Rochdale Game Set for Postponement as Georgiou and Dobra Called Up
Thursday, 22nd Aug 2019 16:34

Town’s game at Rochdale on Saturday 7th September appears set to be postponed with new loanee Anthony Georgiou having been named in the Cyprus squad and Armando Dobra in the Albanian U19s.

League One clubs are able to to request the postponement of matches if they have three players receive international calls with younger levels, such as Albania's U19s, qualifying if the player involved has featured in 25 per cent of a side’s first-team matchday squads that season as Dobra has.

In addition to Dobra and Georgiou, Alan Judge was named in a provisional Republic of Ireland squad last week, while Idris El Mizouni is expected to be picked for the Tunisia U23s squad facing Cameroon in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Andre Dozzell and Flynn Downes could also be named in the England U20s squad, for whom they remain eligible.

Young keeper Adam Przybek, who has yet to be involved with the senior side, has already been called into the Wales U21s.

If the total of first-team calls hits three, as it is expected to with the final Ireland party and England U20 squad set to be named later this week, then we understand Town boss Paul Lambert will opt to postpone the trip to Spotland.

Georgiou’s Cyprus face Kazakhstan in Nicosia on Friday 6th September and away against San Marino in Serraville three days later in Euro 2020 qualifiers, while Dobra’s Albania U19s have two friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday 7th and Monday 9th September.

Surely we have a side good enough to put out even if a few squad players are missing due to international call up.🤔

Martin587, just think about the battering Lambert would get if we played with a weakened side and lost! We should have enough but you could have a couple of players out with knocks etc...

Ultimate members have already received Rochdale tickets yesterday along with Bolton tickets. Seems a bit daft as this fixture was always likely to be postponed. Still pleased with this tho as it means I can go to the England game at Wembley.

martin587 according to the article, the list of players missing could be Georgiou, Dobra, Judge, El Mizouni, Dozzell, Downes... considering the only one on that list who didn't feature on Saturday was Dobra, I think it's a sensible move to postpone. Sucks for Westy though.

I fear the same at Oxford in November and I'm really looking forward to that away day 😔 but why should we play when we can't put out our strongest 11.. a sensible decision in my opinion but fans must be informed earlier to prevent what's happened to westy!

Westy, I reckon you should use your train ticket and see it as a mini break. I went to Rochdale a couple of months ago and there's loads to do - a small museum, a grand Town Hall, some gardens, and um, um, ummm...actually, maybe see if you can get a refund?

That's perfect, will give the team a rest, recharge batteries for the future. Anytime you can get a freebie postponement and control the practice and travel schedules for the core squad you should take it.

ITFC in the first division still has international players, a good thing surely.

And there was me thinking the only advantage of being in this division was no international breaks....

Let's just wish them well and hope they don't get injured

PL is already concerned about the number of fixtures this season and, presumably, also about fixture congestion later in the season.

Don't forget there are international weekends in October, November and March as well as September. Goodness knows how many games we will need to play later in season to catch up if we call them all off (especially if, by some miracle, we win a cup match or two)
