Town Grouped With Colchester and Gillingham in EFL Trophy
Tuesday, 9th Jul 2019 14:20

Town will be joined by Colchester United, Gillingham and a yet to be named U21 side from a club with a category one academy in their EFL Trophy group.

The game with the League Two U's will see manager Paul Lambert reunited with his old club, while keeper Tomas Holy will potentially lock horns with his former side, the Gills, for a third time.

The identity of the U21 team won’t be confirmed until it is drawn on Friday live on talkSPORT at 12.30pm when the dates of the fixtures will also be announced.

The competition, featuring all the League One and Two teams plus 16 U21 sides and known as the Checkatrade Trophy in recent seasons, is split on a north-south basis with eight groups in each region.

The Blues’ first ever EFL Trophy group fixtures - they play one EFL team at home, one away and the U21 team at home - will be played in the weeks commencing 2nd September, 7th October and 11th November.

The 16 clubs whose U21s will be in the competition this season are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Town’s group will almost certainly not feature Norwich City’s U21s with the authorities having prevented “high-profile clashes” with local rivals at that stage of the competition in previous seasons.

This sensibly will be used for our U23's team to get some higher-profile game time.

Maybe we could actually try to win it. Look at last seasons final between Sunderland and Portsmouth, a great day out for both clubs at Wembley, 80,000 people watching. It could make this terrible season worthwhile.

We cannot field a youth team.

"Minimum of four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI" - first team players.

Those calling for the U23's to play - why? We should be aiming to win this competition and the league. Considering we're fielding a very young squad anyway, why would we spend another season throwing away cup games under the pretence of improving young players? It hasn't benefited the club at all by doing so over the last few years. How many of the young players Mick fielded in wasted cup ties have come good for us? Most have been released. Failure to treat this a competition will show the lack of ambition here from Evans and co.

It would be good for us to get back into the habit of winning cup games - I'll definitely be going to at least one of those.

Cant we just say we don't want to take part.....
Bet Pompey and Sunderland regret involvement.
Big hindrance on both there seasons.
As they was both expecting top 2.

You would be close to having a point if it wasn't for the fact this competition ended in February and both Pompey and Sunderland were right in the automatic mix at that time.

They dropped away after that, not as a result of games in hand either, as they put together some poor results after they'd caught up.

The final last season was 31st March WarkTheWark but I suppose saying it was all over in February is near enough.

Warthewark. You was close to having a point.
All the extra games involved, couldn't of helped...injury being one example. It's a long season. February or any other months the same.

Some of you need you Head feasting I'm afraid!!!

A pointless cup and one that we need to be out of as soon as possible. Yes, let's play all of our fragile first team so that they can get injuries so they can't play for weeks or months in the league!!!

We have one chance of getting back to a more respectable level of the game and that's next season, so forget the cups and focus purely on the league table, anything else is a distraction we don't need. Both Sunderland and Portsmouth played in the final (a great day our at Wembley), now ask their fans what they would have really wanted... Championship football!!!

This is one cup competition too many. If anyone still thinks dropping down a league is a good thing ponder on the following. We are unlikely to get the quality loan players because of wages and a drop in status, the owner has increased debt to pay meaning no investment, more games for a small squad and more travelling. That said I'm reasonably hopeful that the squad we have has potential and will compete.

With our recent cup results, I shouldn't worry about it too much.

Exactly Wooley74. And the main reason the big 2 failed to go up.
