Lambert: They're Young Kids Learning and We Need a Bit More Experience
Friday, 26th Jul 2019 10:27

Town boss Paul Lambert believes his young squad needs the help of a little more experience with three further additions in his thoughts and specific individual targets in mind.

Asked whether, given the strength of the squad, the play-offs rather than automatic promotion might be viewed as failure in the season ahead, Lambert responded with a question of his own.

“Do you know how old they are?” he said. “They’re kids learning, they have to learn on the job. There’s no full experience there.

“Because we’ve come down from the Championship people automatically think we’re going to bounce back up, but they [the young players] have to learn.

“They will get beaten at times when you think, ‘dear oh dear, we weren’t at it’ and they’ll play unbelievable football. You get that with kids.

“The realism has to take over at certain parts. We’re a good side with energy, enthusiasm and all those sorts of things, and we’ll be a threat.

“We’ve got goalscorers at the top end of the pitch. They need a bit of help in certain areas of the pitch but the football club, Ipswich Town, the badge indicate expectancy levels, that’s normal

"But we have to have a little bit more experience, lads that have played a lot of games.”

Said that last season and then brought in players who were worse than the kids

Experience is great but we want players with experience of success and not experience of failure. Sadly with the miniscule playing budget Marcus is going to give Paul to work with he's not likely going to be able to attract the sort of targets we badly need. Just look at all the recent players we've been linked with. Apart from Norwood and Holy this transfer window has been depressing. Yes we have to work within the parameters of life in League One as SCMP limits spending on player wages to a percentage of club Turnover. Because we're not privy to the exact wage bill of our existing player squad following the cuts (and according to big-mouth Mick they have all been cut significantly as a result of our relegation) we can only guess how close we are to the limit already. If we're at the limit somebody at the club should come out and say so. However, surely Paul Lambert would have been told and know if we are already totally maxed out against the SCMP limits. So the fact he's asking for additions suggests we can't be up to the limits as things stand. Therefore, one can only presume Evans is continuing to try and do things on the cheap. To go anywhere in life you need some drive and ambition. ITFC seems to the black sheep of the Marcus Evans Limited empire, it's so very depressing!

Said the exact same in January;

We ended up with a couple of cripples, a player who wants to jump ship 3 months later, oh and Simon Dawkins.

It is quite disturbing, as usual, to find the supporters ,very keen to maintain interest and rekindle enthusiasm for the season ahead , continue to be treated a bit like ‘mushrooms ‘ – ‘kept in the dark ‘ !
There'll be good reason often to play cards close to the chest ,but the fear of failure from the top at ITFC remains at a high level .Anticipation is building ,we all want to support a strong team ,and enjoy a well put together balanced squad .
It is time fo ME to personally encourage belief ,AND convince us that he is doing everything possible to enhance our prospects ,and to actively continue support for PL and co.,who seem a bit discouraged & worried !

Completely agree with Lambert. More experience is a must but with a week to go until kick off, I find it remarkable yet not surprising, that key deals haven't been completed. Very much like other seasons, Evans has left it far too late. Shame.
