Tottenham Left Winger Georgiou Joins on Loan
Monday, 19th Aug 2019 15:38

Town have completed the signing of Tottenham left winger Anthony Georgiou on loan until January.

Georgiou, who will wear the number 38 shirt, trained with the Blues this morning and the paperwork is expected to be completed in time for him to be in the squad for Tuesday’s game against AFC Wimbledon.

Born in Lewisham of Greek-Cypriot descent, Georgiou came through the Spurs academy and has made one senior sub appearance for Tottenham, as a substitute in a Champions League tie coincidentally against Cypriot side APOEL in September 2017, in addition to being a regular in their U23s.

In addition to joining Town, Georgiou, who was at Saturday's game at Peterborough, has signed a new contract with Spurs, which runs to the summer of 2021.

The 22-year-old, who has won six caps for Cyprus and can also play at left-back, joined Spanish side Levante on loan in January and featured for their B team in the third tier of Spanish football, making 11 appearances and scoring one goal.

Town boss Paul Lambert, who has been looking for two more signings having completed the addition of right-back Kane Vincent-Young this morning, said early in the summer he wasn’t keen to sign too many loan players, however, he admitted last week that he could be forced to make additions of that type.

“You might have to short-term to get where you want to get to sometimes,” he said. “It’s not ideal, I’ve always said it’s not ideal.

“In my opinion, it’s not the right way to try and build your own team, but sometimes it’s dictated. It’s not an ideal scenario.”

Georgiou will provide extra competition on the Town left, potentially allowing Luke Garbutt, who is currently out for a month with a knee injury, to move to left-back to cover first-choice Myles Kenlock if required once he is fit.

Lambert would now appear to need only one more signing before the window closes on September 2nd with a big striker in the mould of Millwall's Tom Elliott - whose move broke down last month - the type of frontman he is after.

welcome & good luck. thought the 2 extra signings would be a centre back and centre forward though, hopefully more to come...

As Lambert states not ideal! Loans again! Will Evans spend anymore money? Good luck lad!

positivity - a centre back?! I think Wilson, Chambers, Woolfie, Toto and Donacien are adequate for this area! PL would find it VERY hard to justify getting another body in here!!

Hopefully he will be a good signing and add more quality and cover. Lets be realistic, clubs in league 1 and below are usually forced to wait until after premier and Championship transfer windows close to get their loans and transfers sorted. ME did well to get Norwood & Garbut signed up early and keep Judgy here. Our squad is looking in better shape then this time last year

Welcome lad, will bring much needed competition to Kenlock at LB. Spoke to a few spurs fans and they rate him! A Big powerful target man before the end of the week now por favor

Based on what I've seen, heard and read: he looks to be a bright prospect. Exciting player with skill, pace and a great workrate. Welcome aboard.

We are getting close to something useful as a team.
PL had said he was looking for 3 signings, we have two, I am not concerned this one is a loan, if it goes well then maybe he stays with us in the Championship , his contract is up in 2021

Never seen him play but he's made it to 22 years old and still a Tottenham player so he must have something about him.

Hopefully we can go and get a big target man in to do the donkey work so Norwood can focus on getting the goals now.

wallingford, i still think he needs another cb, don't think he trusts wilson or donacien and chambers' last dozen or so performances haven't given much confidence that he's going to be good enough to see the season out.

you're right in that we have other options out of position (skuse would be another), and, if we only get one, i'd agree that a centre forward would be the priority.

Blue Widdow, he is a left winger, not a left back!

Lambert said he was after 3 additional players before Garbutt got injured, so it may be the case that he is still after 2 more transfers that could be permanent signings. This one is clearly a short term replacement to cover the next month or two, whereas a centre forward & I'd argue a quality central defender to partner Woolfenden are more longterm aspirations.
Welcome Georgiou, I wish you well.

Interesting one, looks like he has a cross in him and is happy to run at defences, also looks a little more robust than dear old Gwion, for example.

Should again add a little more balance, could see Garbs moving to leftback when he returns?

Best of Luck, Anthony - we need a tenacious winning mentality!

C'mon folks, this is coming together nicely. He may be a loan, but that's a damn sight better than no-one in at all. In PL we trust. Welcome, Anthony! Just need a big centre forward now and then it's time to "just do it" and stop moaning. [The Bryan Klug connection? Probably! ITFC hero!]

Where the hell did this one come from! (No literal answers please)

Think we might have to do with what we have got at CB but in an ideal world we would look to sign a quality player for the position. I love Chambers but his best years are just about behind him ,Woofie is going to be a big player in years to come but as it stands we have quantity rather than quality. Lots og games to come .

Good loan signing till January. See where we are in the league then maybe start getting our own in to build for the Championship. Good luck Anthony. Support the team.

Is it also a cunning plan to get enough internationals to postpone now ?

From one Cypriot to another.....with same Christian name....welcome Antoni !

Might have to get one of the Cyprus flags like the one that is always in frame at Spurs stadium !

COYB....let's have some positivity...Edwards reckons there are more signings to come too.

I'll be honest I don't like loans, but having seen the first three games we need a bit more quality with some of our better players sidelined.

Didn't see this one coming, but looks good, well done Mr Lambert and Mr Evans. Just think we need that front man now and we will be going up!!

Forward needed desperately unless we are waiting for that guy from Milwall?

Good news week! Whilst all the questions are being asked the professionals at the club seem to be quietly going about their business!
