Former Lincoln Defender Wilson Training With Blues
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2019 16:32

TWTD understands free agent former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson was training with the Blues squad at Playford Road today.

Town are very much in the market for another senior centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced central defenders at the club, ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, although Cole Skuse impressed at the heart of the defence against Sheffield United towards the end of last season.

Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which appears likely to see him miss the first few weeks of the season.

Wilson, 30, will hope to show manager Paul Lambert and his staff that he is the man to fill that vacancy and win a deal at Portman Road.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of last month as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Wake up boys, we are a 3rd tier club, and 3rd tier clubs shop in the 4th tier, the loan market and bosman league. We were sh!te on Sunday, and I fear we will be sh!te at Burton.

I fear this is a sign of where we are heading, rather than where we are.

There were people on this site over the past couple of years saying a drop to League 1 would be a good thing, rather than being a mid-table Championship Team, scrapping fiercely to stay there on meagre resources. Reading some of the above suggests it is only now reality is dawning on some, where did you think the Squad would be filled from?

Some of the comments above about a player you have never seen play and who is only on trial are completely uncalled for. He has apparently 231 league and cup appearances, only 37 of his league appearances were in League 2, the rest were in League 1 or the Championship. Lincoln may have had 2 very good centre-backs who worked well together and brought him in for cover. He agreed to terminate his contract.

I dont know what benefit there is in pouring vitriol on players playing for the club or those seeking to play for the club.

What a load of rubbish, Yep WalkThe Walk, I'll wet my bed over this.. and so will 99% of proper town fans who care about the club.

My worry is us being linked with a whole load of league 2 players...no quality loans coming in and not linked to any out of contract Championship level players. We shuld be buildign a Championship squad if we want to get out of this poor league - not getting in more dross like Hurst did!

Evans has said we can pay wages or pay transfer fees - well we obviously are nt paying fees so lets pay wages for decent out of contract Championship players..

This is very worrying & I dint think the defence is anywhere near good enough & we have one striker..does any one else??

I know people can't cope if you criticise the owner or the manager but what is happening here is a complete lack of ambition. We've signed an unproven striker at this level (and how did we do that, was nobody else in for him?) and a very tall keeper who should have been earning a fraction of Bart's freed up wages. There won't be any Premier league loans of substance, that costs money. The boy from Everton just wants a club and they don't want him. We will soon get the Financial Fair Play smokescreen drifting across forums but as we know that can be overcome. Evans just doesn't care anymore. And all those who seem resigned to the situation please wake up with both eyes open.

beats me how some people have simply rolled over and accepted the dreadful state of the club. From being a club that was respected and admired .a club that had ambition, a club that had players that became household names to anyone interested in football, they are getting excited about mediocre players from lowly clubs joining ITFC. Years of under investment, apathy, and bad decisions have all but destroyed this club. .If we even make mid table next season i for one will be amazed.

So does the 5 Point Scam still apply in its original wording or has it been watered down now we're in League One? Here it is in its full gory:
1 — ‘To provide a significant ongoing financial commitment to the club's academy, enabling a steady flow of players into the first-team.'
2 — ‘To provide a sustainable and competitive squad salary budget.'
3 — ‘To make annual investment funds available to purchase players in the early stages of their career and to assist in their development.'
4 — ‘Maintaining a stable management and coaching team.'
5 — ‘To develop a team to play attractive and exciting football.'

Do you remember McAuley? Signed from Lincoln. Cresswell? Tranmere. Going back further: Mariner? Plymouth. Get your knickers untwisted and give these boys a chance. Negativity never does anybody any good.

Speccybaz ,yes we are a league one club now, thanks to Evans ,and his policy has not changed , He will drag us deeper and deeper, the day will come when reaching the heights Lge 1 will be a bridge too far .Under investment will take the club in one direction.Evans has FAILED, his investment and interest will be scaled down and will fail again .

Weren't we among the bottom few in the Championship in terms of wages paid? Therefore, I don't see how Evans was living up to pledge 2 in the 5 point scam where it supposedly commits the club to a competitive squad salary budget. I realised it had to be balanced against the need for a sustainable budget but I would argue putting us in the bottom few meant it couldn't really be deemed as having been a competitive budget to compete at that (Championship) level. The balance was much too skewed towards sustainable rather than competitive. And it's obviously bitten us on the bum as now we're several million worse off given we've dropped a league as a result. What's the point of having a plan if it's not adhered to in such a fundamental way?

Edmundo, the guy is a 30yr old journeyman who couldnt get in the Lincoln side last season. Hardly a prospect - How can you even mention Mariner in the same breath??

This is not sending out a very good message to Alan Judge complete lack of ambition we should be getting players in to improve the team not as cover if Judge had any sense or ambition he would up sticks and go to QPR we'll probably sign this guy then send him out on loan. Edmundo you can't compare this guy to McAuley,
Cresswell and Mariner these players were playing regular first team football and at the top of their game.

No player has lit up our side for Donkeys years. To mention McGoldrick and Berra (don't care where ex players might be now) in glowing terms is hilarious. I'm just waiting for 3 blooming points (from one game in league) Getting a bad vibe our bunch of numpties think league 1 will be a breeze “Will not be”

Ok so it's not Gerard Pique - who some people expect to sign, but at this stage and on the opening day of the season we are looking at a back line of

Ndaba
Woolfenden
Emmanuel
Kenlock

Great for the future - but getting off to a start against an astute tactician in Nigel Clough - we don't want to get off to a 4-0 battering. Yes - the kids are great, but only integrating them gradually around some experienced pros.

This guy coming in at 30 yrs old with something to prove, but with plenty of league experience is EXACTLY what our budget and SHORT term needs are. Who's to say we don't chuck him a deal till January on a month to month basis. He might possibly be inspired by the size of the club, facilities and “possible” support so much so that he laps it up and shines for a few appearances whilst Chambers and Nsiala are out. At the same time, he might even secure a shirt for 7, 8, 9 games and shine.

I'd personally welcome him rather than 2 x 20 year olds with 3 first team appearances between them playing Burton and potentially Sunderland as the first 2 games. Put yourself in Lamberts position, Evans' position, and any true fans position - if we lose those 2 games from the off, and are in the bottom 3 - it's not the ideal start.

I don't see anything wrong with shopping in the bargain basement if this guy helps in securing 3 / 6 points in our first 2 games rather than 2 defeats - which against Burton and Sunderland with 2 kid CB's is on the cards is so, so offensive. The guy could even be a cheap version of Collins at this level who's capable of staying fit for 3 games in a row.

I remember many years ago West Ham Utd getting promoted to the Premier league with 2 19 year old centre backs, what is the obsession with experienced centre backs? We have good young players, give them a chance and yes they will make mistakes but that's how we all learn our craft. Give youth a chance.

The real fear I have is that this player is an indication of who we can afford, and so any others will be of similar calibre. This suggests another stop gap filler where the hope is that we can get a season or two out of him at minimal cost.

We have just over a fortnight before we start, and far from assembling a squad that suggests positive thinking we come across as a Sun morning pub team scrabbling around to make up the numbers.

I also suspect we will be seeing more leave than join over the next couple of weeks.
