Harrison at Pompey and Closing in on Move
Thursday, 20th Jun 2019 15:04

Blues striker Ellis Harrison has been spotted at Portsmouth’s training ground as the Welshman moves closer to a switch to Town’s League One rivals.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Blues from Bristol Rovers last summer, was targeted by Pompey manager Kenny Jackett when he was still with the Pirates, again on loan in January and once more early in the close season, although it was understood their interest had cooled more recently.

However, the Newport-born frontman was photographed at the Hampshire club’s training ground today. We understand the deal is well progressed but not yet complete.

Harrison, who cost Town £750,000, started the season in Paul Hurst’s XI but appeared very infrequently after Paul Lambert took charge with injuries sidelining him for spells.

In total the former Wales U21 international made nine starts and eight substitute appearances during 2018/19, scoring just once, in the home draw with Sheffield United in December.

Portsmouth's new move for Harrison is likely to be a result of the income they will receive once former Town defender Matt Clarke joins Brighton, a fee of £3.9 million having been reported.

Town will receive 20 per cent of the profit Pompey make on Clarke, who it is understood was valued at £50,000 when part of the deal which saw him move to Fratton Park and Adam Webster join the Blues.

I very much doubt this is happening unless deals have been agreed in principle with replacements. My guess is that we will sign two from Keane, Washington and Eaves. Fees will in part offset a huge shortfall in income, the wages freed up will be reinvested but spread over another 3 or 4 signings. This would be realistic to expect given the situation.

no issues with bart going to millwall, he deserves a move, but you shouldn't sell to your direct rivals, remember marcus stewart?

we're 2nd favourites at the moment, pompey are 3rd; unless it's a massive fee, we shouldn't strengthen them.

Strange one this....

Out of Jackson, Morris, Folami and Harrison I'd for certain keep Harrison. He knows League 1 and has already proved that he can score goals here.

I wouldn't have been shocked if either of the other 3 had moved on...but Harrison?

Evans never learns he is still chasing the money.I hope any money we get goes on a defence.

Personally I think this would be a real shame as I think we only ever saw snippets of what EH was capable of. He looks like a decent prospect but presumably this means others feature higher in PLs plans? Shame as I think Harrison, Norwood, Sears, Jackson supplied by lankester, dozzel, Bishop, Nolan, huws?! Edwards etc could do some real damage at this level with a lot of games to play this season

What's the big deal? We need to be looking at the bigger picture which hopefully is championship football in 20/21. He proved unsuccessful in that league. PL will not let players go if they were to feature in his plans. Replacements will be lined up for any departing players.

I follow the line of thinking displayed by Saxonblue74. We must look at the bigger picture of championship football in 20/21, and he proved unsuccessful in that league. Other players mentioned here (Jackson, Folami, Drinan and co) have also proved unsuccessful in the Championship and should be moved on as soon as we are able. Ball and Washington have both been strongly linked, either of which could form a partnership with Norwood. So what if Harrison has scored loads of goals in league 1? He didn't in the Championship.

Couldn't fault his effort but he never looked like scoring even when he was fed the ball. Relegation means we can't keep passengers and must get another goal scorer in. Would be happy with Keane on a short contract as he holds the ball up and gets in good positions. Worth taking a risk.

More disappointed the club has effectively wasted £750K. Can't see us getting much for Harrison from Pompey, so that offsets the windfall from Clarke. Books balanced and ME happy.

Damn !!!, did not want him to go, I think he would have been good for us this coming season in League 1 very industrious and hardworking and I think we would have seen a better goals return through him dropping down a division, methinks Keane will be signing soon.

to all those saying, we need to concentrate on building a team for the championship:-

don't take your eye off the ball, getting out of league one is no cakewalk, and we need players like harrison who are proven at this level. the fact that pompey (one of the favourites at this level, who probably have more right than us to "plan for the championship") want him says it all.

by all means sell him in january if he's not doing it or IF we get promoted and we still have doubts about his ability to cut it at championship level, but to sell him now, when we're in league one is crazy!

I don't see us linked with a decent replacement for Harrison yet, why let him go if no one to replace him yet . They had better not sell Gwion Edwards also, he was a good signing , if he was to go, I wouldn't give us much hope of a top half table finish

Please don't tell me we are getting shot of this guy so we can bring in Keane, who is likely to get injured.

Positivity, not taking my eye off the ball. A championship squad should surely be successful in lge1? Just because we're in lge1 we don't have to be a lge1 squad! Would hate to see us get promoted then need yet another shake up!

hi saxon, i know what you're saying, but we won't be able to build a championship squad on league one budget.
we need to keep the players who are proven to be a success in league one and, who knows, they may show the step up needed to be a success in the championship.
whatever you do, don't give them away to help your closest promotion rivals!

Positivity, I think we have the bones of a competitive championship squad already. If we can get Lankester, Huws, Freddie fit again, Norwood is in and in my opinion Keane would be a great addition.

keane would be great if he's happy to take a massive pay cut and he stays fit (seems unlikely)

sears will be great when he's back (he'll miss at least half the season)

lankester will be great, but unlike harrison he's not a proven league one goalscorer

norwood should be great, but (as jackson, harrison and nolan showed) it sometimes takes a while to get up to speed at a higher level

we need hit the ground running and we need goals early, i don't think we can afford to narrow down our options (and we certainly can't afford to strengthen our rivals at the same time!0
