Blues Chasing Preston Defender
Sunday, 12th Jan 2020 10:57

Town, Rotherham and the Chicago Fire are reportedly in a battle to sign Preston defender Josh Earl.

According to The Sun on Sunday, the Blues, Millers and Fire are all after the 21-year-old, who recently ended a spell on loan at Bolton.

TWTD understands there is something in the reported Town interest with the Blues discussing a loan deal.

Southport-born Earl came through the youth system at Preston, where he is contracted to 2021, and has made 31 senior starts and six sub appearances for the Lilywhites without scoring.

Earl, who had a spell on loan in non-league with Lancaster City in 2017, joined Bolton on loan in the summer but picked up an ankle injury on the opening day which sidelined him until November.

In total 6ft 4in tall Earl made 10 starts and one sub appearance for the Trotters, initially playing at left-back before latterly moving to centre-half. Bolton manager Keith Hill opted not to renew his loan last week.

It’s well documented that Town are looking to sign another central defender on loan following Toto Nsiala’s loan to, coincidentally, Bolton on Friday and Earl would appear to be top of the Blues' wish list.

Can we really not do any better than someone who can't even get in Bolton's team regularly and goes on loan to non league club ??

Lancaster City? Not good enough for the championship (where we aim to be next season? ) Sign him up! He's cheap and will make it look like ME could still give one...

That barrel must have a hole in the bottom of it by now! Although on the flip side, if we're being linked with bargain basement buys then it might mean we're looking (or hoping!) to try and keep hold of Downes and Wolfenden, as Lambert has made it crystal clear there's no extra money being made available from Ebenezer Evans to buy anybody of any real significance or quality, unless we sell that is. Personally I'd rather we hang on to Downes and Wolfenden and stick with what we have. Got a bad feeling we might lose one of them but fingers crossed we can see the window out with out any major departures. Also, if a Premier League club such as West Ham were to come calling for Downes and offered to quadruple his wages overnight, he might simply ask to go and then we aren't left with much choice! But at the very least I would want us to drive a very hard bargain and not sell well below the market value like we did Cresswell. The question then is, how much of the money would Lambert be given to fill the massive void of a Downes or Wolfenden leaving?

Luke Woolfenden joined Bromley on loan in 2017 and he's turned out alright.

@ CokeIsKey, yes a few can beat the odds, think Vardy and Mings etc. But for every Vardy and Mings there are string of others that come up short. It's a bit like backing a horse at 25/1, sometimes they cause an upset, but they are an outsider for a reason. But when you get one that works out well like Mings then it feels fantastic. But obviously we can't expect to hit the bullseye like that too often and if we're pinning our future hopes on outsiders beating the odds then I fear that's a recipe for disaster unless we get extremely lucky. But if you keep backing outsiders we should expect some really long losing runs (as luck always runs out), which you could argue we've had for the last 12 years under Evans already. If you want to compete or beat your rivals your need to match their level of ambition. Arsenal took their foot off the gas in terms of transfer spending and now look where they are compared to Liverpool and Man City. We took our feet off the gas as well and look where we are, our lowest in about 2 generations!

So Bolton didn't want to keep Earl, preferring Nsiala!? I doubt Earl is of the standard for us therefore.

I really don't understand why we would want to bring in inexperienced players on loan - all we are doing is developing other clubs players. We simply aren't learning.

Dont know why people have focussed on Lancaster loan in 2017. If we sign him i'll give him a chance. He's played at champ level. Maybe we're looking at him with a view to potentially buying and he fits the age group to develop. lots of ifs and buts we dont know. With comment about Bolton taking Nsiala instead then maybe he's cheaper and they need to wheel and deal. We just don't know.

Everything wrong with our fan base is comments like 'Ebenezer Evans'. He pumps millions in a year at a loss and people make comments like that. How many millions are you prepared to throw away on a football club?

I thought Mr Lambert was not a fan of loan players, has h is head been turned by Mr Evans giving him a new contract .

