SV Meppen 0-0 Town (3-1 on Pens)
Sunday, 14th Jul 2019 16:09

Town finished fourth at the Interwetten Cup after losing 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to hosts SV Meppen following a goalless draw. But more of a concern for the Blues than the defeat was the loss of Teddy Bishop to a knee injury.

German third tier side Meppen had been beaten 5-4 on penalties by FC Utrecht after a 0-0 draw in the afternoon’s second match.

The Blues fielded a different XI from the one which started against Fortuna in their opening game, which ended 4-1 to the Bundesliga side.

Short-term injury absentees Gwion Edwards, Jon Nolan and Alan Judge, new signing Luke Garbutt, keepers Harry Wright and Adam Przybek, and Freddie Sears, who is out until November, all missed out on involvement in both games.

The Blues, in a 4-2-3-1 system with Kayden Jackson the lone striker, created the game’s first opening on 10. Skipper Luke Chambers regained possession after a corner had been cleared, then played it back to Teddy Bishop, whose cross eventually dropped to Jordan Roberts but the former Crawley man’s shot was blocked.

Moments later, Myles Kenlock made a strong run from left-back and won another flag-kick from which Roberts headed high and wide at the far post.

On 17 Jackson had the ball in the from a cross from left winger Roberts but the referee’s whistle had already blown for offside.

But the Blues were on top and in the 25th minute went within a whisker of going in front. Dozzell won the ball on halfway and fed Danny Rowe on the right. The winger played the ball ahead for Jackson, who took it past keeper Erik Domaschke but wide and hit his low shot against the outside of the post.

There was a concern for Town in the 33rd minute when Bishop required treatment on his right knee after twisting awkwardly as he came out of a challenge, looking in some discomfort. The midfielder was replaced by Bailey Clements for his second sub appearance of the afternoon.

Meppen began to get more into the game and keeper Tomas Holy used his height when punching away a corner. On 39 left-back Myles Kenlock and Marius Kleinsorge were both booked, the former for throwing the Meppen man judo style after he had pulled him back.

A minute later, Town had another chance, Roberts sending Jackson away towards goal. The ex-Accrington man rounded the keeper but a Meppen defender got back to block the striker's shot at goal. His subsequent effort was also blocked and looped up into the keeper’s arms.

Roberts was booked for a late challenge in the 43rd minute, then a minute later Jovan Vidovic joined him for a foul on Rowe.

There was no further action before the referee’s whistle signalled the end of a goalless 45 minutes and a penalty shoot-out.

Jackson slammed Town’s first penalty into the net to the keeper’s left, before Vidovic’s spot-kick for the home side just slipped through Holy’s grasp and into the net.

Dozzell’s second Blues penalty was also sent to the keeper’s left but was saved, then the German team went ahead with Marco Komenda sending Holy the wrong way.

Skipper Chambers hit his penalty low to the keeper’s right but again the spot-kick was saved and Hilal El-Helwe made it 3-1 by again sending Holy one way and the ball the other.

Roberts’s fourth Blues penalty was also hit to Domeschke’s right and was saved to hand Meppen third place in the tournament with Town finishing fourth.

The Blues had been the better team during the 45 minutes, creating the only chances with Jackson’s effort against the post the best.

But a bigger concern than the result was Bishop’s injury, the midfielder, who was among Town’s best performers, having finally appeared to be getting over his fitness problems.

Toto Nsiala's apparent hamstring injury earlier in the afternoon means it may have been a costly afternoon for the Blues fitness-wise.

SV Meppen: Domaschke, Jesgarzewski, Osee, Vidovic, Komenda, Tankulic, Egerer, Kleinsorge, Andermatt, Duker, El-Helwe.

Town: Holy, Emmanuel, Chambers (c), Ndaba, Kenlock, Downes, Dozzell, Bishop (Clements 34), Rowe, Roberts, Jackson.

We need to start winning games. Yes,it doesn't have anything riding on it in pre season, but we've spent the last season and a half winning very few football matches. Need some confidence.

know this is preseason but it does paint a picture. If the obvious floors aren't removed we are going no where fast. Sort it Mr Lambert and less of the PR chat

It's not about results. It's about finding out what problems exist and sorting it out before the season starts. If we won every game in preseason then it would be a worry in a kind of way.

