Blues Among Clubs Linked With Northampton Keeper
Monday, 2nd Dec 2019 14:40

The Blues, Middlesbrough and Preston North End are all reportedly keen on Northampton Town keeper David Cornell.

According to Football Insider, Cornell’s displays for the Cobblers this season have led to the Blues, Boro and Lilywhites watching him in action this season.

The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season so could be available at a cut-price fee in January or on a free in the summer.

Born in Waunarlwydd in Wales, Cornell started his career at Swansea during which time he had spells on loan at Port Talbot, Hereford, St Mirren and Portsmouth before moving on to Oldham in the summer of July 2015 having made only one League Cup appearance for the Swans.

In June 2016 he joined Northampton and has made 89 starts and one sub appearance for League Two’s sixth-placed side.

Cornell, who is 6ft 2in tall and could be set for a first Wales call-up having won caps at U17, U19 and U21 levels, has conceded only 16 goals in 17 games this season.

While Town currently don’t look in need of another goalkeeper, manager Paul Lambert revealed on Friday that Will Norris could be recalled from his season-long loan by parent club Wolves in January.

If that were to be the case then the Blues would look to add another keeper to their ranks for the second half of the campaign.

Lambert also said he hadn’t thought about whether to recall Bartosz Bialkowski from his spell at Millwall. However, if the Polish international is brought back from the Lions it seems more likely it would be so he could be sold rather than to go back into the Town squad.

Norris has turned out to have been a mostly wasted loan - not due to any fault of his own. Holy has turned out to be pretty good!

I think he'll go back to Wolves and will be loaned elsewhere.

I don't care how much ability you have, 5ft 11 just isn't tall enough. Huge issue from crosses. It's a no from me.

@TerryNutkins

How tall was Paul Cooper?

5' 11” well that's a lot taller than Laurie Sivell was, and he caught more crosses then most goalkeepers today have had hot dinners.

If anyone wants to know how to pronounce his place of birth..!

I lived in Swansea and actually played football there once. It's ‘one eyelid': kid you not

Useless fact of the day

Paul Cooper is before my time so can't use him as a reference myself. I'm sorry though but it is massive disadvantage and you can't be top drawer. It's just too big a disadvantage. Murphy here was clearly a talented keeper but i can remember several times his height cost us. not least a ridiculous lob. You very rarely get small keepers anymore and for good reason. Lad i'm sure is talented but I wouldnt go small keeper. We're already a bit on the short side with CBs which is ok When Holy takes everything out the air.

Nah, Paul Cooper wasn't short - he was also 5'11.

He also had an incredible ability. His penalty saving record was phenomenal - he used to really lean one way, goading the striker to put the ball in the opposite side and would save it. One season, he saved 5 out of 7 penalties he faced, the next 8 out of 10.

I agree that probably, anything under 5'9" would be a challenge, but research on the other side's strikers, positioning and confidence will take a keeper a long, long way.
