Tuesday, 25th Feb 2020 16:13

Academy scholar Tommy Smith has signed his first professional deal with the club, a contract which runs to the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season.

Smith, 18, made his senior bow as a half-time sub in the Leasing.com Trophy tie at Peterborough in December.

The second-year scholar, a left-back, is currently on loan with hometown club Bury Town in Bostik Division One North.

Smith is one of nine academy youngsters to have made their senior bows this season, along with Bailey Clements, Alex Henderson, Tawanda Chirewa, Armando Dobra, Liam Gibbs, Tommy Hughes, Brett McGavin and Tyreece Simpson.

Guess this is good news having never seen him play. If nothing else, somebody ME can sell in a year or two.

Let's get all the youngsters in the match day squad.
And make a real push for promotion to the Championship over the next few seasons.
The deadwood will be gone, and we don't buy quality.
It's our only realistic chance of any kind of future success.

I agree stick him against Blackpool and drop Chambers, our season is over so give them some game time.

I know lots of points to play for but can any of you see us beating Sunderland or Portsmouth or Peterborough in the play off.

Just more disappointment

Wouldn't want us to give up on the season yet, just can't do that however unlikely promotion looks. 73, agree about the push over the next few seasons. It's going to take time to fix us but sadly in football that's a luxury never afforded, not by fans and not by players. Neither will hang around for change.

Seen him play for Bury quite stylish left back but in typical Ipswich tradition he's quite small and needs to develop physically. To just chuck youngsters in to the first team would be stupid before they are ready physically and could end up injured just like Dozzell and Nydam. In my opinion i dont think we have any outstanding youngsters that are ready to play in the first team yet.