It's early days and though easy to become concerned ,we must remember pre season games are important for team work , hardening up and sharpening fitness .Some injuries are highly likely and the impact should not be over dramatised : lets see how things develop but also let's hope Jackson will learn how to properly finish off : continuing near misses or failures are NOT what he should be about !

Another injury to Bishop...we have too many players made of driftwood. This squad desperately needs toughness for the slog ahead.

Going into season proper in August if we continue to lose it's not going to do anybody any good, yes getting some players to gel and to increase fitness is all important but the continuation of losing would feel like we have't even had a break from relegation.

No doubt PL will put some positive spin on this.

Obviously very difficult to comment without seeing the performances.

Sounds like first 45 we were outclassed and always very difficult trying to play cultured football which PL is trying to create against a superior footballing side. Had that been a real cup match we may and probably should have approached the game very differently.

Second 45 sounds like were just not ruthless enough.

We have some great youngsters but we need to ensure we have a really solid and experienced spine to the team. The real disappointment is hearing yet again how we were carved open easily.

Unless we can build resilience and ruthlessness into our game then even a top six finish in Division 1 is going to be unrealistic. Good to hear though that James Norwood has a good game against quality opposition, great fear is if we loose him to injury at all then we will be witnessing more of the same. Sounds like Jackson just not quite up to it again.

In fairness youngsters will learn from experience, and a great credit to our academy that pretty much 50% of those that played today came from the academy. We do though need to see some consistent quality over quantity otherwise we will have a frustrating dearth of talent that fails to be realised.

Everybody stop wetting your pants!

On paper we were the 4th best team on this mini tournament, and so it proved to be the case. More of a concern are the injuries to key players in Nsiala and Bishop. Knowing Teddy's luck it'll be another long term one.

Winning is a habit. A habit we don't have anymore.

Taricco fan, unfortunately i think Bishop is made of Balsa wood. A talented player but far far too injury prone to be relied on . He ,sadly will be a burden rather than an asset . We cant afford to have that type of player , i feel for him but ,life can be crap at times .

Never expected anything out of this but 4-1 was very depressing in the first game, however we must learn to take our chances at the other end too. Quality opposition but we are still conceding too easily, the confidence thing will take time, we haven't played anything like a first 11 even yet, so lets not panic too much. Good teams are built from the back, we must sort out our defending, if we get nothing else right pre-season that's nailed on.
0-0 in the second game at least gave us a clean sheet, however the pen's show us where our confidence is currently.

I think the Colchester game will give a better understanding of how we are likely to fare in the season ahead.

Why the surprise with Bishop? He will not play more than 10 games in a season.

When was the last time Ipswich ever won a penalty shoot out? I can't recall one. We must have won one at some point but we don't seem terribly good at penalties. Norwich are the same, they always seem to lose on penalty shoot outs! Must be an EA thing! I remember seeing us lose to Chelsea on a shoot out when Mathie scored and Ruud Gullit came off the bench as player manager in an exciting League Cup game at Portman Road that ended 2-2. Think Scowcroft might of missed a penalty but can't remember the exact players that missed.

Gullit was class that night as well I recall when he came on following an injury to one of their defenders. He was one of those special players that always looked like he had time on the ball. So assured, no panic whatsoever.

Lone striker didn't work at all last year, and we got relegated, surely we must adopt a new approach this year. However, looking at today's games its more of the same. Mid table finish or lower, imo if we don't change.

Last week l was lambasted by some for bemoaning lack of signing etc....but this squad is lightweight and poor....#Wheres the signings. Really did expect more signings and have been taken aback by lack of.......we simply cannot win a game 🐬

Dolphin, you're placing far too much importance on what is essentially a fitness and team-building camp. You can't get a gauge for the season from 90 mins with two 11s and two lots of 45 minutes. Not an ideal start but the only thing I'm concerned by here is Ted's knee. Fingers crossed it was just a twinge 👍🏻

This is all just a kick about, 45 mins, diffrent 11s but when we get back and PL starts to put out a likely 11 or there abouts I really hope we see some wins, we need confidence.

If Norwood played the second game, we would likely have won it with the chances created. Im more optimist now with Norwood looking a promising finisher and our midfield are creating chances. Sounds like Kenlock is showing some aggression and decent wing play. Center back is a concern
