Town Set for Windfall as Clarke's Brighton Move Confirmed
Friday, 21st Jun 2019 17:46

Town are set to receive a not insignificant windfall with Portsmouth having confirmed that former defender Matt Clarke has joined Premier League Brighton on a four-year deal.

The fee is officially undisclosed but earlier in the week was reported to be £3.9 million with further top-ups believed to eventually take it up to £5 million.

Town are due 20 per cent of the profit Pompey make on Clarke, who is believed to have been valued at £50,000 when he joined them as a makeweight in the £750,000 deal which saw Adam Webster sign for the Blues in the summer of 2016.

That will see Town receive a much-needed boost of £770,000 - in addition to the £450,000 fee received from Portsmouth for Ellis Harrison earlier this afternoon - at a time when the club is facing a £9 million loss of revenue due to relegation to League One.

Barham-born Clarke came through the academy and made one start and four sub appearances for the Blues before signing for Portsmouth, with whom he spent 2015/16 on loan.

Town could also receive further financial boosts via sell-ons this summer with Webster, currently with Bristol City, understood to be interesting Aston Villa, Leicester, Southampton and a number of others and with a valuation of £12 million having been reported.

Webster, 24, joined the Robins from Town for an initial £3.5 million last summer with the fee potentially rising to £8 million.

The Blues are likely to have a sell-on of 10 per cent included in that deal which, depending on how many top-ups have been paid already, could bring in up to £850,000, although Portsmouth would be due 20 per cent of anything the Blues receive as a result of their sell-on from the 2016 move.

Meanwhile former left-back Tyrone Mings is expected to move on from AFC Bournemouth with his former loan club Aston Villa the favourites to sign him with a fee of £15 million - potentially yielding Town up to another £700,000 via a 10-per-cent-of-profit sell-on - having been widely reported.

Ex-striker Kieffer Moore, now with Barnsley, is also believed to be interesting Bristol City with a 10-per-cent-of-profit sell-on also understood to have been part of the deal which saw the 26-year-old move to Oakwell for £750,000 in January 2018.

Fair bit of money coming in through all this then I suppose. Doubt much of it will go in the transfer fund though, which is understandable. As Tesco say though, every little helps...

Won't see it spent on players though. Any other fans would be up in arms but not sleep little Ipswich. Too dozy for your own good sometimes

i'd rather have the 3.895m, that'd be a lot more help.

oh well, at least it'll be a good reminder not to sell our players cheaply to portsmouth again... d'oh!

Music to Marcus Evans ears! Bart on the move, numerous windfalls, £1.2M raked in today. Don't forget a significant wage reduction already this summer. Yes, revenues will be less - a lot less - and yes cuts had to be made - but how far will Evans take it before reinvesting much needed funds in a still relatively poor squad?

No its not understandable!! We need to get out of league 1at the first time of asking or risk stagnating there for another generation, end of! Would that be understandable too?!! Ffs it's unbelievable where's the passion?!?!?!

The passion is not seeing our club do a Bolton et al.

So ultra conservative and cautious, never seen anything like it from football fans to be honest. It would be possible to compete without being in danger of 'doing a Bolton.' Why do you set the bar so low for ITFC?

So that makes about 1.2m coming in the club? Plus whatever we get for Bart, so thats got to be a total of approx 2.5m. So how are we going to be spending that then? Hmmmm.

All well and good but reinvest the money. Do not want a repeat of last year. Bosmans cannot be the only solution

We have lost £9m in revenue potentially. But crowds will be good if we are too end of the table, wage costs will be lower and we have lost some high paid players. Add to this maybe £2.5m from Bart, Harrison and Clarke. Evans runs the club to a budget.... we will be fine financially as he's happy to swallow the debt. Let's hope the kids step up

Bluearmy81. Do you ever put your brain into fear before commenting on here. We've received around £1.2m today, plus have around £1.5m for bart to come plus maybe around another £600,000 shouldcwebster move on, so a bit over £3m coming in. But we are gonna lose £9m this season. So a loss already of around £6m, and a much tighter ffp to adhere to than in the championship, yet you expect Evan's to spend loads on players. I can only guess you want the club to go bankrupt. Just the same old tripe from you on every story on here.

Crankyokdtractor. What does it matter if every player we sign is a Bosman, as long as they're good enough. And Bosmans can cost as much as a player signed for a fee anyway. Being a Bosman doesnt mean some1 is a bad player. Players move on when out of contract for various reasons, not always because the club dont want him or because hes no good. As long as those players brought in perform and do a good job for the team, I dont care if they a bosman or we paid a fee for them.

Blues1 - although the point you make is a valid one, you would assume the club budgeted for relegation months ago. Although sales of Harrison and Bart would be expected, the windfall sales would not have been taken into account. With 15 players wages already off the books as well, plus the reduction in wages for those who stay (rightly), it's not as bleak a picture as you state.

No one expects us to spend millions, but for me the fans have shown a huge amount of support for the club. Windfall money I.e. that not expected, should be reinvested into the playing squad in my opinion. Evans needs to show faith in the fans who have remained loyal to him and the club.

Phil ham. Can you explain why Pompey would get any of our sell on clause should Webster move on. Surely they'd have got their sell on fee when Webster left here?

Brain into fear?! 🤣Thing is blues that Evans was one of the richest owners in the championship let alone league 1. Unfortunately for us he's also one of the tightest which is why we are where we are. It's great that fans like you are so understanding and sympathetic of his tightness but as a fan of ITFC (call me selfish and stupid) but I want to see us play in the top flight again before I die. I know nuts isn't it!! 🤣 I might decide to take a leaf out of your book and start supporting Evans bank balance instead, probably less stressful and more successful, is there a web site you could send me a link to where you follow it?!! Fans like you are truly, truly a special breed.

Go bankrupt!!? While he is worth hundreds of millions?!! Man up and stop being such a scardy cat ffs 🤣😂🤣 There's more chance of us going down to league 2 than going bankrupt, start being scared of that instead maybe?!

Ask yourselves this simple question.

Which back four would you prefer?
a) Emmanuel, Webster, Clarke, Mings or
b) whatever we have at present.
