Paderborn 3-2 Town - Match Report
Saturday, 6th Jul 2019 16:06

Jordan Roberts and Kayden Jackson were on target, the latter from the penalty spot, but the Blues were beaten 3-2 by new Bundesliga side SC Paderborn in their first pre-season friendly at the Stadion Laumeskamp in Delbrück.

New keeper Tomas Holy was among those to start, playing his first game for the Blues since his summer switch from Gillingham, with manager Paul Lambert fielding a different team in the two halves, each a mix of youth and experience.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes as Town arrived at around 2.20pm following a three-hour trip from their training base close to the Dutch border.

James Norwood, Alan Judge, Jon Nolan and Gwion Edwards were all in the stands with the injured Freddie Sears with none of them in action in today’s game.

Among the inexperienced players in the XI before the break was attacking midfielder Armando Dobra. The 18-year-old Albanian U19 international was getting his first taste of senior football.

Roberts, starting as the lone striker with Teddy Bishop behind him with Dobra on the left and Jack Lankester on the right, won an early freekick but Andre Dozzell’s ball looped beyond the far post.

Paderborn, also fielding a mix and match side rather than a full-strength line-up, had their first opporunity on three, a loose ball falling to Felix Drinkuth, but his shot flew well over Holy’s goal.

The game began in a more competitive manner than most early season friendlies with the Blues winning two more freekicks with a German defender blocking a low Dobra strike from one. A corner followed the second with a Jack Lankester shot looping into the arms of home keeper Michael Ratajczak.

From Ratajczak Paderborn broke very quickly, passing the ball slickly and Kai Pröger eventually smashed a shot to Holy’s right from the edge of the box and into the net before the Czech keeper could move.

Despite going behind the Blues continued to find openings, Dozzell and Bishop feeding in left-back Myles Kenlock, who scuffed well wide, then Dobra, who rounded the keeper before being dispossessed by a retreating defender.

On 16 after good work from Dozzell, playing in a deeper midfield role alongside skipper Cole Skuse, Bishop played in Roberts but the former Crawley man dallied when he should have taken the chance early and the opportunity was cut out.

Two minutes later, Paderborn doubled their lead. The Blues played themselves into trouble midway inside their half, Babacar Gueye profited and fed Tobias Schwede to his left, from where he shot across Holy.

Christian Strohdiek was booked for a foul on Roberts on 20 and picked up the game’s first yellow card. Dozzell’s shot from the freekick was headed out by a defender.

Myles Kenlock picked up Town’s first booking for a foul on lightning striker Streli Mamba as Paderborn threatened to score again but Schwede on this occasion scraped wide from an angle on the left.

Just after the half hour, Holy made his first save for Town, blocking from Mamba after Toto Nsiala had given the ball away on the edge of his own box.

The home side made it 3-0 in controversial circumstances in the 34th minute when Gueye escaped beyond the Blues’ backline - according to the linesman at least, however, he looked well offside - and slipped the ball past the advancing Holy. Town boss Lambert and assistant Stuart Taylor complained bitterly to the referee.

Two minutes later, Town pulled a goal back. Paderborn skipper and ex-Brighton man Uwe Hünemeier played a pass back to Ratajczak, who delayed his clearance from inside his six-yard box allowing Roberts to block it over the line to make the scoreline 3-1.

Klaus Gjasula shot well over for Paderborn, who having established such a commanding lead were well in control, although with the Blues battling away gamely and seeking to carve out openings when in the final third.

A minute before the scheduled end of the half the Blues again played themselves into trouble but Holy saved Sebastian Vasiliadis’s low shot. Just before the break Dobra was shown a yellow card for a high boot.

Town had started the game brightly, making the early running and might well have scored, until the home side netted their first goal on the break.

The second followed soon afterwards with the Bundesliga team capitalising on the Blues trying to play football in their own half and giving the ball away, something they did on more than one occasion.

When in the final third Town look capable of creating chances but not taking them, with new frontman Norwood in the stands. Roberts’s goal was down to the striker’s persistence and the keeper’s complacency.

The Blues’ second half XI warmed up on the pitch at the break with Paderborn also changing their entire team.

Emyr Huws, playing his first game for the senior side since December 2017, was in midfield with Flynn Downes and Idris El Mizouni, behind lone striker Kayden Jackson, with Danny Rowe on the right and Bailey Clements on the left.

Tristan Nydam was at left-back with Janoi Donacien right-back with skipper Luke Chambers and Corrie Ndaba the centre-halves.

Christopher Antwi-Adjei hit an early effort wide for Paderborn before Jackson saw an effort from the left of the area blocked. Huws was just prevented from getting to the rebound by a defender and the ball rebounded behind.

On 65 Jackson and Rowe interchanged passes and the ex-Lincoln loanee was just thwarted by the last defender as he darted on to a return ball.

