Sections of Ground Closed for Leasing.com Trophy Tie
Thursday, 22nd Aug 2019 12:37

Town are selling tickets in limited areas of Portman Road for the Leasing.com Trophy tie against Tottenham’s U21s on Tuesday 3rd September (KO 7.45pm).

Seats are only on sale - from Planet Blue and ITFC Direct - in the lower tier of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand and the two lower tiers of the East of England Co-op Stand with further sections made available if required.

Crowds have been very low across the board for the Leasing.com Trophy, previously the Checkatrade Trophy, particularly those games featuring U21 sides.

Following the club's first-ever match in the competition against the Spurs youngsters, the Blues will host Gillingham on Tuesday 8th October (KO 7.45pm) and will travel to face Colchester United at the JobServe Community Stadium on Tuesday 12th November (KO 7.30pm).

The club has confirmed that prices for the two Portman Road matches will be £10 for adults, £5 for 65+ and under-23s and £1 for under-19s.

Town have previously closed sections of the ground for games in other cup competitions, most recently the FA Cup third round tie against Sheffield United in January 2018.

I think Premier League sides will want their U21 sides in League One/Two one day and this could be the start of that road. It is not a road I will be going down, and I will not be attending.

So you won't be supporting the team then Mark?

I have sneaky feeling that you and a few others would turn up at Wembley if we were to get that far.

Each to there own though.

Crowds have been down because fans have boycotted the games because of premier league u21s teams being involved in the cup..

So? We don't make the rules, Evans doesn't make the rules, we are the ones who have been relegated and put into this cup.

Most importantly the players don't make the rules, how ridculous to think Ipswich Town first team could be supported by 5,000 fans. Fecking embarrassing, we follow our team.

EFLT attendances have grown a bit since U21s entered. Still very low though. It counts as a first team game so I'll be there.

@Mark. Absolutely - this was introduced as a sop to the money clubs as that's exactly what they were pushing for. Hence the boycott which has been ongoing and pretty successful as far as I can see (to the extent they've stopped publishing attendances after the huge joke the first year). But if they start getting the attendances then you can bet we'll have U21 sides in League One (maybe even Championship) asap. We should stick with other clubs in the boycott.

Why do these big brands have to spoil even the cup that was specifically designed for smaller clubs to have a realistic chance of winning something?!

Btw - for those interested in the boycott here's a twitter link:

Anyone who understands the politics of football will not attend in protest

Empty as possible sends a message

@lindhi - btw that's not true. Attendances have generally been falling precipitously compared to pre-b-team matches. It's just been slightly disguised by the fact Sunderland are by far the biggest club to be in League One for years and they got to the final last year (plus Lincoln's trip to Wembley in 2018 was their first ever so better attended than expected). This article is an interesting analysis: https://offsiderulepodcast.com/2019/04/02/is-efl-trophy-format-working/

I'm really hoping this year's final is between two U21 teams with a fractional attendance whilst their A-teams have a regular league game. That would really show it up for the sham it is! It's made a good start towards it anyway with the 3 games so far this season (played in the first week of the season at the big club's request no doubt) all having been won by the B-teams!

Mr Town,,, What makes you think Lambert will put out his first team? My guess it will be fringe players and players coming back from injury that need minutes on the pitch.

As a League One side I have no problem whatsoever with playing League One / League Two sides in this competition.
I have a massive problem with playing U21 Premier League sides and anyone who cares about lower league football in this country will be boycotting this fixture.

Leasing, Checkatrade....whatever it's referred to.
I know it as the tin pot cup.
Norwich will love seeing us go far in this.
Sunderland and Pompey regret participating, as both would be Championship clubs if they hadn't.
Can't see to many Town supporters of a certain age going to any games even the final.
Prefer to keep the memories of the FA cup and UAFA cup finals. Not the tin pot cup final.

It's not about not supporting your team it's a protest against the premier league trying to take over english football. They are poaching away all the young players from clubs offering them stupid wages.. They will next want there B side playing in Div 2 or 1 at the cost of a what a football club losing its league status..

It should be seen as a more competitive part of the U23's schedule and I suspect that's how lambert will see it, plus getting game time for those returning from injury. These boys will also get to play in front of bigger crowds, even if it's 2-3,000 which is good for their development. I don't care if we progress beyond the group stages, but if we do then it's more experience for the young pros and better scholars.

Just wondering.....

If we were to win it, would our shirt have four stars on it?????
2

Fatboy added 15:44 - Aug 22
One problem with progressing in this competition would be the prospect of coming up against the budgies' U21 side.

This is one cup competition I hope we get knocked out of asap. If we get any long term injuries out of this, it will potentially ruin our promotion chances. Treat it like a beer match....turn up, don't do any hard tackles, get knocked out at the first opportunity, and get back to what is important. COYB

2858 in 1939 was town's lowest attendance.

Will that record be broken at some point in this competition?

ITFCsince73 added 18:00 - Aug 22
No Mark. The 3 stars are for, being champions of England. Winning the major cup competition of England the FA cup. And winning a major European competition the UEFA cup.
No stars for winning L1, and certainly not for winning the Leasing.com trophy.

ITFCsince73 added 18:20 - Aug 22
Winning the Leasing.com trophy only brings embarrassment to the former English Champions, former English cup winners, and former European tournament winners.
We, being the only club to have won a major tournament who have ever entered this embarrassing cup for minnows.
