Ex-Walsall Defender Guthrie Training With Blues
Monday, 22nd Jul 2019 20:00

TWTD understands former Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie trained with the Blues at Playford Road today.

Guthrie, 26, left the Saddlers at the end of last season following their relegation to League Two after two years at the Bescot Stadium.

Prior to that the Devizes-born centre-half started his professional career with Crewe Alexandra having previously been with non-league Pewsey Vale. While with the Alex he spent time on loan with Leek Town.

Guthrie (pictured above, centre, red shirt) recently spent time on trial with Oxford United as he looks to find a new club.

The 6ft 3in tall centre-half could be involved for the Blues in tomorrow night’s friendly at Notts County.

Town are in the market for another senior centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced out-and-out central defenders at the club, ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, and the likes of Cole Skuse, Janoi Donacien and Myles Kenlock who play that role in addition to their primary positions.

Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which has ruled him out for six weeks.

Former Lincoln City man James Wilson similarly joined in with training last week and came on as a sub in the 5-0 win at Colchester on Friday evening.

Speaking about Wilson after the victory over the U’s, manager Paul Lambert said: “There’s not really any news on James. He’s not done anything the whole pre-season and we asked if we could have a look at him.

“He’s trained a little bit and he did really well when he came on but he’s miles short of match fitness, as he will admit himself.

“He’s really comfortable with the ball and he has been a good player. It’s just about his game time and training time, which is way down.

“But centre-half is an area we must look at. We need experience but the problem with James is that he hasn’t trained.”

Elsewhere, former Bury defender Adam Thompson, who was linked with Town last week, is training with Bolton with a view to joining the Trotters.

Surely this guy can't be any better than Luke Wolfenden who remember played regularly for Swindon last season must fill him with confidence being linked with these has beens who drift from club to club looking for a game.

What's not to like. But the cherry on the cake could be that he's left footed? Anybody any ideas?

If we are going to bring in frees on cheap wages then they need to be better than our current younger players. Is this fella better than Wolfenden? Unlikely.

I really feel for Wolfenden, he has done what has been asked of him, gone out on loan, he is a good player, for God sake give him a chance. I have always been impressed with him.

The big question for me is how has Guthrie trained any differently than Wilson if both had contracts expire at the same time and neither has had a club since.

Wouldn't mind Guthrie either as a League One hardened left sided centre back but won't that be the same issue in terms of match fitness?

Come on Evans surely we have something considering we made over two millions in sell on fees that weren't accounted for. With our two main centre halves out first game at least even if Woolfenden comes in who else partners him? We need a good start and I fear for our back line without some experienced centre half of better quality than we're being mentioned with.

Why are you all assuming this means Wolfenden won't play? We urgently need depth at CB. Especially as Toto and Chambers are out for the first game of the season.

It would be suicidal to rely on youth players for the whole season, we need backup.

I'm training with Town at Playford Rd today. I'm 5ft8 but am comfortable with either foot and my versatility means I can fill it at either of the right or left back roles. At 53 I wouldn't say i'm marauding anymore as I get quite tired, but im still a better option than the others we are currently being linked with ! Unfortunately my shorts got ripped on holiday so Id not be able to be considered until my replacement pair arrive from amazon. Should still make the bench for Burton tho !!

I'd have no problem if this lad signed. Good age, experience and is left footed.

And he wouldn't be coming in to take minutes away from Woolfenden. I think the place of our starting CB's is totally up in the air. Which ever partnership of Nsiala, Chambers, Woolfenden and the new CB (possibly this lad) performs best should start the majority of games.

I don't understand why Wilson hasn't trained. As an out-of-contract footballer, wouldn't that be your priority?

Totally uninspiring; but total reality.

But would always wish him well, should he become one of us. Must be given a fair chance.

Like it or not fees aren't going to be paid for players. Guthrie has first team experience (as does The Woolfe) but he has more of it AND he's left footed. This could be a win win for lower wages and he's still a good age.
Keep Judge, keep Dozzer or sell him for big bucks and get him back on a season loan.
Get in some more experienced, mature players and use the youngsters as back up, fill the bench with them.

How utterly depressing. However, we only really need a 4th choice defender who is fit enought to cover the first game of the season. Chambers and Woolf will then presumably carry on together until Toto is back fit.
