Former Lincoln Defender Wilson Training With Blues
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2019 16:32

TWTD understands free agent former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson was training with the Blues squad at Playford Road today.

Town are very much in the market for another senior centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced central defenders at the club, ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, although Cole Skuse impressed at the heart of the defence against Sheffield United towards the end of last season.

Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which appears likely to see him miss the first few weeks of the season.

Wilson, 30, will hope to show manager Paul Lambert and his staff that he is the man to fill that vacancy and win a deal at Portman Road.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of last month as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Some posters mention doing our shopping at Poundland, more like food banks.

Jesus, Evans.
What is the point of bringing in decent managers and then not supporting them with any funds?

This is not the backed to the hilt, all guns blazing for promotion transfer news we were looking for lets be honest.
Let Woolfy and Ndaba have a crack rather than just get in anyone who has ever played at the back....

League two free transfer is this really where we have now ended up

worrying, Evans what are you doing !! you have got us in this position with your under investment in the team at least free the funds to be able to sign the positions that will ultimately cost us this year as well!!

He's only training! If he doesn't look good enough I'm sure PL will move on.
We've had plenty in the past that join team for short term but don't stay so not sure he'll be any different.

People are saying he would provide cover. Provide cover for who? If it's chambers, then my god.
If he joined can I put a tenner on him saying big club, big ground, premier league facilities etc. Clearly he has not been that greater player throughout his career.
Is there an outside chance that we can sign someone decent that will get people excited again?
I've never heard of this bloke and do not have the slightest ounce of excitement about him.
It does seem an awfully big grave we are digging ourselves into. Hope the headstone is good!!

If he couldn't get at kick at Lincoln when they were in League Two and now not deemed even remotely good enough to play for them in League One - so much so they paid him off - then why on earth would we want him? We can surely do better?

Must've won the knobby knees competition at the local village fate. Either that we came last in the raffle at the same village fate!!

He must be really cheap. What a state we are in. Possibly the worst cv I have seen!!

I'm sure if some people on here were judges they'd have people carted off to the cells before they'd taken their hand off the bible !

This guy has been a regular in League 1 for the last 4 years with Oldham and a loan spell with Walsall so he knows what the league is about and has an International Cap so clearly not as useless as some are making out. He could be a decent squad player. IF he signs how about we give him a chance ???

I seem to remember David Mcgoldrick not getting in the Forest team, Berra wasn't getting picked for Wolves in his last season there ....

They turned out ok

Nice to see everyone writing him off before he had even signed! If Lambert thinks he is good enough then we give him a chance if not we move on. Until we see him play it's impossible to tell if he will be a hit or miss but for crying out loud give the lad a chance

Look at the photo capture, i like him already, willing to put his head and body on the line for the team. Any one that's willing to do that is ok to be given a chance to tr ain with us in my eyes.

The lad actually broke his ankle & they got Shackell in & he forged a decent partnership with the other CB in a regular winning side so you can't knock him for net getting games. He's done it with clubs in league 1 so it doesn't do any harm in taking a look at him & obviously PL must know about him as a player otherwise he wouldn't be training with us. Yes we are now League 1 & unfortunately PL has got no money to spend so we're going to be getting players like this and let's not forget that we have got quite a young side so a bit of experience from the lower league isn't a bad thing in L1. It might turn out that PL doesn't sign him so nots let get to dis heartened fellas. COYB!

As I said weeks ago, under Evans we will continue to be one of the lower funded clubs in whatever league we are in. Personally I can't see a bright future in that philosophy, Then as soon as any player shines he is sold. Only one way your going to go in the leagues.

For those bellyaching about what Town are going right now .... off you go then, start your revolution. See how far it gets you, or the Club, in trying to oust Evans. Pointless negative actions that will only serve to unsettle our young squad. On your heads be it!

Not being negative on purpose but its clear from his history.....he's useless......#Wheres the decent signings?

Scraping the barrel for scraps.was looking forward to the season starting with a fresh start and new beginnings but I really have my doubts at the moment.Nothing at the moment is inspiring for me or our great supporters.sad times indeed.

Not even a rumour... he is actually training with us 🤦🏼‍♂️ We only need cover for the Burton game. Make do with 2 from Donacien, Skuse, Wolf and Nbada for that game and then bring in a Prem loanee as cover in late August. I actually thought we might give it a real go at getting back up ASAP but are we now digging in for 17 seasons in L1?

Can we all go down to playford road for a trial? I used to be a very good keeper, but I can also play midfield. This guy might be ok. Fresh start and all that. Ipswich till I die.

A lot of people need to get real. We're a league one club now and without massive investment we shop where we can. We'll be good enough to hold our own but a lack of quality at the back and in midfield means instant promotion is unlikely. Pessimistic or realistic? It's all a matter of opinion.

If he was any good, then would he not have been getting in at Lincoln and teams from higher divisions after him? Sounds like there is definitely no money available for transfers.

Tractorboybig I'm not blaming Lambert he has to shop in the bargain basement again due to the owner we've made over two million in unexpected fees from sell ons but not a penny to the manager we've gone from challenging under magilton to scraping the barrel in league one under Evans but apparently according to some on here you can't have a go at him if you can't come up with an alternative option well there are clubs now even the likes of arsenal challenging and wanting answers from their owners why can't our fans