Two minutes later, the pair almost combined again after Huws had sent Jackson away down the right but Rowe had strayed offside as the pass came in from the former Accrington striker.

After a mid-half drinks break, Town were awarded a penalty when Jackson was felled by Luca Killian having beaten him down the left. The frontman took the kick himself and rolled the ball to Jannik Huth’s left as the keeper dived to his right.

The second half had lacked the intensity of the first but after the goal it became more competitive. On 78 Downes, as feisty as ever in midfield, was booked for pulling back a Paderborn player as they broke.

As the game moved into its final 10 minutes right-back Donacien crowded out Cauly Oliviera Souza after he had been found in space in the box.

The second half XI passed the ball around neatly and for long spells in the closing stages although without creating an opportunity.

In the 88th minute, after Huws had chased back a long way to win the ball after a loss pass had been played behind him, Town again played themselves into problems in their own box forcing Bartosz Bialkowski, on his 32nd birthday, to save from Souza.

Neither side threatened again before the referee’s whistle ended a more than usually entertaining friendly.

There was little between the sides in the second half with Town making the scoreline a more respectable and not unrepresentative 3-2.

Jackson took his penalty well, however, as in the first period it was difficult to see from where Town might score with new striker Norwood likely to make his debut at the Interwetten Cup next Sunday.

SC Paderborn first half: Ratajczak, Hünemeier, Drinkuth, Strohdiek, Gjasula, Pröger, Schwede, Gueye, Mamba, Holtmann, Vasiliadis.

SC Paderborn second half: Huth, Rumpf, Ritter, Souza, Schonlau, Shelton, Kilian, Antwi-Adjei, Tawiah, Kapic, Hilßner.

Town first half: Holy, Emmanuel, Nsiala, Woolfenden, Kenlock, Skuse (c), Dobra, Bishop, Lankester, Dozzell, Roberts.

Town second half: Bialkowski, Donacien, Chambers (c), Ndaba, Nydam, Downes, Huws, Rowe, El Mizouni, Clements, Jackson. Att: 956.

I do recall reading posts many months ago such as,

" It might do the club a favour to get relegated and rebuild "

NO NO NO! Was my answer to these comments.

We have gone down after 20 years of many mistakes by many individuals.

Relegation was never going to be about rebuilding, as is now being proved but DISMANTLING!

There were never going to be ANY positives about being in the third tier!!!

Posters on here cried out for the youngsters to be given a run out and now they are that's wrong 😂.

Finally Dolphin, you have seen the light!

Welcome to the real world.

A place where those of us that put our blind loyalty to one side, took a few steps back and thought,

"Hang on, this is going to end up going horribly wrong "

I have been having the debate with fellow town supporters for many years now that Ipswich were slowly but surely slipping towards relegation.

I'm not trying to say " I told you so " as it hurts, but it really was only a matter of time.

Some naive posters now seeing the light! Evans won't change and has absolutely no intention to support the manager financially ! The Bury lad choosing Plymouth over our club has put perspective on Evans ownership ! Absolutely disgraceful and demeaning , and still so many search to excuse this ‘Trojan Horse'!

I am attracted by the argument that we should sign two or three “quality” players rather than ten mediocre ones, but that argument has its problems. Take poor Mings, for example. He was certainly a quality player and, whilst with us, had an excellent fitness record. He was sold to Bournemouth for £8 million, which must have been a really big fee for them at the time. In his first match he picked up a horrible injury and has hardly played for them since.

Then you have the problem of how much the “quality” will cost. It is not just the transfer fee; there are wages and all sorts of other expenses. How are we to attract the “quality” to a League One club other than paying through the nose?

I would prefer us to spend heavily on the youth system; it was youth (plus a few shrewd signings) that produced success for Bobby Robson, albeit I accept that that was a very different era.

I'm not generally in favour of loans but I think we need a central defender on a season-long loan and a striker at least until Jan to cover until Sears is match fit again. There must be some suitable players in the championship that could fit the bill.

If you bear in mind 3 if our best players not on duty. Norwood, Judge & Nolan. Happy with the first outing.
If we remember the cost of relegation I'm happy to go along with what we have (Chambers excepted).
As per Bobby Robson give youth a chance

the likes of Nydam and Roberts have to show up. They have both been on loan at decent clubs with very average reports

What worries me is the lack of threat. This system may not get us enough goals regardless who is isolated up front. Midfield could not create with this system last year and there have been no changes.

Just how many of you went to the game yesterday.I did,and I've just got home with my son.I can tell you all now we played very well against a very good solid side.Ok,we made a few mistakes in defence but that was to be expected.
Remember this was only a friendly to get match fit and work out formations and give the young lads a run out. There were quite a few positives and when the three players who did not play return we will be a much better potent side.
Please don't start knocking them just because they lost.Huws was excellent as was Dozzell and Bishop. There will be a lot of formations tried before the season starts so let's not read too much into is yet.
I was pleased with the performance and things look very positive.
With regard to AJ.I personally have read nothing in the press to say he is leaving so I don't get all this talk that he is leaving. He seemed very happy sitting on the bench with the other lads.

