Lambert: Garbutt Will Be an Asset
Monday, 15th Jul 2019 13:56

Blues boss Paul Lambert believes new loan signing Luke Garbutt will be an asset to his side, highlighting the Everton man’s delivery as one of his main attributes.

Garbutt, 26, joined the Blues on loan for the season from the Toffeemen last week and joined up with the squad in Germany but wasn’t involved in the Interwetten Cup games at Meppen yesterday. He is likely to make his first appearance in a Town shirt at Colchester, one of his former loan clubs, on Friday.

"I think he has an incredible left foot and he puts incredible balls into the box and his delivery is fantastic," Lambert told iFollow Ipswich in a lengthy interview at the end of last week.

"Technically he's a gifted footballer and his set plays are excellent, so hopefully he'll add something to us. I'm looking forward to working with him.”

Garbutt is primarily a left-back - and that appears where Lambert plans to use him - but finished last season playing at left wing for his last loan side Oxford.

"If players can do it then that’s great but I know where I want to play him,” the Blues manager continued.

"His delivery from wide areas, whether it's left-back or left wing is fabulous so he'll be an asset to us that's for sure."

Garbutt said after signing for the Blues that he is looking for a club where he can find a home with his Everton contract unlikely to be extended at the end of the season and having spent the last few seasons on loan at a variety of clubs.

“He needs somewhere to settle as well, having always been out on loan,” Lambert continued.

“A lot of water has to go under that bridge to see where he goes with it but as a guy and as a professional footballer he's somebody who wants to do well. Along with Norwood and Holy I think he'll be a really good asset."

This does feel like a seasons loan with a view to a permanent move. Problem is, if he's really good, he could go somewhere bigger, and if he's a flop, he's used up valuable wages. Whilst generally this is a good move, the lower we sink down the football league, the less effective these kind of deals could be. Still, hopefully it will all work out and we get promoted!

Well theres a reason Garbutt hasn't found a club in a higher division and its prob due to his defending not being that great. What we need above all else are full backs with good positional sense who can get crunching tackles in, win the ball, stop crosses at source. Distribution needs to be good too of course but just having an incredible left foot is nowhere near enough. Sorry PL, I hope this is way too pessimistic.

It's really about time we ALL became a little bit more positive , started ,at the very least , to trust PL's judgement and looked forward with positive optimism : put the gloom behind ,eradicate the negative ,actually hope to enjoy !If we've a team ethic that's right and proper and we see concerted teamwork and sporting effort then we can't ask for much more !

This BS just has to stop. The guy is a journeyman pro who cant find a club. I understand building his confidence but this description makes him sound like Barcelona have made a huge error not signing him. Let's hope he makes it with us then we can sell him to the Spaniards for £100m. And Suffolkboy I just don't see any evidence being able to trust Lambert's judgement, we got relegated by a country mile remember.

Fair point Suffolkboy. I like your sentiments and stance. We must get behind the team as much as we can. BUT PL MUST start to deliver results come August. He's had nearly 9 months and little but words to show. Positive yes, but realistic too I'd say.

Christ, some of you “ fans” on here need to sod off and “ support” someone else if you've nothing better to do than spread your gloom n doom . I'm sick of it tbh and Ipswich Town certainly don't need “ fans” like you!

Other people are entitled to their views Arnie M. If you can't take it, it is you can't take it, leave.

The prophets of doom on here are the reason why so many supporters don't come on here anymore.TWTD is a great fan site but too many ignore the ground rule of respect which Phil needs to consider. Opinions are one thing but there are regulars who appear to enjoy baiting others for their own amusement. Don't let Trump speak win the day.

Good point Very, but where do we draw the line between being "a prophet of doom" and "baiting"? I mean we have just been relegated so it is inevitable many feel pessimistic but people are entitled to express that and shouldn't be shot down by those saying "I'm sick of people being negative; get behind the team". That is also trolling I would argue.

we have a lot of young players. I think this is a good loan. It's going to be hard to find better players than we have that also have experience AND available on a loan, as most PL clubs only have youngsters to loan out which is great but just not what we need right now.
