Town to Learn Two EFL Trophy Opponents Today
Tuesday, 9th Jul 2019 11:53

Town will learn two of their EFL Trophy group opponents this afternoon but with the full details of the draw not confirmed until Friday.

The two EFL sides the Blues will face in their first ever appearance in the competition, known in the last few seasons as the Checkatrade Trophy, will be drawn and made public this afternoon.

However, the identity of the academy category one U21 team who will complete the four-team group won’t be confirmed until it is drawn on Friday live on talkSPORT at 12.30pm when the dates of the matches will also be announced.

The competition, featuring all the League One and Two teams plus 16 U21 sides, is regionalised on a north-south basis with eight groups.

The Blues’ EFL Trophy group fixtures - they play one EFL team at home, one away and the U21 team at home - get under way in the week commencing September 2nd with the games streamed by the EFL.

The 16 clubs whose U21s will be in the competition this season are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Town’s group will almost certainly not feature Norwich City’s U21s with the authorities having prevented “high-profile clashes” with local rivals at that stage of the competition in previous seasons.

Is there anyone else that's quite looking forward to this like I am?

This brings home, where the club is now.
A former winner of a major European trophy ( and there are only 11 clubs in the whole of england to have done this). We now wait to see who we have in this tinpot competition.

Won't get Norwich in the group stage anyway. Like the article says they keep apart high profile clashes in the groups. Sunderland did play Newcastle last season but was in the knock out stages.

Not sure what sort of crowds we will get at Portman Road for this, suspect only a couple of stands will be open for matches.

Although it may well seem tinpot to some. The danger of not taking this or any cup competition seriously can have a effect on morale. In any sport winning is a habit, the same as losing can be. We want to be aiming at winning this tournament as well well as aiming for promotion. Success breeds success, the same can happen the other way if not careful

What a horrible competition to go into, I have no enthusiasm for it. We should field our youth players and senior players who need fitness to avoid risking any injuries to first teamers. Our total focus must be promotion back to the Championship.

So I'm assuming you will all be taking a rain check on a day out at Wembley then if we get to the final? 🤔🤔😉

Agreed Forrestsfingers. But weed need to start from scratch, as of now. Like winning 2 games on the trot.
We cant run before we walk.

Yes Hollywood. If we won this competition. Norwich will remind us for next 20 years.
The only comps worth winning, are what everyone else wants to win, and gets European football the next season.

Does anyone know town's lowest ever attendance for a competitive match?

I can see the early stages of this competition putting that unfortunate statistic under threat.

More ruddy whining, "oh we a re too good for this..etc"

Well let's prove it on the pitch, not gripe about it on here. And I expect there will be a fair few who will enjoy us winning games again.

We need to get back to winning, not whining.

I'm oldish NSV. Unfortunately earliest town memory around the mid 70,s. We had a fair side then....and if memory serves me right, a north stand that used to sway back and forth to the rhythm of the football.
