Former Blues Striker Bent Retires
Thursday, 25th Jul 2019 18:28

Former Blues striker Darren Bent has announced his retirement at the age of 35.

Cambridge-based Bent came through the Town academy having been spotted playing for Godmanchester Rovers’ U13s by Blues scout Barry Kettlewell.

The Tooting-born frontman made his first-team debut as a sub in the UEFA Cup tie away in Helsingborg in November 2001. He scored the first of his 55 Blues goals in the 4-1 League Cup defeat at Newcastle United later the same month and netted his first Premier League goal in the 1-0 home win against Middlesbrough the following April.

In total, Bent made 116 starts and 25 sub appearances for Town before departing to Charlton for £3 million in the summer of 2005. Town received a further £2.58 million via a sell-on when Bent left the Addicks for Tottenham in the summer of 2007.

Spells with Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham (loan), Brighton (loan), Derby (initially loan) and Burton (loan) followed as well as 13 full caps and four goals for England, having previously represented the U15s, U16s, U19s and U21s.

He was released by Derby at the end of the 2017/18 campaign having spent the second half of that season on loan with the Brewers.

Great memories of Darren. Remember his home debut against Manchester United when Van Scuba Diver swindled a penalty that effectively sent us down.

He absolutely terrified defences playing with the indomitable Shefki Kuki ,and his pace and enthusiasm was often remarkable .An essential part of a real team who made our lives interesting and happy !

I remember seeing him in a pre season at Readings Elm park as he came off at half time I said come on get a goal, he said I will he got a hat trick in the 2nd half. Always loved him after that.

So so true. Real sliding doors moment. We'd have been in the Prem when the parachute payments were introduced. That Kuqi injury toward the end of the season was the moment it all went wrong. That and the arrival of the Dark Lord

I was at his debut in Helsingborg. He nearly scored then. The rest, as they say, is history.

Was drinking with players and management after the game in Helsingborg and asked him to sign my shirt as could see he had so much talent even then. He shyly did. For once I was right. What A talent! Gave us some good, almost great, times. TWTD!!!

When you consider that it was 14 years ago that he played for us, getting nearly 6 million for him was a huge amount of money for us

Think it was Malcolm Moore who first spotted Darren . Yes midastouch that penalty still annoys me if i happen to remember it, i also thought we had a better shout for a trip on Darren second half but suppose its water under the bridge. Thanks for the memories and good luck in whatever you choose to do Darren .
