Trialist Wilson Set to Sign
Thursday, 1st Aug 2019 11:35

Town are set to complete the signing of former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson following his trial.

Football Insider has reported that a deal is close and TWTD understands that discussions are well advanced with the player set to undergo a medical today and the move likely to be confirmed either later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Wilson is understood to have been offered a short-term deal until January.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge.

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s impending signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Once the deal is confirmed, Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

My mate is a Lincoln fan and says this guy is awful... bloody hope he isn't right! What ever happened to the Tilt saga? We have received a fair bit off sell on fees, so why is NOTHING getting invested? It is pathetic!!

Certainly the better option than Guthrie based on their respective showings at Cambridge. Guthrie looked terrible, like he didn't know where his feet were!

Permanent CB. Looks ok to me in the games he played last week.I'm pleased with that. After all I cannot see us doing any better in the transfer market.

What happened to Tilt?! Evans dillied over chicken feed (50k) and the rest is history.
He's still god though

Lincoln reject, how far we've sunk. Normalised now though

Wilson may not be a world-beater, but he deserves a chance. Don't think he did a lot wrong in the friendlies? In any case, he is probably only viewed as a back-up until Chambers / Toto become available again.

Wish we could have picked up a left footed Centre Back but happy with this signing. Re the other postings regarding Tilt, Barnsley agreed a fee for him and then the goalposts were moved leading to them eventually kicking the deal into touch. According to the Blackpool Press feed he is about to sign a new contract with the Tangerines.

Centreback absolutely vital position to improve and this is the best we can do! We needed a stellar signing at Striker and Centreback, we got Norwood, Great but this is not good enough. At centreback we have an aging Chambers, Woolfenden and An injured Nsiala....no disrespect to this player but he couldnt get in a league 2 side, albeit a promotion winning one......we need a top centreback....POOR 🐬

Obviously don't want to judge him before I see him play..... but this seems like an awful signing. Signing a Lincoln reject who could hardly get into their League 2 team

I can't believe the negativity around this signing. He's been brought in to play this Saturday, and then probably the Checkatrade games. Why would we spend money on essentially a back up? Can see Chambers and Wolf starting most games, with Toto back up and then Ndaba playing Checkatrade games.

Cant believe the negativity!?!?!? Really!?!? Been crying out for a top centreback and this is what we get...JOKE !

Dolphin - A top Centre back on a free transfer? Unlikely. Chambers is captain of the club so is going to play, so are you saying you would rather have a new centre back or Wolf? Personally would rather see LW play and continue to give our youngsters a chance. Signing this guy for essentially 1 game and emergency cover on a free makes sense.

Only positives about signing Wilson he has been around the group for a few weeks & featured in last 3 pre-season games so knows his teams mates & style Lambert wants: if we had signed another Free transfer this week with no pre-season-season or game time it would likely lead to injury & certainly been really struggling with no match sharpness! I hope we still bring in another Defender before Sunderland we might get away with Wilson at Burton thou it wilnt be easy of course!

Wilson has done alright on trial, his history isn't doing himself any favours as didn't seem to want to fight for his place at Lincoln. Said it before that every player has a club he belongs to.

Seems like a good short term signing, lets give the guy a chance before talking about what fans from other clubs think. The proof of the pudding as they say, roll on Saturday....COYB!!

Some people have no idea. Jack sted. The reason he couldnt get into lincolns team was because he broke his leg early last season. They then signed jason shackell, who formed a good partnership in their centre of defence and he couldnt get back in. Bluearmy 81. As usual, dont let the facts get in the way. Evans didnt silly overctilt. Just as they have with Barnsley this year, they kept moving the goalposts, and like Barnsley, we gave up trying . And frankly dont understand why so many town fans make a big deal about him. Up to last season hed had just 1 season in league football, yet you all think hes great. We are now signing a much more experienced player and you all say hes crap. Pathetic. As so often, fans moaning just for the sake of moaning. Sam white uk. Dont agree with you about Guthrie at cambridge. Looked marginally the better defender of the 2 at cambridge but widon more comfortable on the ball.

Happy with this.
Why does everyone cry over Tilt?
If he was that good wouldnt somebody have snapped him up by now.

No problem with Wilson, don´t know anything about him. But is he Lamberts first choice or another plan B, or in worst case, plan C because Evans won´t give his managers the desired support?

Need to look at this player closely.
30 years old.
Best he's managed is loan deals, and when signed on permanent deals, unable to stake a claim, and deemed not good enough.
I think I'll leave it there.
And pray dear god that he will never partner our no4.
It has disaster written all over it.
And before all the happy clappers jump on the bandwagon with there give him a chance statements. He's 30 years old and has never been a regular in any side ever.
This isn't the type signing to gain promotion. Simple.

Don't see the negativity around this signing.

He's a cheap and experienced option as a 3rd/4th choice centre back. We're going to play a hell of a lot of games this season so need another CB, and no point investing loads of money on someone who isn't going to be happy as a role player.

Can see why some would see signing a guy released by Lincoln on a free is a bit underwhelming but he isn't being signed to be first choice. We have an injury crisis at centre back and he will likely play a handful of games this season.

It would be very difficult to sign a top quality centre back on a free, especially when you then say to them, youre not playing once Nsiala and Chambers are back. Obviously not ideal we have neither of our first choice centre backs for the opening game but just got to get on with it.

When everyone's fit & available i'm assuming Wilson will just be back-up to Chambers / Nsiala / Woolfenden / Ndaba....and Skuse can fill in if needed.

Makes sense,no point in wasting cash on someone who's only going to be 4th/5th choice.

My son saw him play and said he did ok - bang on Swedish Steve, we have to at least give him a chance. We were always going to sign Wilson or the other trialist.