I don't have a problem with the player, at least this one has some senior game time. But it's amazing that despite the noise from the club we always seem to be after short term loans of players we are unlikely to keep on permanently.

Nutkins: I simply don't care how much he puts in. Look at where we've gone while he's been in charge. Stop burying your head in the sand.

The bottom line is that the team has gone backwards, the club feels stale, and the ground looks shabby.

Give him a chance. What were the comments when we signed Tyrone Mings ?

Bluearmy_81 added 13:26 - Jan 12
Terry Nutkins, no you are everything that's wrong with some Town fans. We have become a joke club, unbridled joy beating Accrington at home, lowliest position in 63 years and still some like you apologise for and back the cause. Just sickening...

Bluearmy_81 added 13:28 - Jan 12
Well said Durham. No one made him buy town. When he did he took on a duty of care if you will, to the club and the fans. He has failed both miserably. As a fan of ITFC that's all that should matter to you.

And of course the comments of PR Paul leaves anyone who questions how the club is run, the motivations of the owner, the ability of the manager and the performances on the field as someone who 'wants us to fail'. In fact, its just the opposite, people who see the situation clearly desperately want the club to succeed and won't just follow blindly. It's the classic tactic of those who wish to isolate and destroy any dissent.

Very few players who have played at non league level turn into Tyrone Ming's .This guy has had his injury problems can't offord any more lame ducks. The player we should looking at is the Accrington Stanley left back Opoku looks very strong fast has good skill perhaps we could tempt them with a cash plus Donasien deal.

Now I am usually a fairly negative poster.

And apologies for that, but I am now a fan of a team playing in the 3rd tier.

I am usually critical of the players we target, or allegedly target ( a 29 year old from Fleetwood being one example )

But this lad is 21 years old, 6'4" and has played at championship level, which I might remind you all, we are not.

Perhaps P.L, having won sooooo much at top clubs ( apologies for the sarcasm ) has seen a player with some potential.

As a previous poster said, should this be a loan that works out with a view to a permanent loan why not?

Our defence could certainly make use of a big man.

Surely worth a punt?

And Bluearmy_81, like you, I feel the pain but we are where we are, whoever we choose to blame.

But in the current situation, this young man seems like a viable option.

And may I add, a convincing win yesterday, despite the quality of the opposition that we faced.

Every poster on here, I am sure, wants our club to win games and get away from the poor standard of football that this league has proved to be.

Durhamtownfan, you'd most certainly care how much Evan's puts into the club if that figure were £0. Theres a huge difference between being realistic and "burying your head in the sand".

What are we trying to do?
Does Evans even want to get out of this division.
Why are we always Pi$$ing about with other clubs youngsters?
Lambert you won't get out of this league playing tippy tappy with a team of youngsters and 3 over the hill 35 year olds.
Get a plan, get the players for that plan and start grinding out the results. I don't think we can afford talented players so we must find another way. Developing other clubs youngsters is a waste of time.
Evans you haven't got any ambition or a clue how to run a football club. There is something wrong at the heart of ITFC

Nutkins:Have you been brainwashed by Evans? He is worth much more than he was when he came in here. Yet as a club all we have done is gone backwards.

Meant to mark you up Bettyblue.. apologies... nice to see some are not fooled by Evans spin! The man is poison! Ruined our football club and his wealth has risen.. how he's still applauded by many is a joke! We don't want the club to fail.. totally thee opposite.. I care so much about this football club and it's painful how low we have fallen under the crook! Hopefully yesterday has installed some much needed confidence and we can go on a run! Big 6 weeks ahead! COYB

R2d2, it's fascinating isn't it!? Even when time and time again what Evans says and what happens doesn't add up, some fans still believe and trust him. Beggars belief. I've noticed fans up north are a lot more 'critical' in the sense they don't blindly believe what owners say, if it's not backed up they will soon call them out. It seems many town fans are a lot more trusting, some might say gullible.

My comment about Ebenezer Evans is actually too generous. That is because Scrooge is a character who hated spending money but learned how to be generous.
