Town Confirm Norwood Signing
Monday, 10th Jun 2019 19:43

Town have confirmed the signing of Tranmere striker James Norwood on a three-year deal with the club having an option of a further season.

As reported earlier, the 28-year-old travelled to Portman Road this afternoon to undergo a medical and complete the formalities on a deal which had long been agreed.

Norwood, who joins Town on a free transfer, was the country’s top scorer last season with 32 goals for Tranmere as they won promotion to League One and was named in his divisional Team of the Year.

He becomes Paul Lambert’s third summer signing after the capture of goalkeepers Tomas Holy and Adam Przybek.

As previously reported, the deal has been all but done for several weeks that Norwood was Portman Road-bound but he spent time in Magaluf with his Tranmere team-mates and then with his family before travelling south today to complete the formalities.

Norwood, whose goals helped Tranmere win promotion via the play-offs in 2018/19, bagged 23 goals as they won promotion to League Two by the same route in the previous campaign and returned to the EFL after a three-year stint in the Vanarama National League.

Eastbourne-born Norwood, who is 5ft 9in tall, was a youth player with Brighton, Crystal Palace and hometown club Eastbourne Town before breaking into EFL football with Exeter, with whom he made three starts and one sub appearance.

During two years with the Grecians, he also spent time on loan in non-league at Sutton United, Forest Green Rovers and Eastbourne Borough, before joining the Green Devils on a permanent basis in 2011.

Following his release by Forest Green, the seven-times-capped, four-goal England C international joined Tranmere in the summer of 2015, going on to net 93 times in 180 games for the Wirral-based club.

Great goal scoring records in ‘lower leagues'! Plenty to prove this coming season especially already being 28 years of age! Good luck James, he's hoping fellow team mates share your desire and ambitions!

First bit of good news in a long while , didn't have a sniff of a goal all last season, got a feeling this is our best signing since Waghorn , we're gonna score one more than you ...

Good news. Now follow it up with a decent CB, RB and GK (better than what we have not freebies on the cheap for the sake of it.) That should give us a decent chance of top 2, which is imperative.

Great news - and presumably no transfer fee. The more good signings the greater the encouragement for others to sign.

You know James, scoring a goal is very much like making love to a beautiful woman, you undo the defence, then you get yourself into position and then you bang it home. I'm sure you'll do that for us next season!!

HOOOOOORRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!...if he plays for us largely like he did in the play-offs then we have a good league one striker! - welcome James, just hope you start drilling that ball in the net, it's about time we had a prolific striker.

Can't believe on other threads people are still moaning, what's to moan about signing one of country's leading scorers, regardless of what league it's still a great achievement.
I think this could be a brilliant signing for us and he'll give us something that we haven't got up top,if the play offs are anything to go by he doesn't stop running and doesn't give defenders a minute.
REALLY glad we got this done as I didn't expect him to come here, looking forward to see him score plenty next year.

This feels like the best news since Marcus Stewart. An actual GOAL SCORER. Brilliant.

JUst shows that ITFC still has some pulling power. There must be a number of Championship clubs who would have loved to have signed him. Great signing PL. He looks like a really troublesome individual to opposing defences. COYB

At last we have signed a proven goal scorer and not someone who has scored 5 goals in 90 games :)

I understand that Matt Gill may have had a hand in taking him on at Exeter after seeing him in a schools game playing for St. Bedes (fancy £30k a year public school). Gill was also involved with Tranmere when he was signed there. Hopefully they have a good relationship and we will see him develop further.
