Keane Reignites Walters Spat
Thursday, 5th Sep 2019 13:55

Former Blues boss Roy Keane has reignited his long-running spat with his ex-Town skipper Jon Walters.

The pair famously fell out and almost came to blows during their time together at Portman Road in 2010, the former Manchester United man having accused Walters of trying to engineer a move away from the Blues. He stripped Walters of the captaincy and left him out of the side before the striker was eventually sold to Stoke City.

The duo were eventually reunited when Keane was appointed assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland but with relations remaining strained, a Whatsapp voice message outlining the details of a row involving them and Harry Arter having been leaked in September last year.

Speaking at the Cadbury's Off The Ball roadshow in Dublin, Keane took aim at several players among them Walters, even making reference to the Birkenhead-born forward’s TV interview earlier this year in which he talked about his daughter’s scoliosis and the deaths of his mother when he was a child and more recently his older brother and unborn child.

"He talks a good game," Keane said of Walters. "Imagine if he'd won a trophy. He goes on the TV about how he was harshly treated by me. He's crying on the TV about his family situation.

“You know, how about lying low for a while, taking it easy. Have a look at his medals? Wouldn’t take long.

“Ironically two or three years ago when his career was coming to the end, he went on loan, he went to Ipswich on loan. I was laughing my head off.

"We got beaten by Wales. Jon played. Jon didn't have a good game. Wardy played, he didn't have a good game. They need to go back see how bad they were.”

Ireland lost that match 4-1 to Wales in Cardiff in the UEFA Nations League and it turned out to be Walters’s final international before he retired in March due to injury.

Keane was reminded that Walters scored a decent number of goals, 14, in his 54 games for Ireland but said: "How many years ago is that? How long is he going to live off that? A certain player [Jason McAteer] scored against Holland and he still is.”

Walters, who spent a brief spell back at Portman Road on loan from Burnley last season before succumbing to injury, responded to Keane’s latest comments via a Twitter selfie.

No Keanes right. Setting out to deliberately break players leg. Now that's something to be proud off.....

No wait. Those are the actions of an egotistical mad man who walked out on his country. What a classless jumped up Pratt of a man.

Some of the blows in that are lower than the stamp that took Alfie Inge Hall and out

What a bitter twisted man.Club less and I doubt friendless.Nothing better to do than insult other professionals. I'm sorry to say you were a disgrace when playing.Nothing more to add other then you are never welcome at Portman Road.

Isn't it strange that Mr Keane says that Walters talks a good game. Keane has spent his career doing a lot of talking. Big Eric at Utd talked a good game, but he could back it up. Maybe just maybe after the success that Mr Keane has had as a manager as the sense he talks whilst doing the media stuff he may want to lay low a while himself and be quite. His not selling himself particularly well!!

Lets remind ourselves....this was possibly the worst Manager in our history....bizarre Team selections and tactics. Bloody awful Man Management....wanted to change our strip from blue to red and oh yes...sold Jordan Rhodes to Huddesfield for peanuts.

He may have been a decent player but as a Football Manager and it appears human being he leaves alot to be be desired.

It's no coincidence I stopped going to PR the moment JM was sacked and this helmet was installed.
I'll never forgive ME for that appointment.

Go and ask MM if he has a job going spare after all you and Mick were both good buddies. I bet JW was never send home from a world cup but you were and guess what Ireland did really well without you there. Shame you don't mention that very often

Keane cannot avoid having an indirect dig at our club and the likes of Jon Walters who behaved very well for us and did us proud.
That is what hurts Keane because he did not do us proud and he does not like to see others do well.
Both Keane and McCarthy ultimately failed with us which hurts them both. This is why they try to have a chip at people like Jon Walters who is held in such a good light here.
Both Keane and McCarthy are has beens and should just act with dignity. They are probably both very jealous of the wonderful impact Paul Lambert has had too.

Isn't it a pity that some of our ex managers (I'm thinking Keane and McCarthy here) don't have the class of other ex managers such as a certain Mr Robson.

For someone who achieved so much as a player, he hasn't progressed as a human being any further than the young thug who behaved like a thug whilst at Forest as a player. Have a kebab Roy

He probably revels in the hard man psychopath image, but it won't get him another job in management.
