Ex-Blues Boss Hurst Sacked By Scunthorpe
Wednesday, 29th Jan 2020 16:57

Former Town boss Paul Hurst has been sacked by Scunthorpe United only eight months after taking charge.

Hurst and his Town assistant Chris Doig were relieved of their duties this afternoon following last night’s 3-0 defeat at Northampton which leaves the Iron in 16th place in League Two.

“Scunthorpe United would like to announce that manager Paul Hurst and assistant manager Chris Doig have left their positions at the club with immediate effect,” a club statement reads.

“We thank them for their efforts during their time at the club and wish them well for the future.”

Hurst's record at Glanford Park, having taken over in May last year, reads played 38, won 12, drew 10 and lost 16.

The Scunthorpe job was Hurst’s first in football after his disastrous 149-day spell with the Blues.

Some so called ITFC fans prove how sick and sad they are with their comments - decent people disassociate themselves with such comments.
No one should be ridiculed when losing a job - can only assume that the one's who do, have never had one, otherwise they may think differently.

Cornishblu, you are priceless. The numpties deserved what they got from BIg Mick. He had faced their abuse for weeks.

I seem to vaguely remember a poll and generally overwhelming consensus on this site that the fans favourite to take over from Mick was Paul Hurst over Jack Ross, someone "young and hungry", "upcoming", "we don't mind a rebuild if it means we bounce back better", "can find "hidden gems"" etc kind of manager. I could make a long list of what was on fans shopping list and he fitted the bill with seemingly most on here.
What a big difference a couple of years makes.
I'm no PH lover like some of you will cry, I wasn't convinced from his record that he'd done anything to be the person to change our fortunes around or take a gamble on, but I gave him the support through thick & thin & it just didn't work out. I hold no malice, no silliness, no grudges against him. He seemingly did his best but wasn't good enough for what we all expected. Evans did what we asked and hired him and we got what we deserved. Could have worked out brilliant if dreams came true but reality kicked in and it didnt.
We need to grow up, move on and stop living for '78. '81 etc. We need to stop moaning about every manager that we ever had except Bobby and Alf (who the fans moaned about before they finally became successful). Harking back to the "good old days". We (as a club) have no money, we (as a club) have the best manager our owner will hire, we (as a club) spend above our means and we (as individuals) don't lose a penny from our own pockets for it. Face it, we are geographically located in the boonies, we have very little appeal to most of the nation, we're not a "sexy" club, we have clubs in our own league that have a far bigger fanbase and population than we do to pump money into the club who are going through the same issues we face or worse that historically were in the top flight and tasted glory.
Everyone has a "right" to feel they need to gloat at PH because of our history with him if that makes them feel better, but that still doesn't solve any of the issues we fundamentally face. We have little money, poor prospects and have fought for many decades above our weight. We all deny it though. We manage as best we can but we are unattractive to any takeovers for so many reasons, and therefore things are only going to get better when we start to fight back above our weight again, and on current form that's unlikely for a while.
Unless we get out of this division this season by pulling together as fans, club, management and team, we are likely to face many more seasons at this level.
We fans are part of the problem, but also part of the solution.

Hurst was given the time at previous clubs.
Not at ITFC or scunthorpe.
He took Shrewsbury to the L1 play offs, very difficult to do, as we will find out.
Big players sold ie Waghorn was the clubs decision, as always. Not Hursts.

Another stupid decision from owner Swann. Hurst was faced with a massive rebuild and was not given the time needed, just as happened at Ipswich.

The majority probably laughing at this and saying he is rubbish etc are probably the same ones that were happy we were getting what seemed like an upcoming manager that could get the best out of a squad.

Im not going to laugh and say I am happy about this, as its just nasty to be honest, I am however happy that he is no where near or involved with our club after what he did in the short time he was here.

Maybe a few should consider showing a little class from time to time.

R2d2 and we as town fans had put up with rubbish football for 2 years. Why dont you go to work tomorrow and tell you're customers to F off, even if they are stupid and see how long you stay in employment.

SheffieldTractor - those stats should keep a few of his knockers quiet - that's if they understand them ...... !! - and that's not gauranteed.

Whatever the stats, whatever the opinions, nobody can deny that his man management skills were appalling! Does everyone forget how he treated Bart on derby day? Blueboy, a difference of opinions does not warrant questioning somebody's intelligence.

Few facts which some posters seem to have forgotten:-

McCarthy - played a large part in destroying our footballing tradition along with disconnecting the fans from the club. Attendances were down to an all time low and gesturing to the fans at the Norwich game ((our most loyal fans) to ‘ up yours' was untenable.

Hurst - played a decent system and was unlucky to get the sack (IMO) after a good if not fortunate win at Swansea. There were a few easy games coming up which could have turned our fortunes around. Forget all the assumption which apparently went on behind the scenes cause no one on here probably knows the true facts.

Bart - let In so many soft goals he had to be dropped. I counted at least 10 goals he had gifted the opposition and this was a large factor in why we eventually went down. The manner in the way this was dealt with was questionable, but certainly deserving.

That's my take on things, comments welcome.

100% agree Cat. Although will add...Bart wanted out the moment Mick ma left. As did proper bloke Jonas.

I think Hurst's ego was an issue for us. He seemed to alienate players as a way to stamp his authority. Hurst didn't have a CV as either a player or Manager to do that with a championship club. Do I rejoice he's been sacked by Scunthorpe? Nope, I couldn't give a flying F as I'm not a Scunthorpe fan. I'm glad we sacked him and also was never in favour of hiring him. However he was what the moaners demanded. I reckon league two is his level and I'm sure he'll get back on the manager merry go round soon enough.

Cat, not sure how Hursts system could be considered decent? Decent systems win games surely? Regarding Bart if he was out of form then yes, drop him. An explanation and more than 10 minutes notice would be respectful though in my opinion. I dont know what went on behind closed doors but our senior players certainly had issues with him.

Saxon - the system/formation he used was 4.2.3.1 which happens to be my favourite, which provides good defensive cover and relies on the 3 behind the striker breaking with speed. The villa home game when Edun got sent off was a memorable game where we played some top stuff.
It was not imo Hurst fault that Garns and Waggy left, which left us short on quality with too many new faces to bed in to quick.

Good for Scunthorpe.
I hate that man for destroying our club.

Really Bobble? All but Hurst was given time.
Personally I enjoyed going to football again, as of Hurst 1st league game V Blackburn. Even getting beat most weeks was better than Mick ma's rubbish.
I for one got what I wished for.

Saxon. Systems of play dictate how attractive the football is.
Dosnt guarantee wins.
And it appeared at the time certain senior players never welcomed Hurst.
It was all to easy under Mick ma. All of a sudden there was a manager who talked tactics. All they was used to was lump it 1st and foremost. Pretend the midfield dosnt exist.

ITFCsince73 added 08:54 - Jan 31
When the midfield contained Skuse and Dougie it didnt exist.
Hurst will go down for me as the one, who made me enjoy going to football again.
