Town Targeting Bury Winger Mayor
Thursday, 27th Jun 2019 10:01

TWTD understands Town are targeting out-of-contract Bury winger Danny Mayor

The 28-year-old is understood to be assessing his options with his Shakers contract up on Sunday and no new offer on the table due to the Lancashire club’s current financial situation.

Yesterday he spent time looking around at League Two Plymouth Argyle, who are managed by his former Shakers boss Ryan Lowe and a number of other clubs are also interested in addition to the Blues and Pilgrims, with his former loan club Tranmere having been linked. He is reportedly due to look at another club today.

Mayor says he is deeply saddened that his time at Bury is coming to an end in the manner that it is.

“When a bid comes in and you leave to further your career, that’s one thing, but I’ve had to leave because the club’s given me no option,” he told the Bury Times.

“They haven’t offered me a deal, they don’t look like they’re going to, and they don’t look like they want to pay any of the players. It’s a mess. I’ve loved it there so it’s a sad way to end. I’m devastated.”

He added: “I’ve left it as long as I could, hoping to speak to the club and get it sorted, but I’ve heard nothing.

“Everyone knows I’ve just had a kid, it’s close to home and I love the club so it would’ve been perfect for me.

“But it’s got to the point where I have to start looking after myself because I haven’t been paid for three months.

"It’s a job and I’ve got to start earning wages to pay for my family. Teams are going back for pre-season now so I’ve got to look for a club and look forward to next season.”

Primarily a left-sided winger, a position Town have been looking to strengthen all summer, Mayor can also operate on the other flank and in the centre.

Mayor joined local club Preston aged nine and progressed into their first team having spent time on loan at Tranmere as a youngster.

In 2012 Mayor moved on to Sheffield Wednesday but failed to make an impact with the Owls, starting only one game and appearing a further eight times from the bench.

The Leyland-born wideman joined Southend, on loan in February 2013, then joined Bury on a similar basis for the following season.

That switch was made a permanent deal in the summer of 2014 and Mayor has been a key man at Gigg Lane in the last few seasons, helping the Shakers to second place in League Two and promotion last season during which he netted 12 goals.

Mayor was the EFL’s League Two Player of the Year in 2014/15 when he was also named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Last season he was nominated for the EFL League Two Player of the Year but lost out to new Blues signing James Norwood, however, he was named in the League Two Team of the Year and his strike against Grimsby was nominated for the EFL's Goal of the Season award having been named Goal of the Month for September.

In his six years with Bury, including his loan season, Mayor made 212 starts and 22 sub appearances, scoring 36 goals.

Elsewhere, Conor Washington, 27, who was linked with the Blues following his release by Sheffield United earlier in the summer, is reportedly close to joining Hearts.

Ex-Blues right-back Elliott Hewitt, 25, has joined League Two Grimsby Town on a two-year deal having left Notts County following their relegation to the National League.

Sounds like the kind of player we need, fingers crossed he and his family like Suffolk!

My Bury supporting mate absolutely loves him. And we desperately need a left winger so Judge can play through the middle. No big risk on a free either so let's get this done as soon as we can.

Think linking up with Norwood could be a deal clincher for us. We need to strengthen the left and this looks a good fit. Centre back next please

really depends if he wants to leave the NW, obviously no comparison between our set up and the other clubs mentioned, but perhaps he likes his mums Sunday dinners.

Sounds like he's done really well in League 2, so should be able to make an impact in League 1.

Let us hope if he comes he is a good'un. But it really hits how Division 1 we now are that we get excited about frees from Gillingham, Tranmere and Bury. Should I be even worried that now rival clubs like Peterborough and Rotherham have both made record signings? Even last year we spent a few bob on players like Toto and Nolan. They are still with us - hope they can do the job this year.

Like the look of him from those highlight reels. We haven't had a winger (other than loanees) who look to beat a man and make things happen for a long time. If he was in the team of the year last season and available for free then he seems worth a shot.

The fact that he specifically mentions Bury being close to home (Preston) would seem to suggest he won't want to up sticks and move to the opposite side of the country. Though we may be able to offer him a better deal than the League 2 clubs he's been linked with, which may swing him.

We obviously need a proper left sided player to free Judge up to play behind the front man/men.

We may struggle to persuade him leaving the NW, if he watched our shower of wet wipes, camera shoddy types on telly recently

A lot of comments sound like we have rewound 12 months.
Signing players from a lower league than ourselves, in the hope they can step up.
With the odd exception, if your 28 and playing L2 football, you havnt had the career you hoped for.
We are desperate to sign quality players with the right experience.

Looks like the Gwion Edwards highlights from last year–another right-footed left-winger (who we then promptly played on the right).

And Elliot Hewitt is only 25?!? It feels like decades since he was with us.

The more thought made of Harrison has confused the hell out of me.
He goes to Pompey, who want nothing else but promotion this season. Presumably as a back up striker to there already dangerous front line.
We've lost money with him here for 12 months....
And hes a proven goal scorer.....
He played in a below average L1 side and scored goals.
Hes now older and wiser and will score a hatful for an attacking Pompey side.

In the L2 team of the year, a winger, for free... surely a no-brainer? There's not going to be much better around on a free. If he's happy to go down to Plymouth to look around, surely Suffolk is a better option, and the chance to play L1 football and hopefully challenge at the top.

Jackson was in the L2 team of the year wasnt he?

Judging by his comments I'm not sure he'd want to uproot his young family and come to “ far flung” Ipswich .... think he's after s club nearer home tbh . We'll see .

I don't think he was ITFCsince73 which seems strange bearing in mind what a season Accrington had that year.

If he's willing to consider Plymouth then I can't see why he wouldn't consider us (geographically speaking). Unless he's just gone to look at Plymouth out of respect for his previous manager but has no intention of joining them.

I can see him opting for Tranmere if “ being closer to home” is his priority . Both us and Tranmere are in League One, so same level of football for him.

Any player from league one league two can sound good on paper (remember last summer) the difference is now and I know I'm stating the obvious here we're now in the league the majority of them came from...I should think unlike Norwood not many know that much about him.

This time last season we were signing players from league 1

Now we're in it.

Now we're signing and looking at players from league 2..........?

I understand that we have little other option, but these aren't even young, developing players.

I really can't envisage an immediate return to the championship.

Just my honest opinion.

NSV. TBH. I've no problem with the 2 new signings so far.
The Harrison sale I've made no sense of.
We've lost a handful of loans from last season..
The idea that 1 or maybe no more new arrivals maybe coming. Is a shock at this moment in time.
As it stands we are a lot weaker than we was last season, which takes some doing.
We need a minimum 4 good quality signings before theirs any improvement from last season. And that on it's own wont get promotion. IMO.

I know NSV, this has a very predictable feel about it. You watch, all the 'Evans inners' if we don't go up (which I can't see with the current squad) they won't see this and a lack of proper investment as the cause... you can't criticise the god Evans, he keeping us in existence you know!! 🙄🤫
