Lambert: The Crap That's Been Written Has Been Unbelievable
Friday, 22nd Nov 2019 12:00

Boss Paul Lambert was pleased that Town’s FA Cup win at Lincoln on Wednesday finally laid to rest the ghost of the Blues’ woeful record in the competition but again hit back at some of the comment on his rotation policy.

Following the win at Sincil Bank, Lambert had strong words for those that had criticised his team selection with most of those who have played regularly in League One this season rested.

“Do you know what, I kept on hearing the club hadn’t won for 10 years and I think that it must have been my fault because the crap that has been written has been unbelievable,” he said.

“And I think that’s important to say that. We’ve only been here for over a year, the Accrington game last year was not good.

“We get through a tie against Lincoln, who are a good side, they’ve had momentum, so it was a tough game.

“We changed the team, guys that needed games because of the situation with injuries, young kids getting thrown which is great and to get through was brilliant. If it lays a ghost then maybe the next manager that comes in here can get that label.”

The Blues have now gone through to the second rounds of both the FA Cup and Leasing.com Trophy. Does Lambert believe his squad, second in League One at present behind leaders Wycombe by three points but with two games in hand, is capable of competing on all three fronts?

“We’re a squad that’s developing still,” he reflected. “We’re nowhere near where I want to be. There’s a lot of young lads in the team, one or two experienced guys in the team.

“We bought one player in Kane [Vincent-Young], some lads have come in on frees and some lads have come in on loans, we can’t go out and buy players for millions.

“We’re a long way off where we want to get. It’s a team that’s still developing. It’s a club that’s developing into something that hopefully will be really really good.

“It’s just small steps for us at the minute. But what we’ve done in the last year has come a helluva long way from the negativity and apathy that were here, it’s come a helluva long way.

“I think that’s a testament to the club itself for grasping the community — which I think is important — the young guys coming through, me giving them a chance to go let’s see what you’ve got to go and do.

“The days of Ipswich Town being what they were in the 80s, that’s tough, those lads set an incredible standard, even in Matty Holland’s era, an incredible standard they set in George Burley’s time here.

“That isn’t Ipswich now, but what we’re doing is trying to get it back somewhere near there and to give it the same feeling and to get the crowd to come back, which is important.”

I suppose 'helluva' has probably made it into the dictionary now, partly thanks to Paul.....

“We get through a tie against Lincoln, who are a good side, they've had momentum, so it was a tough game". - not sure about that, momentum from what?, certainly not from the league or recent form as that haven't proved they're that good and I'm not sure those players coming in on Wednesday were largely due to injuries (just look at what Paul says in another thread about senior players all fit and ready to go for tomorrow).
My own opinion thinks we were lucky to go through after their penalty miss in the 1st tie and Holy pulling off some good saves on Wednesday night.

And there you have it kids, bosses dont like critisism. Nod along sweetly and we'll all get along swimmingly. Big month this, some very important games. Feel that the relationship between manager and fans could be very different come Christmas. Let's hope we all have that cheery festive spirit.

Well we will see over these next 2 important league matches which side has called it correct. If we get wins with energised players and stay at the top, fair play Mr Lambert. If however we lose ground after poor displays by players who haven't played for a while, then there may be a few points Mr Lambert may have to accept.
At least these matches may close the debate!

I'm always curious to know what it is about Lambert's delivery that makes Phil transcribe it as "helluva" rather than "hell of a".

Don't get me wrong and I know a press conference is all about questions and answers but why o why is PL asked the same old dull questions over and over. He shouldn't have to explain some of his reasons for squad rotation it's common sense. We haven't got a fantastic all singing team but what we do have is a great squad bond. FFS just let him manage and pick what he thinks is his best team for each game.
The club is s heading back to a position that we have all been crying out for for yes. So called supporters are so quick to moan and grown and yes we all pay good money to watch football but leave the critasisim until the end of the season. The support is coming back both home and away and as Paul says we are no where near where he want the club to be but it's getting there. Promotion has got to come first and yes if we win a few cup games going along fantastic.
Unfortunately short memory's of where we were are being forgotten.
Remember positivity will always overcome negativity.

When we are winning games at a canter in March and April, and Wycombe and Coventry are knackered, injured and suspended because their 'first 11' have played week in and week out for 7 months, that's when we will see the benefit of the rotation policy, not now

So, if we lose against Wycombe next week, don't come on here and post that the rotation policy is wrong. It's not about next week, it's about next year

I am right behind PL on this one, and if we go out of cup competitons early beacuse of it, then so be it. As long as we go up, Lambert is beyond reproach in my book

Well said CraigEdwards. Far too many 'Football managers' amongst our supporters. Keep up the good work Mr Lambert you're doing a fantastic job both on and off the pitch.
Moaners will always moan.

Just been sent a whattsapp message from a mate saying on this day in 2001 we were watching Ipswich beat Inter Milan 1-0 at Portman road before heading to the San Siro.

What a trip!

I'm not trying to make any point.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Sunderland are a prime example too many games and they ran out of steam losing twice at wembley. If the rotation keep fresh legs and less injuries then that has to be a positive. Players will gel over the season making us strong as we head into the last quarter of the season.

Bang on.

There'll be ups and downs but everything you're doing shows me you're building this long term.

And as a fan i'm grateful. It's exciting! Keep going Lambo, behind you all the way!

I think PL & several on here have their wires crossed the questions being raised regarding resting players is more to do with thier league form not FA cup.
Obviously It's good that there are plans for the future but risking dropping points now can still determin whether we go up or not, not having a settled match ready side is the elephant in the room.

Let's trust PL quickly gets over this bout of frustration ,it's not been his habit at all ; and I'd rather it didn't become so !
Good to read so many ‘positives ‘ in previous commentaries ; on balance we are doing fine and it's the long game that will pay dividends !
Hearts and minds positively behind the current ITFC drive , support and understanding ,belief and appreciation ; leave ‘negativity ‘ right out of the equation !

-3 votes on my post!...not saying I'm correct but it's fairly realistic, did he make a rotation in the starting 11 due to injuries? NO, did Lincoln have the 'momentum as Paul suggests? NO and were we rather lucky to get through to the 2nd round (particularly after the 1st tie? largely YES.

So why post me down?...heads buried in the sand?
