Portman Road to Be Given Makeover
Monday, 13th Jan 2020 18:44

Town owner Marcus Evans has restated his commitment to giving Portman Road a makeover in the months to come.

The roof of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand, which will require the closure of Sir Alf Ramsey Way, will be cleaned in March, while additional club branding will be added to the stadium along with improvements in decor.

“We are also in the process of providing more Ipswich Town branding around the concourses with the Legends of Ipswich Town mural in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand just the start,” Evans wrote in Saturday’s match programme.

“The Cobbold Stand has been improved in look with further plans to enhance that in the summer.

“These are small steps on a long journey but I will aim to tick items off the list every season including those cosmetic improvements to the stadium.”

A mural paying tribute to the club’s history is planned for the windows at the back of the Cobbold Stand.

Sally Jackson, a final-year fine art student at the University of Suffolk, was behind the Legends of Ipswich Town mural and will continue her involvement.

“I’m thrilled with how the mural has gone down with the supporters,” Jackson told the club site.

“I was at the game against Bristol Rovers and it was lovely to see the fans taking photos and chatting amongst themselves about the artwork.

“The club recognise there are other areas of the stadium that could do with a bit of a makeover and I’ll be working with them to put some ideas on to paper.”

Brilliant but embarrassing it took Paul Lambert to come in to get these kinds of things done.

Cue the usual negative comments from some then !

A few flakes of paint must be falling off those turnstiles then :)

Agreed though, the stadium feels and looks like it harks back to the early 90's.

Small but significant steps and they've been sticking out like a sore thumb for years and years ; what on Earth our previous ‘M.Ds ‘ thought their job was ,lord only knows !
So now ME has improvements in his sights let's be thoroughly appreciative ,and at least start again to register our pride in our Club and our Home .

seem basic cleaning of the roofs of the stands wouldn't go a miss and the flying of the cross of st George on the cobbold stand.

Are we the only club to moan when something positive is done?

All in favour of renovating our very tired ground.
Would really like to see a couple of large screens installed as well. Most larger grounds now have them and they provide some good information and entertainment.
Could have one installed above the players entrance tunnel and one on the Cobbold stand roof at the corner of the Sir Bobby stand. Both those locations would not obscure vision.

Much needed, great it's happening..

I'm I the only one who'd like to see a big screen..? We must be the biggest stadium that's not got a screen lol

Great news! A club to be proud of. So many grounds look bland/empty outside or within the concourse. Murals, artwork and statues provide an opportunity to educate and remind fans of the fantastic moments, managers, staff, teams and players we have had.

Climbing the divisions from the 50s through to the 60s, ultimately winning the big prize. To consistent top 6 finishes in the 70s. Texaco cup, Fa Cup, Uefa Cup, inaugural season in the premiership, play off winners, unbeaten at home in europe......so many to choose from!

Lets hope we have further success to add to the mural.

No good crossing anything off a list. It's a ongoing thing.
The ground needs regular maintenance.
Once every 10 years isn't much good.

Let's give Evans credit where do, small steps but in the right direction for sure. Overdue maybe, but it's happening, so let's be happy with that. Hope the Manager loses his recent acidity towards the people who ultimately are his paymasters (us) - and results justify the revamped image.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you Mr Lambert, this could be your last post in the game.

Would prefer to see us pulling out all the stop to strengthen the squad and maximise the chances of promotion as we HAVE TO go up this season.

Excluding most premier grounds, in my eyes the stadium and immediate areas aren't bad in comparison with championship clubs. Agree that a couple of screens would add to the experience but other than that it's about keeping up with basic maintenance. How many grounds have a fan zone area and kick about space for kids ? It's a traditional stadium and does what it says on the tin.

Would be helpful if Scc could fix the many potholes outside on Portman Road.

A nice touch by Evans. Maybe to commemorate his time in charge he could commission Sally Jackson to produce a mural depicting all the iconic managers he's appointed during the past decade and the successes the club has enjoyed under his tenure.

No need for a big screen. What the hell would we show on it? Anyone who's been to MK Dons will know that it's a major annoyance during the game.

On a more serious (not) note, I think we should have pyrotechnics along the top of the North stand. You know, ones like when wrestlers make their entrance. For when we score ;)

Well done PL.
There's no doubt this will increase the feel good factor around the place and stop us being a laughing stock among similar sized clubs. I hope ME is going to bring this club kicking and screaming into the 2020's!!! (even the 1990's will do to be honest!)
ME please visit a few other grounds to see what we need and how far behind everyone else we are...

*Big Screen or two (like every other ground has) with potential advertising income
*Digital advertising around pitch (like every other ground has) with potential advertising income
*New Turnstile blocks (these are literally from the 70's/80s)
*New/modern IPSWICH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB lettering on top of Cobbold Stand
*New/modern IPSWICH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB lettering on exterior of Britannia Stand
*Render over and paint that awful pebble dash in Cobbold Stand (pitch side)
*Lick of paint and jet wash everywhere
*Clean the roofs of Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson
*New ticket office (rather than a porta-cabin - I've heard away fans literally laughing at this!)
*Renovated Players entrance/gates (rather than an even smaller porta-cabin)
*Permanent fencing around the 'practice pitch' area rather than the temporary refurbishment boarding that people use when re-fitting a shop!
*More things going on around the ground on match days.. Ipswich TV fans interviews, Local indie/rock bands playing music, or just music playing from speakers on the outside of the stands pre-kick off.... anything to create an atmosphere. If you do this, people will come early and spend more money.
*Finally, get rid of that 'Singing the Blues' song at kick off. Bloody awful and embarrassing. Might as well have the Macarena!! It doesn't have the same affect as 'London's Calling', 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles' or 'You'll never walk alone'.... Choose something that gets the crowd up for it!
