No plan A let alone a plan B if that does not work.

Norfstanda, at least we're better off than Bury?!! Could you possibly set the bar any lower for your club?!

"we're drifting into that McCarthy mode where the manager is pals with the players and there's no real pressure to win and we just drift away" It's been like that since day one when PL was appointed. All the hype buying drinks for supporters, paying for the away coaches etc etc. The guy hasn't a clue, you only have to look at his substitutions, left until its far to late to change things (I feel sorry for the players when he brings them on for a cameo roll when the game is already out of reach). Apart from when he was up the A140 his records speaks for itself. I cant believe so many were taken in by it all.

In Norfolk we are now a joke! It's hard living up here now. Slow death in this league. What on earth were you thinking Marcus giving PL a five year contract? The only saving grace is we should stay in this league based on our early success.

But the football is better and we've got our club back now. That's what really counts, right?

I have a sneaky suspicion we've been had by a wolf in sheeps clothing and Lambert has and always will be NCFC. His ploy being to ruin us and take us as far down as he can, seeing how gullible Evans will be before he sacks him.
I fully expect him to say "Ha, Ha, you dumb feckers fell for me" when he leaves, to a huge welcome home party by the carrot crunchers up North and made manager.
We then have egg on our face and the knowledge we've been well and truly had.
The Budgies all seem in on it but we're clueless as to what's going on.

I broadly agree with @Umros here.
We are 'extremely unlikely' to finish above Rotherham, Coventry, Sunderland or Portsmouth now; but after that, we are only 'unlikely' to finish above Wycombe, Fleetwood, Oxford or Peterborough, so in reality we are probably in a group of 5 (although Doncaster could ...) still chasing 2 playoff spots. Unlikely the way we are playing, but not impossible if we just sort out some basics in terms of creativity & finishing.

It's alright apparently Blackpool can't score either. Should be an entertaining mid-table mediocrity game on Saturday I think not. Looking forward to more musings of Lamberts book of cliches come post-match - we're now the hunters rather than the hunted's a pure classic! Utter idiot.

We will never succeed with Lambert, yes we can blame ME for lack of funds but a good manager with this squad would get the best out of the lads and win this league.Lambert has lost the dressing room, now he's losing the fans.

PL is to blame for our failings this season. If a manager is incapable of getting the best out of possibly the best squad in this league then he should be released from his duties.A manager in any business who fails will almost certainly get sacked.Mr.Evans why did you give PL a five year contract that is the question I ask and one almost certainly he cannot answer because he doesn't know the answer himself.Heartbreaking times ahead I'm afraid.(I just hope I'm wrong in my prediction).😢

Agree with martin (above)...compare our squad with the likes of Wycombe/Fleetwood/Oxford and Gillingham (who haven't been beaten in 15 games) and has to be better...one man will have the finger pointed at and that is PL if we fail to make it to the play-offs.

Imagine if we have a couple of weeks or so with nothing to play for?...there will be trouble at mill!

We should have been able to cope being the ‘Hunted!!' Wish I had glimpses of any motivational skills from our coach.. didn't seem to work at Villa and Stoke. If these players and our coaching staff can't deal with a fraction of pressure, their futures will be bleak

Oh dear, what a state we find ourselves in!

A lot of fans are very quick to blame our current woes and dreadful league position on the manager, which I feel is a bit unfair. His position is a little like a road worker who is tasked with moving 10 tons of gravel and then handed a fork!

When it comes to dishing out blame for our slide down the leagues, the ball lands fairly and squarely in the court of one Mr M Evans... our increasingly wealthy, short-sighted, frugal owner.

He has asked our manager to juggle several balls with both hands tied behind his back... not an easy task!

Anyway, as is expected of us fans, let's back our wonderful saviour, Mr Evans, his investment policy and his multi-point plan to be top of the league... National League South!

Can't say I see us finishing much higher than that.
The worst squad we've had in years, an owner that didn't strengthen when we were in a position of authority, a manager that seems to be losing the plot more as each game passes, countless injuries, suspension of our only firing Striker, and a dreadful home record with plenty of home games still to be played!

Get used to League One everyone, this will be the high water mark for quite some time.

When will it sink in ?
We hounded out a manager capable of getting the best out of his squad and reaching the championship play offs and replaced him first with someone totally out of his depth followed by someone lacking in tactics and motivational skills. We are where we deserve to be. Football is all about results and the place to worry about playing attractive football is when you are mid table in the Premier league.
Would anyone really care about the type of football if we were ten points clear at the top of the league?

Of all 4 of the "strikers" we have I would have the most faith in Freddie to put the ball in the net , just play centrally on the floor via Bishop etc no over the top garbage!! I have little to no faith anymore but m,aybe thats the way to go because this season everytime i think it may be improving and I get myself up for the game Oxford happen, or Wimbledon happens or worst one Gillingham happens ...the points we have lost against awful teams this year is inexcusable. However that being said i would love to see Freddie show them the way given a full chance in a correct position and not chasing Chambers lobs down the line.

Bluearmy 81. I was making the point that there are teams such as bury, and Bolton if you like, who have financially struggled and have gone bust or close to going bust. Also why shouldn't Mr Evans be called mr?! At least show the bloke some respect by referring to him as Mr, after all isn't he the person that took Ipswich out of administration and is putting his money into the club to keep it afloat?
