Blades Linked With £3m Woolfenden Move
Tuesday, 14th Jan 2020 10:07

Sheffield United are reportedly planning to offer Town £3 million for central defender Luke Woolfenden.

News of the Blades’ interest in the 21-year-old emerged over the weekend and, according to The Sun, manager Chris Wilder is “ready to pay” £3 million for Woolfenden his scouts having given him rave reviews.

Wilder is also said to be targeting a £7 million move for Anderlecht's Belgium international centre-half Elias Cobbaut.

Academy product Woolfenden is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season.

Asked about interest in Woolfenden and midfielder Flynn Downes on BBC Radio Suffolk's Life’s a Pitch on Saturday, general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill said Town are keen to hold on to their young players but didn’t entirely rule out their departures.

“Those players that you’ve mentioned, I’m sure they are on other clubs’ radars and lists,” he said.

“The football club doesn’t want to be in a situation to sell our young players, they’re here for us to try and help our club to go forward.

“As [owner] Marcus [Evans] has said and [manager] Paul [Lambert] has come out and said on a number of occasions, if there’s an economic business situation we cannot turn down then we’d have to look at it separately.

“But the plan is we want those young players to be here, along with the senior players to drive the club forward.”

He added that no firm offers had been received: “We’ve had no bids for our players. We’ve had enquiries about whether would we sell, similar to you asking the questions now. They know the good players.

“We’ll have scouts at this game today, we’ll have scouts at every game we play. If they’re playing well, they’re on other clubs’ lists.

“They’re also international players that play for their countries, so they’re on other people’s radars from that side of things.”

Come on folks, be realistic.

ANY premier club can have ANY third division player they choose.

Again, it's not Evans fault, Lamberts fault or the players fault.

It isn't about the fee.

Even if you were the most loyal employee ever, the chance to play in the premier league and a tenfold increase in your weekly pay packet would mean you're off.

LOL

£3m literally no chance.

The sell on clause we'd add to that alone would make it pointless.

I should have added to my last post - that I can hear Lambo laughing from here!

He spoke casually of bids of £30m for our youngsters the other day, setting expectations for other clubs. It indicates £20m and add ons minimum.

Evans won't treat a £30m asset with 3 years on his contract stupidly.

Nothing to see here, except "Blades are interested"

I cant see why Evans can't wait till the end of the season... if we get promoted he stays.. if we don't he goes... his stock will only rise between now and then..

Evans would sell his granny if the money was right.

To clarify, I am not suggesting that we sell the player for a cheap price. All I wanted to do was to give some people a bit of perspective about what is a fair price if the owner wants to sell because he probably will!

I am one of those people who is strongly against the way the owner runs the club, and you can check that if you look at all of the comments I post here. I just think that we have to be ready for bad news in one area of the team at least either here or in midfield

Any Manager worth their salt, and Wilder certainly is, knows that this player has all the attributes to go to the very top of the game.
Forget the hideous posts on here, fact is that as a third tier Club we have little or no chance of hanging on to him - and neither should we expect to, he is capable of playing a higher level already.
With all considered, and assessed, I'd set the required fee at £8-10 million, he has that kind of ability and potential - already.
He will be in the spotlight of many Clubs for sure.

You all know we got relegated, right? Not many players leave League One for bumper fees so why should we be any different? I agree it doesn't seem a lot given the multi-million fees being handed about at the top of the game, but we're far from at the top of the game. We should hold our nerve and hold on until the summer when hopefully we will be back in the Championship and able to offer either better football here or gain a higher fee if he wants to go

if we want to get promoted we dont sell anyone of value to the team,if we go up and luke performs next season as well, this time next year we could be looking at selling for twice the fee,i think if kane young was still playing he would be getting targeted as well no doubt, why sell now anyway? if we fail to go up then more likely they will go in the summer like most league 1 clubs who lose there best players to the leagues above.

Luke's is up there with the best. Fee to any club should mirror it, or I've had enough!!!!!

Ivan Toney has a £13m price tag, whilst he's scoring at one end Woolfy is stopping them at the other in the same League, the pundits keep reminding us that young quality English defenders are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, keep him until the summer at least, let the bidding war begin...

Sad, but some of the posts on here defy any form of logic, but then again isn't it typical of this Country of today ?
Better times are sadly in the past, and don't some of us know it ... !!

Of course selling Woolfy would make us more likely to be able to afford Garbutt.........

Gutted if this goes ahead especially as he should have been here last two years, knew he was always going to be a very good player. This is the reality we are in the 3RD TIER, can't blame him taking a chance to play in the PL.