I was calling for youngsters to be played as from last November.
Apart from 1 maybe 2 most didn't get a look in, let alone a run of games.
It now appears many of the younger players will be filling the squad.
Which I'm more than happy with. All it needs is some experienced players bought in with a certain quality.
Why these younger players wasn't given more game time the back end of last season I can't understand, assuming the club knew which road it was going down.
Not taking a different route regarding captaincy is also a mistake made.
ITFC as a club, team and business has chose to go with what has failed big time.
In the HOPE it may become successful after our worst period in 62 years.

When we was 100% relegated. Judge should of had his contract ripped up, made club captain, a longer contract on more money. Chambo, although a great fella should have then been released.
That I believe would have secured 14k season ticket holders.
And much more chance of success.

Dolphin, itfc, midas and all - if you check my posts you will see i have long been arguing for Evans to sell up. All of my posts for the last two or three seasons (up to August or so last year) ended with Oyston out because that is all Evansh is. He has pocketed every single transfer fee for a decade. He appointed hurst, who everone thought was the messiah, but after his interview with Bianca Westwood on the opening day of last season you could tell he was not. I was calling for Evans out long before you woke up and smelt the coffee.

As much as i dislike Evans he has to balance the books. If i have a thousand pound in my pocket, with the mortgage to pay and household bills etc to fork out for i cannot spend a grand in the Next sale. Simple. Evans has to adjust, so signings will not be made until Bart has gone. End of. If that means january, so be it. His wage is about the wage of 3 league 1 players. We need to look abroad to get decent players on a lower wage - like a Petta or Reuser. They are out there.

As for this website, when i see players who have had mental health issues over the last 12 months due to bereavements being attacked on a daily basis then i am sorry, but those , or some of those comments , should be viewed and removed by Phil. Some of the attacks on that player have been unbelievable. He was not the reason for our relegation. That fault lies solely with Evans and Hurst/Doig mismanagement. Anyone who tries to justify those attacks, or later calls out other users for insults (dolphin - not saying it's you), is just a hypocrite.

And as for opinions - i think we need two, possibly 3 players. Thats all. Play the youngsters. Our youngsters. Take our time - do not buy an injury plagued Keane but look at someone else ( i would take murphy, regardless of age). Just get the right players. I don't want too see a signing everyday if it does not add to the quality of the side. And only 1 loan signing.

Dolphin - you don't get on my nerves. Your view is your view, however much i may or may not agree.

We all need to be patient.

Oh and it looks like a decent sell on fee coming from Mings, who is on his way to villa for fee upto £25,000,000.

Books being balanced.

Just out of interest Dog, which player(s) at the club have had mental health issues please as appreciate it's something we should consider on here? I know people tend to think they are paid enough to be able to put up with abuse but it's surprising how many of them do struggle with mental health problems. Football can have some real highs and lows. It's not all a bed of roses by any means. Players out of favour with the manager or suffering with long spells on the sidelines can often really struggle mentally. I read all of the Secret Football books (enjoyed those) and he's suffered with his fair share of mental health problems. He's never officially confirmed it but the speculation seems to suggests that the actual identity of the Secret Footballer is Dave Kitson. His books are well worth a read for those of you who are into reading any football related books. It gives a real good idea / insight of what goes on behind the scenes in modern professional football.

Luke Chambers. Phil rang an article where he admitted he was struggling mentally following a family illness or death. Think it was between feb to march this year. Check old news articles.

With all respect Dog. If that was the case the club captain should have stepped down.
Until such time he was fit for work.
We all have situations in our life over one thing or another, footballers are no different.
He isn't a hero because he decided to carry on at work. It was his own professional choice.

So much hostility over a friendly....yes...sounds like we should have lost by more but this is a team which is in theory two leagues above us....

I am worried because I love my club. Not because of todays result that is meaningless but with 2 new faces only so far. This team did not know how to win last year and losing becomes a habit. We have also lost to lots of teams from lower leagues in recent years Exeter, Stevanage , Crawley, Lincoln etc.
Is Evans expecting these same players to suddenly score goals and storm the league or is her resigned to see what happens and hope? Norwood was a great signing lets hope he doesn't get hurt We have no goals coming from fullback. Lets be positive and say that Huws, Judge chip in with 10 goals each :)
I am always excited or a new season and will be cheering on the Blues from Canada.

"kept giving the ball away, dilly dallying" ok this is there first game but in the league they are playing in this season they will come up short if these traits are not ironed out. But as has already been said its early days yey
