Bishop: We Didn't Deserve to Lose on Second-Half Display
Sunday, 5th Jan 2020 15:53

Midfielder Teddy Bishop felt Town’s second-half performance at Exeter deserved better than the 2-1 defeat courtesy of ex-Blue Lee Martin’s injury-time goal which saw his side exit the Leasing.com Trophy at the third round stage.

The 23-year-old, who was making his first start of the season, admits Town are in need of a victory when Accrington Stanley visit next weekend to end a run of 12 games without a win over 90 minutes, with five of the last seven having ended in defeat.

“I thought on our second-half performance we definitely didn’t deserve to lose, definitely not,” he said. “To lose it with that goal at the end there, it’s gutting really.

“We missed a few chances but I think that’s been the story of the last couple of months, we need to get back to being clinical like we were at the start of the season and start winning games again.”

Bishop admitted it was a chance to reach a Wembley final missed with the Blues one of only 10 current EFL clubs not to have played at the new stadium.

“The manager said right from the start that we want to go to Wembley, we want to win this competition,” he said.

“We felt like it was a really good opportunity and we’ve showed in the teams that we’ve played. It is very disappointing but now we have to concentrate on the league.”

Not all fans are disappointed to see the Blues out of the competition but Bishop says the players certainly don’t feel that way.

“Definitely not, we want to win every game we play in,” he insisted. “We wanted to win today and we wanted to win this competition.

“It is flat [in the dressing room] but there are characters in there that will pick it up, we’ll have a good week’s training and we’ll go again at the weekend.”

Bishop admits that the Blues are very much in need of a victory when Accrington Stanley visit Portman Road next Saturday.

“We do need a win,” he said. “I thought the performance at Wycombe was better than it had been before and we were unlucky not to get the win. We’ll go out on Saturday and try and get the three points, like we always do.”

He says promotion remains the target, despite the recent run which has seen the Blues drop to fourth.

“The aim is to win the league, it hasn’t changed, and we can still do that," he insisted. "We’ve got the squad to do that, so that’s our aim.”

Sorry Teddy, I am a massive fan of you but if we are wasteful with chances and then let the opposition score two scrappy goals not picking up the opposition forwards then we definitely deserved to loose.

That's a hard fact, the sooner the players realise this and take responsibility for the result then the team will develop an excuse mentality.

One thing we don't lack at the Club is - talkers - far less of that, and more action in the way of results would be much better received.

Stay healthy, Bish. By the way, I believe we're in fifth, not fourth.

Great to see Teddy back - quality player.

But this spin which is currently coming out of the club is remarkable. The vast majority of fans know we are on a terrible run. Yesterday's result was unacceptable and poor. As all football fans know a match is over two halves. Not just a second half. You need to perform well throughout. The team who scores more goals wins and deserves to win as they conceded fewer and scored more.

Teddy gives honest assessment.

News feed football experts have spoken though so he's clearly wrong. Deserving to win and winning are two different things and yes they do happen. Pipe down armchair fans. We're having a useless run of results and everyone is sick of it. We did deserve something from that game clearly but we didnt get it. Teddy stating it isn't ' spin' its just his opinion. Result stinks but why make everything toxic. so helpful!

So right Nutkin ; but we do need more bite in both boxes – and we stand around watching instead of being active both on defensive duty ,and in the opposition box !
It asks the question whether our Asst Mgr and First Team Coach has enough about him to drive the improvement needed : or do we simply have slow thinkers who need replacing ??
Goals win games ,and we often look powder puff ,lacking power and absolute commitment ,
But we must believe !

I agree we do need to be more clinical suffolkboy. It's not happening for.us right now. I said just before they scored we're well on top. We just need someone to deflect one in off their arse. Some luck or magic I don't care. Confidence does a he'll of a lot! Slating a truthful opinion helps nobody. newsfeed posts are always full of rubbish.

Trouble with Football for some is the scoring system. Let's stop counting goals and why not have a panel of judges sitting in a box and holding up cards marking the overall performance, then teams would get what they deserve? Or better still let's get management to get a team that can score more goals at the right end than they concede at the wrong end. Not much to ask is it?

No excuses Exeter were playing with 8 reserves you can't say that about us because we don't know what our strongest team is .If we keep playing like this they'll be more fans sitting in armchairs next season.

It is great to see Bishop back, hopefully for the long term. But, honestly?? I think it has become too easy at Town. Oh well we lost but deserved to win is not the mentality to have. How many of our current players can honestly say that they go on that pitch prepared to give everything. We desperately need a Tony Mowbray or Jim Magilton who showed leadership and commitment to the shirt. This post is not a dig at Bishop but at the whole team and management.

Goals win games. Not the odd one or two here and there.

Teddy, it was Exeter reserves for goodness sake. The situation is bad, but quickly remedied with addition of a couple of players (you/Sears maybe) and a more honest attitude that we simply not good enough.....not unlucky or deserving better.

PS: not sure i do agree with a settled side, as who amongst the teams we have put out has made the short his own? Woolfy, Garbutt and Downes maybe ? KVY when fit ?

Not even half the team is made up of people who have justified the shirt which is a clear sign of lack of leaders and leadership. How about bringing back Tommy Smith, give him the armband, and let's see what he puts up with? Let's be honest, all we really need is a team of Tommy Smiths!

I do not care if any one thinks we deserved to win, you only win by getting the job done and scoring more than the other team.

I look at our squad and I can not fathom how we are not doing better than we are, we had an edge about us at the start of the season and got right to the top, and maintained it for a time. There is no excuse for how we are now playing, rotation policy or not.

I mean no disrespect to other teams in this league, and nothing is won on paper but that group of players is so much more capable than what is currently being shown.

This isn't also a new thing, but how long has it been where we have one good half and one either bad or average, and also when we concede we start playing and attacking with more intent! Im sorry I want that drive and passion from the first whistle and I will not settle for less because we are a good team and have some good players, so pull your bloody socks up and stop feeling sorry for yourselves because you feel like you should have won rather than actually winning.

My issue at the moment is it feels like we are reverting to type like last season, and I don't blame rotation policy for this. I agree maybe rotation has gone on a bit too long but the long game plan was a solid one, have most if not all your squad match fit and we can then handle injuries etc.

I honestly think there is more going on behind the scenes than any one knows about, how do you go from how we were playing at the start of the season to this?! Your not telling me its because Norwood and Vincent young needed to be out for ops because if a team cant handle that situation regardless of the influence they bring to the team then we are more powder puff then I ever suspected.

I love this club and always will, I will stick with it through good and bad, but this we deserved more has to stop, go for it from the first whistle and accept nothing other than success, don't wait until we are already behind. Stand up and be bloody counted, so some passion and desire and play to your ability, we deserve nothing, we earn everything.
