Luke Garbutt’s season-long loan from Everton is expected to be confirmed either tomorrow or Saturday, TWTD understands. As revealed earlier, the Blues are closing in on adding the 26-year-old to their squad for their 2019/20 League One campaign.

Once the deal is confirmed Garbutt will join up with his new team-mates in Germany and seems likely to make his first appearance in a Town shirt in one of the 45-minute games at the Interwetten Cup in Meppen on Sunday.

The Blues have been in the market for a left-back this summer with Jonas Knudsen having departed at the end of last season.

Myles Kenlock was the only other established left-sided full-back, although Tristan Nydam, primarily a central midfielder, can play that role and filled in during the second half at Paderborn on Saturday.

Garbutt joined Everton’s youth set-up from Leeds in 2009 but has made only eight starts - three in the Premier League - and four sub appearances - two in the top flight - for the Toffeemen.

However, the 5ft 10in tall Harrogate-born left-back has gained plenty of senior experience while out on loan at Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan and Oxford United, where he spent the whole of last season and latterly impressed in a left wing role, another position where the Blues are looking to add strength this summer.

Contracted to Everton until the summer of 2020, Garbutt has also won England caps at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

TimmyH added 18:32 - Jul 11 Not for me...personally prefer Kenlock to get some consistent games under his belt, anyway I feel he should be a competent league one left back without having a Premier league clubs touring loanee breathing down his neck (might even start before Myles) and I thought many were looking forward to playing our own/youth players coming through? Other areas in my opinion need to be addressed rather the LB - how about a CB to pressurise Luke Chambers or the weaker right back position?...

Unfortunately we have to endure their stupid posts with Evan's out ...... it's a painful record they keep spinning but have no alternatives and no idea about what's going on. Very painful!!!!

I don't think any team in any league other than those at the top of the prem ever go through a season with out loans. It would be nice I feel you could come on the site and not just moan but we can live in hope I suppose

TimmyH added 19:16 - Jul 11 NSV - haha! a sympathy vote, but I'll follow my gut reaction and that is of a journeyman Premier league loan in not our weakest area. I'd rather see some consistency of starting of our younger players now we have dropped to the third tier. On paper (if all fit) our potential starting line doesn't look that bad and if we were to have loans (which I'm against) - left wing, right back and central defence are our current areas which need attending.

ITID93 added 19:18 - Jul 11 I don't know why people are hating on the situation, we've had 1 game so far against a top flight German side and of which the likes of Norwood and judge weren't involved. I know we've had rotten luck these past few seasons which doesn't do well for fan morale, especially when we don't have a transfer budget. It's going to be a tough season, we all know it, but it should be one to get excited about and if this guy can add a bit more depth to LB or LW then I'm all the more for it. His contact is up in a year and if he performs well then we could get him in on a free. Here's to a new season in a new league looking for new beginnings. Up the town.

budgieplucker added 20:08 - Jul 11 A player who has seriously lost his way and in his last year of a 5 year deal at Everton where now at 26 he is unlikely to be offered a new contract at the Toffees. However, showed lots of early promise at Everton and England youth teams despite very few first team premiership appearances and has been wandering round the loan circuit for much of his professional life. However, has a very good left foot delivery especially from set pieces and not immune from turning up with the odd goal now and again and a fair few assists under his belt. Once seen as a serious challenger to Leighton Baines, but his defending gradually came in for criticism. Karl Robinson at Oxford reinvented him as a left winger and he had an excellent spell last season after being converted. Oxford fans hoping he would return and join the Div 1 outfit. If PL sees him as a project and thinks he can turn him around then we could have a very good player at this level with a pedigree to step up if his confidence can be built stronger.

You say 'mighty' rather sarcastically but you could say that about a few other players in other positions...

planetblue_2011 added 21:16 - Jul 11 Seems a decent enough signing for the season. Comes from a premiership side so can't be that bad. We do need another left sided player. Striker next & should just about do it for now. We will have a pretty good squad to take into the new season, get Huws & Sears back & we should do the business. COYB
