Bristol Rovers or Plymouth Away Await Blues or Coventry
Monday, 2nd Dec 2019 19:20

Town will face Bristol Rovers or Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Cup if they beat Coventry City at Portman Road in next week's second-round replay.

Like the Blues and the Sky Blues, the League One Pirates and League Two the Pilgrims drew 1-1 in their second-round tie at the weekend and face a replay at Home Park next week.

Town have been paired with Bristol Rovers on four occasions in the FA Cup, most famously in the fifth round in 1978 on their way to their one and only Wembley triumph.

After a controversial in-the-snow 2-2 draw at the Eastville Stadium, the Blues won 3-0 at Portman Road.

A year later, the teams met at the same stage when Town won 6-1 at home.

The Blues were the 2-1 victors in a third round tie at Eastville in 1985, then the teams met again in 1998.

After a 1-1 draw at a freezing Memorial Ground, Town won 1-0 at Portman Road.

More recently the teams met in a League Cup tie in Suffolk in 2012 which the Blues won 3-1.

Town's only previous FA Cup tie against Plymouth was a third-round tie in 1993 which the Blues won 3-1.

Third round ties will take place over the weekend of January 4th. Town’s scheduled league game for that day is already set to be postponed as Fleetwood, who were due to visit Portman Road that afternoon, are through to round three in which they will host Portsmouth.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse than being sent to Coventry!

You get what you deserve, and with Towns dreadful attitude towards the Cup the last few seasons, they dont deserve a better draw.

Struggling to detect any great incentive to beat the might Coventry......other than, long trips notwithstanding, might be a glimmer of a 4th round appearance against one of the big boys - quite a few who are likely to exit at 3rd round stage! COYB onwards to Bristol or Plymouth😊

I am kind of happy with this, that is if we beat Coventry. Bristol Rovers fans are usually a good bunch and some lovely pubs nearby. Plymouth are also not playing to bad a game of footie these days.

Fair play WKJ, bit of positivity. If we are going to persist with the cup (which....given the fact we put out a stronger side against Cov...we are doing) then its a good opportunity to get to the 4th round. All ifs and buts.......but how often have we got that far in the last 10 year!?

Not a tie that PL will get excited about, so team 2 again against Coventry in replay.

Doubt PL will take the Coventry replay seriously! Let alone this!

For me though, it's a great opportunity to reach the fourth round of the cup.

Not a draw to get the heart racing, and I'm sure the fans of all 4 clubs potentially involved in this tie are saying the same thing!

People have been wining we haven't had a show in the FA Cup. You can't pick and choose who you prefer to play. Let's just get on with it!

Why all the negativity?
Great chance to progress to the fourth round for the first time in 16 years!

We have winning tradition in the cup against Bristol Rovers, I particularly remember the 2-2 at Eastville (in the snow/orange ball), stuffed em in the replay!! Personally, I'm looking forward to it (I'm only 20 miles from Bristol), assuming we beat Cov & Rovers win their replay.

Didn't we beat Bristol Rovers on the way to winning the Cup in ‘78!

I would rather we beat Coventry this coming Saturday for the 3pts.

I really hope we get through to the 3rd Round. The game won't be moved from Saturday 3pm. I would prefer Plymouth as they have a better ground. Was there in December 1991 for the League game, and at the Memorial for the FA Cup in 1998. Trains are usually OK on first Saturday of the New Year, not that many people travelling, whereas Boxing Day....

An early start and freezing but there's something special about the 3rd Round, coming as it does at the end of the Christmas holiday period. Hope we get past Coventry.
